  1. *** RESOLVED! ***

A few guys over on facebook suggested using a hair dryer. And it seemingly did the trick! That, WD40 and a shit load of hard taps to the focus barrel ?

    Here's the process I used:

    1. Apply WD40 into the grooves of the focus barrel. Wipe off the excess liquid and leave for 24hrs.
    2. Use hair dryer on low setting, high heat over focus barrel and inside grooves.
    3. Tap hard around focus barrel with palm. Try to twist barrel and tap some more.
    4. repeat step 2 (if needed).
    5. repeat step 3 (if needed).

Hopefully this might be of help to others too.

Next StepClean, re-grease, re-build and at some point -- TEST.

Your lens barrel has been cut out the distance marking part, obviously

It's not been cut.  I removed the distance marker ring to access the screws ?

I think it worth around $200 nowadays

    I'll keep that in mind!

Did you remove the front look ring first? 3 little screws beside is writted "kowa prominar made in japan"

It'll allow you to rotate the focus barrel in the desired direction.

All removed. The focus barrel was ceased. I say "was" as it's now been resolved! Just about to post an update ?

I think you can remove all the 3 screw/tabs that limit infinity and close focus points.

Thank you. Seen that vid before. The issue I have is that I'm unable to access the screws due to the focus barrel being stuck. Need to figure out a way of loosing it without breaking the damn thing! ?

Hey, your lens has been modified

Hey @ken. Thanks for the pic! Modified? Please explain.

BTW, if you need, I can sell mine to you, mechanic parts only, no glasses.

How much are you wanting for that bad boy? ?

  4. Hi All,

Anyone have any experience with stripping down a Kowa 8z Anamorphic adapter? I've stripped down a couple of other scopes before but this one's giving me a bit of bother. The pics below are as far as I've got.

Repair Issue: I want to access the screws (highlighted in red) but the focus barrel (helicoid?) is jammed - Won't rotate in either direction. Anyone experienced this before? If so, how did you release/fix it? I'm sure I'm missing something.

@Tito Ferradans Maybe you might have some advice?

    Thanks in advance!

That's great and very useful information. Unfortunately it's no good to the original poster who is a spammer (or a spambot).

Spammer/spambot? Well F**k me. I had no idea!

But all good advice to anyone reading it. And I for one found it interesting that you 'only' film in ProRes LT. The results are incredible for such a relatively lowly codec.  Does this also go for film's you made with the BMCC like Shadow Warriors?

Thanks, Kieran. I personally wouldn't consider Prores LT a relatively low codec. The target data rate weighs in at around 100mbps. That's GH4/5 [4K] data rates! And double that of a Sony A7s which, from my understanding, comes in at 50mbps. It's plenty and then some ?

Shadow Warriors was shot specifically for The Fighting Spirit Film Festival and hence was shot in RAW. Anything else you've see from me that says 'BMPCC ' is all Prores LT ?

Two brothers (elliander pictures) shot their first feature film titled 'Cosmos' in Prores LT. They did numerous tests and found that this codec gave them the best balance of image quality vs file size. To me, their work is exceptional.

    Hi,

I have been looking around on amazon.com for Blackmagic Camera deals and I couldn't help but notice their many negative reviews. Mainly they were the horrible battery life, hard to see the screen in the sun, goes through SD cards like a kid eats a cookie etc.So I was wondering what your top problems with the cameras are and how you work around them? At this point from what I heard, it would probably make sense to get a camera that is more geared towards the film maker and a camera that you don't need a custom software for post production.

    Any help will be apprecited.

I didn't find the right solution from the Internet.

Two main issue's I have with the Pocket is the native crop size (closer to 3.02x than 2.88x) and battery life. Also, the only reason this camera would eat up memory cards is if you're shooting high bitrates --> Prores 422/Prores 422 HQ or the main killer of card space --> RAW.

