  1. Hi - I've got a 120x100cm heat resistant softbox for my redheads, but buggered if I can fine an egg crate of similar dimensions for it - any ideas, anybody?

  2. Hi @hijodeibn - DPAF and IS work great on the 17-55 2.8 but the noise is sufficient to register with the onboard microphones (both the scratch one and the handle ones - I haven't tried it yet with a camera-mounted shotgun) - in fact even the iris changes would be too loud, I think, for critical work. I don't have the 18-55 STM, just the 18-135 and the 55-250. DPAF may be slightly faster on these lenses (and is noticeably excellent on the longer zoom) and face recognition is also very good. They are near-silent in operation. In summation, if image quality/low-light was my priority and I was recording dual system or MOS I would opt for the 17-55 2.8 every time; otherwise it would be the STMs.

Stop believing the conspiracy theory that Afghan sheep herders conspiring in a cave outwitted a $2 trillion defense infrastructure.

If you're so familiar with the world outside YouTube you'd be aware that OBL was a highly educated Saudi civil engineer and that the majority of the actual hijackers were also Saudi graduates. You'd also be aware that the much-vaunted defence infrastructure was, quite rightly, not ranged against the possibility that airliners making internal flights would be converted to use as missiles. As they say - to be successful the security services have to get it right every time, the terrorists only have to get it right once.

  4. Had a look around Google and it could be a fungus or mould. Various people suggest trying something called a UVC sanitizer wand - something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Verilux-CleanWave-Portable-Sanitizing-Travel/dp/B00144I3ZU/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1490088025&sr=8-1&keywords=uv+sanitizer.

I guess it's perfectly possible that there's something in the air at that location that hasn't been there other times you've visited.

  5. I suspect the US authorities might save more american lives by instituting a sensible level of gun control domestically - since 3,180 Americans have died in gun crime incidents so far this year while, er, none have died as a result of foreign terrorism. But what do I know - the only thing we open carry in Hove is our bags of hot, steaming chips (fries) from the chippy!

  6. As far as I'm aware it's only the Canon STMs that support face recognition. I have the 17-55 2.8 (which I'm assuming is the one you mean above) and the AF works great (if a little noisy) and the IS is a treat - but no face AF. I also have both the 18-135 and 55-250 STMs and they work perfectly and near-silently. They're reasonable lenses optically, with all the usual provisos, if a little bland; but if you're looking for something to throw on the camera and forget about while it does the work for you they're hard to gainsay. Obviously not the fastest glass out there, but the C100's (well the mk ii anyway, I haven't used the mk i) low-light performance means that upping your ISO a couple of clicks is a relatively pain-free experience in all but the lowest-light situations.

Taking 1.7MM unique users (blog readers?) per year assuming half a point conversion (a little on the low end but pretty standard for websites) on a $20 digital guide and the only overhead being a 4% PayPal fee equals ~$163k/year.

I don't know what Andrew makes, but I was struck by a recent post by Noam Kroll on his site where he said that 'Thousands of you picked up my LUT packs', which were $36 each or $89 for the set. I hadn't really considered it before, but that adds up to a big old pile of wonga! Good for them, I say. If selling online intangibles that provide value to the community can provide independent or interesting voices with a living that excuses them from having to run ads, I'm all for it.

Not sure why this wasn't posted in the Advantages of Traveling Light thread...

Good point. Was late (for me - 3 kids needing bedtimes) and I was full of cider.

  9. Just picked up one of these - super cheap, gives you at least a couple of stops at 1-2 metres. I'll get my iPhone colour meter thingy on it during the week and report back, but through the camera set to a daylight WB I can't pick up any green issues visually: https://www.amazon.co.uk/VILTROX-L132T-Dimmable-Panasonic-Camcorders/dp/B01L8XQMVS/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1489958988&sr=8-3&keywords=viltrox&th=1

Also just ordered a couple of these: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Andoer-SC-406-Temperature-Filters-Camcorder/dp/B01K9W9G94/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1489957681&sr=8-1&keywords=sc-406&th=1 - after seeing this:

If I had 3-4000 bucks, I would probably get a C100ii. It's just a nice image and it seems that the camera just gets out of your way? I imagine it is kinda small without the top handle attached?

Without the handle it looks and handles like an extremely large SLR (an extremely large SLR on which all the video-centric controls are easily to hand with it up to your eye, and are nearly 100% assignable - for instance button 7 on the handgrip: when I'm using an AF lens I have it set to AF lock, when using a MF lens it's set to magnify/B/W and peaking). It is a joy to use.

  11. Thanks guys. I have to say that even at this early stage (ie, before I've learnt to fully exploit it) the image out of this camera is more pleasing to me than anything else I've shot with so far - in fact it was the camera I really wanted right from the get-go (well the Mk i actually, as this wasn't out when I first got the bug). I honestly don't know what I'd do with 4K - for me the HD image from a good sensor has exactly the right resolution to give the opportunity to craft an organic end result.

  12. This was my first opportunity to get out of the house and play with my C100 mkii since I got it - over a month ago. Just my luck that if I emerge from my house bearing a camera the sun always makes a run for it and the clouds start to shed their loads - so not a lot of time, or inspiration went into this. That said, I couldn't be happier with the camera - it's so easy to use that it just gets right out of the way so shooting feels more fluid than I've experienced before.

'Twas shot Canon log, with a tech LUT to Rec709 and an Eastman 100T emulation LUT, plus tweaks etc. Mainly the 55-250 STM lens.
