NX1 / NX500

@ricardo_sousa11 Is it ok for stills single-AF? I imagine I wouldn't use the 30mm much for video anyway.
Its useable, but still quite slow, specially comparing against the 16-50s.
The Samsung NX1 is like a totally different camera when you use it with the 16-50s, I really cant stress this enough, this lens is stunning in every single department, and a must have for this camera. IF you want a cheaper option, check out the samsung 45mm f1.8 its also quite decent, however not as good.

I've had one for a few months, but sold it, really not worth it, it has decent image quality but the very very slow AF and manual focus by wire is terrible, it was always a pain to use. The only real advantage is how small it is.

I was clearing space on all of my hard drives for the raw file storage, and peeping at my time with other cameras this past year plus and the D5500 was the only image I found remotely cinematic enough compared to the ML Raw... well the BM stuff looked decent too but I have different issues with them. So why not the D7500... the D500 has stunning 4K and the 7500 should be exactly the same.
I wouldnt recommend any Nikon for video, as amazing photography cameras as they are, they are far far behind in the video department, even comparing against the NX1. If you want a hybrid mostly for video, there are many many better options, if you want a hybrid mainly for photo, then mostly any camera will do.
As for the D500, its an expensive piece for what it delivers (in the video department), and was really designed for wildlife photography, any other segment and it falls short, specially with the unecessary 4k heavy crop (further showing that the camera is mainly for wild life).

- Why has Gamma DR fallen out of favor?
- How usable is the DIS? Can it end up warping the image too easily? Does the image quality drop much?
I cant remember why I stopped using it, but I remember commenting something about it around here on the NX1 thread.
I wouldnt recommend the DIS, it might be usefull for some occasions, but more often than not it would ruin the image.
Heres some NX1 footage if you're interested, almost everything in my channel is from the NX1.

Will not comment on the camera, because its clearly out of my field and directed mostly at photojornalism/sports. However, I do believe Sony made an amazing move with this product, because it will force 3rd party lens manufacturers jump to the E-mount, and get a much broader 3rd party lens selection (Im talking to you, Sigma!). They basically killed 2 birds with one stone on this one, creating even more support for their existing cameras, and releasing a fast focusing camera (which was what most people complained about).

Rolling shutter is very noticeable when you're using a non IS lens, like any camera, the little jitters will make everything look like jelly. Once you're using a stabilized lens (and may I say, its a very good lens stabilization), most of those issues dissapear.
I only shoot handheld, I dont even own a tripod, and never did, most of my struggle was to avoid rolling shutter on any of these new 4k cameras, but once you attach a stabilized lens (or in Sonys case, sensor) those problems become way less prominent. -

8 hours ago, Inazuma said:I'm kinda thinking about getting one or both of these cameras (largely because of the 16-50mm f2-2.8 lens, affordability and ergonomics). I'm just wondering a few things..
- Is the exposure drifting problem present in all or only some of the units?
- Can it be fixed?
- Is the autofocus performance the same between the NX1 and NX500?
- What would you say is the highest ISO you can film at?
- Is the NX1 4k readout speed improved with the hack?
- Does the NX500 have Gamma DR?
- Any other quirks I should know about?
- How are the preamps on the NX1?
- Any ideas why the 2.5k hack can't be ported to the NX1?
- Is the EVF comparable to cameras like the A7Sii and X-T2?
Let me try and answer as much as possible here, since I have both the a7sII and NX1.
1. I dont think that problem is still alive, neither was alive when I bought the camera.
3. Autofocus is pretty good, unless its lowlight, it hunts quite a bit.
4. Depends on the framerate, 4k - 1600 / 1080p 60 - 800 / 1080p120 - 400.
5. No, however, the rolling shutter can easily be avoided, specially with the 16-50S lens.
6. Yes, it has Gamma DR, however, if you search on other threads, there are custom profiles that work really well.
8. I would say they are average.
9. No idea
10. The EVF and Screen is the best screen in any camera, the a7sII is terrible when compared to the NX1 both in the EVF and Screen.
Overall thoughts, The NX1 is still my favorite camera, the image is very very pleasing, and after you learn how to work with its image, is a very veyr strong camera, specially if you get it at a good price.

I was crazy about getting this camera as it was revealed, but as time goes, and theres more and more videos with it, theres something really off on the image. I cant really tell what it is, but everything looks strange for me and just not appealing for some reason...I guess ill keep waiting and see how it gets from now on, but Im definetly not getting one any time soon.