    My personal solutions:

    • Use a speedbooster/focal reducer to reduce crop.
    • Use a separate battery cradle that takes, in my case, Sony FP batteries.
    • Shoot Prores LT (ALL my videos are shot in LT)

In the case of online uploads, I see absolutely no reason to shoot in higher bitrates. The compression will kill any "extra detail" you think is justified with the much larger file sizes.

As for the screen, you can pick up a decent 7" 4K field monitor (such as the FW760) for around £120.00gbp.

If you're serious about getting a pocket, I'd say put aside another £200.00gbp for what I'd consider necessary accessories. The "pocket" part of the camera name actually means to put your HAND in your pocket! £££££ ?

    Hope that helps.

Nice grade. Was this handheld? How were you getting those smooth movements?

Thanks. Not handled. I used the 'Tripod Dolly Technique'. Basically, you mount the camera on the tripod, shorten the back leg and push forward onto your subject. It's a frugal favourite :) Plenty of vids on YouTube that can do a much better job of explaining than I can!

She popped right up like a trooper and didn’t miss a beat though... good on her!

So, I assume I have to load the picture profile before I change the firmware to ML, right? I used ML on the EOS-M years ago to test Raw, but wasn’t a fan of it on that camera. The bitrate hike may be perfect though. I think the EOS-M already had a slightly higher bitrate than the other Canon cameras of its time, anyway.

Yeah, I’m really just looking for a little more wiggle room. The grades on your website show you can do a lot with it... more than enough. Cinestyle is a bit much, but I always liked Marvels. Definitely looking forward to testing them yours and Marvels... if my stupid job would slow down for a few minutes.

Was that the C-Mount Tevidon 25mm or the M42 25mm? Either way, wicked look.

That's my Niece for you. She laughed and got on with it!

You can install the picture profile with or without ML installed (ML was installed on mine).

Those grades were pretty testing too -- I personally didn't see any noticeable reduction to image quality. Test away, man :)

Haha, when she fell I almost pissed myself. Good stuff, Boz. I love how you are using these cameras from yesteryear in your films... very inspiring!!!

I am going to mess around with my eos-m next week. Did you use ML with this short? I want to experiment with the 3x Bitrate and Crop mode. Your profile looks great. So expect a donation. Have you compared your profile to others like Cinestyle or Marvels? I always used Prolost Flat in the past and found it pretty good, so since your profile is based on that but takes it further is very intriguing.

Sorry for the late reply. Been out of town! Yeah, laughed my ass off too when she hit the ground :D. Thanks, bud. These little cams have got so much to offer that it's a shame they're discarded like some kind of antique relic from the past. I personally find them more enjoyable and more satisfying to use

Yep, I used Magic Lantern. My personal setting is 1.3x bitrate. I've found this is to be the best balance between image quality/file sizes for my needs. I don't see the point in creating big file sizes for minimal difference in quality (especially if uploading to YT, Vimeo etc).

My profile isn't intended to be compared with Cinestyle or Marvel. For me it was more of a case of trying to create something like a -6 contrast option with a smoother transition between shadows and highlights. Pushing the 8bit codec in these Canons just produces muddy/noises images that I personally think is not very pleasing to look at.

You'll def see the difference between Prolost and my profile. It's def worth checking out if you're looking for a little more wiggle room in your image.

Looks good, and on an eos-m.  'scuse my asking, what lens used?

Thanks. I used a Carl Zeiss 25mm prime lens. Ask away, man. I have nothing to hide!

Thanks for posting it. It’s easy to sit around and look at specs and announcements but it’s posts like these that show what those specs can do. And a reminder to me to put my nose down and get to work.

But yes... this camera should be epic.

Awesome job as always Boz!!! I love that as the rest of us are raving about the new Pocket, you are shooting truly cinematic work with the original one. Nicely done.

Thanks, @mercer. Kind of you and very much appreciated! Must admit, I'm pretty blown away with the specs of the new pocket. Looks like a true game changer
