Just a note: The Nikon D5 recording limit was bumped up to 29 minutes 59 seconds in June: http://nikonrumors.com/2016/06/23/major-nikon-d5-firmware-update-version-1-10-now-available.aspx/

The Tokina is a completely different look than the Nikon which you might enjoy. If you find a good copy it has a much smoother focusing ring than the Nikon, even if it has a shorter throw. This was shot entirely with it on a D800.

Not many other options for that mount for Zooms. If it's in your budget the 24-105 is an option.

    interesting discussion
is watching 17 hours of one show nonstop a fad? absolutely not: its the new way, people love it, its a normal part of media consumption now
when i first heard of this phenomenon, i was actually surprised that people have the attention span to watch, say, an entire season of a show at one time. as a content creator who might want to make some abnormally long content in the future, and just in general, i find this encouraging. i think it will allow more options for people like me
be that as it may, theres something to be said for the empty time between installments of a serialized product
when im into a show, i spend that time with the characters, even though theyre not on tv. so when the sopranos comes back after a season break, im like Whats been going on in their lives the past X number of months. additionally, the sopranos wasnt meant to be watched back to back for 6 seasons – it wasnt designed that way. but thats not to say that one could take binge watchers into consideration during the early stages of conception for a product, in order to produce a show that can be watched in 44 min episodes or in 7 hour chunks at a time
waiting is also good. hell waiting is the best. whats better than anticipation? that time is significant
getting a show over that people HAVE to watch live is really hard these days.... live tv used to be a thing, now i think most would prefer watching at their convenience. for narrative its a tough sell. i watched the main event of UFC 202 live the other night because it wouldnt have been the same later (i was rooting for nate diaz btw #stocktonstrong #frownyface)
the times are changing thats for sure

    1) What camera are you using?
If you don't mind the focus direction get Nikon Ai-s lenses, they work on everything.
If you have mirrorless, a Canon FD set can be had for very cheap.
Everything else is outside your price range.

I'm not sure what you're saying here. Do you believe Super 35 is similar to what is commonly referred to as Full Frame- like a 5D? The sensor in a Super 35 camera like the Arri Alexa, at least as I understand it, is almost identical to APS-C in terms of field of view. I simply mentioned those focal lengths because I figured you and other folks would find it interesting, the focal lengths that other DPs tend to find most useful.

" ....he wants laws followed, what's best for people including LGBQ, etc?"

What the hell does that even mean? Follow the law would mean follow the law. Trump has stated publicly that he would appoint a justice that would overturn their right to marry, would overturn Roe vs. Wade if he could. How the hell does that benefit women and LGBT people?
"He is complaining American companies sent jobs abroad....why he didn't move jobs from his owns companies from china to EEUU as an example to other companies?
To be competitive that is the reality due to the current situation?  A lot of Americans out of work due to businesses having left the country in the past decade. "

So when it came to getting ahead while being in charge of an american company he used foreign workers to cut cost. But because he will be president he will put the country first and force U.S. companies to keep jobs here. SURE. How is he going to do that?

i would say it totally depends on what youre doing... what are you producing? a doc? a kubrick-like feature?
even though im a fine artist, im literally working on a 14 foot drawing right now, i came kicking and screaming to the crushing realization that to make my first feature the way i want, i have to storyboard every shot. that epiphany came some time ago, and im a lot more knowledgable now, so the very idea that i even though it was optional is laughable today, its ironic. but thats for me
the SIMPLEST storyboards can be amazingly useful, a quick sketch that anyone can do can show lens choice, character movement, camera movement, etc. hell, look at this guy these suck and his films have worked out ok

Really you want to talk censorship? Trump has directly threatened reporters and the media that if he's elected that they would come to regret it.

I'm voting Hillary/3rd party because of Trump's incompetent foreign policy and his stance on Gay marriage rights. I want a liberal justice added to the supreme court.
They are both horrible people that I don't want in, but I have to chose based on who I think will benefit the country most in office.

I have a story for you all:

I work in a small non-profit independent movie theater. We saw a trailer for documentary on the economy that was well reviewed and booked it. Not thinking anything was amiss, just booking the documentary because it was well reviewed.
What followed was a certain political party in town going absolutely ballistic. Calls came in that they would boycott our theater, one of our employees walked out (they came back, but would only work for us, but would never see a movie in the theater again...way to hold to you principles.), the leader of the party said in a public email to all their members that we were in cahoots with the other political party, that we had talked to party leaders and we should have our non-profit status revoked.

Emergency board meeting was called, to give them credit, everyone on the board took a stand "Fuck em', show the film!" It was attended by every single board member and they told all their friends to go, it was the highest grossing documentary we have ever shown. It did far better than it would have if no fuss had been made. We threatened to take the party representative to court for slander unless he retracted his statement. They agreed, but only if we showed a political film from their side! During which a political candidate spent 20 minutes talking about the bad things the other party had done before the film started.
Now when people come in asking for documentaries that have even the slightest political ties (most requests come from this party) we tell them we are never showing political documentaries ever again. People are no longer rational about these things, cannot take critism, and have created a us vs. them mentality.

It's going to get really ugly before it gets better.

    See above.

I honestly think it is getting worse than previous elections, the volume of insults being thrown around by everybody is insane.

"Hey did you hear about the ground war in Syria in which the U.S. is funding a democratic based uprising and the Russian government is offering ground support to the country leaders?"

9/10 people that I interact with on a daily basis don't know about this at all. Because actual political talking points no longer matter.

I've often strategized that I should make a doc or two and pander to a specific ideological market.  It's not a bad way to make a living.  You can exploit people that are eager to hear the choir sing.  But, I guess I just can't be so cynical to do that.  It would feel too gross.  I'm always trying to see things from all sides.  For instance, my best friend is sort of a hard core right-wing religious socially ultraconservative dude, but he's still an awesome guy with a lot of love in his heart.  So I don't care for caricatures that refuse to see people as whole.
FWIW, I consider myself to be in the middle of the ideological spectrum, leaning left. (by USA standards)  We're a wonderfully weird and messy nation.  Corrupt and noble simultaneously.  Prejudiced and fair.  Violent and compassionate.  Hey, we're human.  And we're not homogenized, so it's never going to be easy.  People are people after all.  Tribal.  There's comfort in in being tribal, so I get that desire even though I like to think I can avoid it.
As things like this D'souza documentary continue to polarize opinion, I don't see it as a healthy shift in American culture.  But, we've always been a bit nuts in that regard.  Lot's of pundits tend to be incredulous about the current level of discourse, but it doesn't seem any more vexed than previous elections; it's just that those wildly contentious elections took place before any of our lifetimes.  We've even had weirdos like Trump on major party tickets before too.  Those guys tend to be forgotten as time passes.
This year the GOP is in disarray. (has been for awhile)  It's pretty much like a retired guy that's upset kids are playing on his lawn; loud, cranky, attracts a lot of attention, but wildly outnumbered.
What's happening this year is just a fever.  It'll eventually break and then we'll be inoculated for awhile until the next virus hits.
In the meantime, the only cure is more cowbell.
An economics movie that was so ideologically loaded it caused that sort of uproar?  Can't think of anything mainstream that came down the pipe recently which would cause such a reaction, unless you're in a really ideologically biased community.  Was it more of a fringe movie like "Hillary's America"?  And was it more of a righty film or a lefty film?