I just got the VS2 Fine HD from Apature and its pretty good, havent tried it extensivelly yet, but it def helps focusing and so on on the a7sII. It supports 4k as well, and I payed 240€ +- for it.

Thank you all for your replies!
The script of the add, is having the beer opened in various different ways, so, its not gonna show anyone driking it.
I think e-poxy might be a really good idea, I will also be holding the sony a7sII by the strap, to remove some of the weight, while allowing it to move freely. I will keep this thread updated as I build and use the rig.

Hi everyone!
I've recently gotten myself into a fun project and thought I'd use a cool technique i've seen countless times, but I cant identify its specific name. In the video bellow theres an example, however, I dont want to attach my camera to a person, but to a beer bottle, so I dont know how I could do that without showing parts of the rig holding the bottle. Anyone got any idea how? Also, Ideally i'd use my Sony a7sII, but if it comes down to that, I could use a regular gopro.
Edit: So, the technique is snorricam it seems, now the struggle is, how do I mount it to a bottle...

Cvp as people have said.
I usually buy all my stuff on ebay though, Ifinity or Koha store (or whatever its written), they have really really good prices.

The Dianna + Brian wedding video is stunning (haven't seen the other one yet).
I have just finished a very generic wedding video and this makes mine look like somebody handed a slightly drunk aunty Doris a disposable point and shoot from the supermarket. This is a good thing, by the way. Aside form the drone shots, there is plenty in there which I am going to use (editing technique wise) that I hadn't considered; in particular the overlapping dance scenes towards the end.
Thanks very much for sharing.
Thank you so much!
Those overlapping dance scenes are my saving point...I always have a terrible time to edit the "party" section of a wedding, thats why I do it that way, it saves the whole thing!

@ricardo_sousa11 Great work man! Did you use any lights at the night party scenes? What drone for the aerials?
Thank you so much, I used one light a Lowell pro light I believe (its not mine, but a friends) I think they were great! As for the drone, I believe it was the P3 Pro (or advanced?! I dont know much about these, but it was def. a P3).

Unfortunately its something very pronounced on 1080p60 with intricate details, I dont think I added any this time, but I totally agree.

Your "The Blossom of us" is a very nice piece of work. Very artistic and a nearly perfect match to camera's characteristics. Congratulations!
Though, you can see the scene, when you shot against the sun, the NX1 failed completely (lack of DR). You gilded this critical situation somehow because of your experience with the camera, in composing and artistic skills... ;-)
Thank you!
Dynamic range is the NX1 weak point, specially the highlights, you really need to preserve as much highlights as possible or else the image will become very digital. However, having tried a lot of "prosumer" cameras (nothing fancy, just Canons, Nikons, Sonys, Panasonic etc) this is yet my favorite camera...even against my new sony a7sII...And im not just talking about the experience, but the image itself, samsung surprises me everytime I load my sd cards in my computer, and with the sony, only after quite a bit of tweaking the image starts to look good. Maybe because im still not used to this camera, but the NX1 was an amazing surprise, and it was worth every single penny I payed for it.

That 99$ one looks great, but im afraid the input lag would be a lot, for it to be that price?!
Any of those have lag problems?
-
Hey everyone,
Im looking for a cheap field monitor, I dont need much, maybe focus peaking would be a plus, but not essencial. Its supposed to be used with my sony a7sII, so it should be able to support a 4k input, even if its displayed at 1080p. Any in particular you guys recomend? Preferably with 0 input lag, or close to 0.

Thanks! Fall is great in the woods. Just wondering, do you plan on adding any more to the vellichor lut collection in the future?
This pack is concluded, but im already making a few more to be released in the future, but they will have a different overall look, less faded and more contrasty. I will also be making some creative ones that will shift colors and so on, but thats a work in progress.

Just grabbed the LUT pack. I really like how they are customized for your NX1 settings, @ricardo_sousa11 . Really liking the stylized looks. I put Lisbon and Denver on a couple random test shots I had from the fall season when I also happened to be trying out your NX1 settings. Thanks!
wow! I like this a lot, you got some really nice colors over there!

Not saying they cant produce really good content, they absolutely can, just like most cameras these days. However, even forgetting about 4k, you still have black magic cameras that deliver amazing 1080p, Canons with their great color science, Samsung with stunning quality and low price point. This is basically why I couldnt recommend any Nikon for video, but they still perform great.
