  1. Talking about Canon I just published an article in Fstoppers two days ago. Even Mr. Reid was quoted ! Unbelievable. https://fstoppers.com/critiques/disappointment-after-disappointment-what-wrong-canon-188893
  2. On the other side Sony keeps a competitor on the leash and still gets a share of cake every time the competitor sells something. It also dries up the market for any company who would like to sell sensor. Better to fight a known enemy under your terms with some benefits than ending with an uncontrollable situation with new independent competitors or chinese/korean players. In this case Sony controls the ground, the date and the players for the Battle. They fight and are mildly annoying but they give you cash and can not win the war. Better than having the enemies do alliance in your back and stab you in unknown terrain.
  3. 576, correct. In any case, internet has the answer and calculator for you ! https://calculateaspectratio.com/ and https://calculateaspectratio.com/
  4. >>> 5Dmk3 Raw: The good: Better colors and MUCH better grading latitude, better high ISO performance, better cinematic look (shallow DOF, film grain, etc.) The con: magic lantern raw can be buggy (camera freezing), the raw workflow takes time, raw shooting eats up memory card very fast (few minutes on a 64GB), the 5Dmk3 image is not sharp (some will like it for its "cinematic" look). >>> GH5: The good: great IBIS, 4k60, slomo (VFR up to 180fps), lot of video features, small camera, fits on a small gimbal, extra sharp image (can be dialed down), reasonable bitrate (150 Mbps, 400 Mbps with the new firmware). The con: colors not as good as the 5Dmk3, lower grading latitude even when shooting in 10 bits, smaller sensor thus lower high ISO quality and not as cinematic as full frame camera.
  5. "It's also a showpiece for new time-lapse cinematography innovations by Lowe, including gimbal technology that allowed him to shoot astrophotography scenes from a moving helicopter. To help create the imagery for the film, Lowe's company Dreamcore worked together with Dubai Film to produce new types of camera equipment, and he also collaborated with Shotover to help build the F1 camera gimbal." https://www.engadget.com/2017/07/11/awaken-documentary-trailer/ By the way, Dubai Film was also in the Prod for the Dubai Flow motion video.

  7. Totally agree about narcissism however the smartphone really hurt the camera industry, thus the camera stores. 10-15 years ago people had to buy at least a compact camera to take photo. Some were moving to DSLR for "quality reason". All this market segment is now lost, eaten by the smartphones which are "good enough" for the majority of soccer moms, respectable dads and teenage travelers. In the early 2000s the compact market was driven by the transition from film to digital, then came the megapixel war and around 2006-2008 the ridiculous super-zoom war (Panasonic TZ, etc.). There was some marketing incentive to buy new camera and in fact the quality really got better every year. Same for the video, all the dads who bought a camcorder in the 80s-early 2000s have now moved to smartphones. All these people were not particularly creative, their compact camera and camcorder were locked in the Auto mode. Now that any smartphones can shoot reasonably good high megapixel pic with 2-4x zoom (even if digital) and sharp 4k video + slow mo people don't see why they should buy a compact camera with similar IQ or bother with bulky DSLR. Add to this the narcissism and rise of social media, the development of online business and concentration of the market (B&H, Amazon, etc.) you have all the ingredient for a dying retail industry: loss of volume, shifting customer' habits, unfair business competition.
  8. I have the GH5 and I never really managed to use the wifi and App properly. The App is a royal pain to pair with the camera and it's very unstable. On my 6D the procedure is also very complex to setup but stable afterward. Looks like they still don't get it and it goes beyond Canon & Nikon.. I don't think there is any "winning back". Why would most people bother with large and costly camera ? Most people are 100% satisfied with their smartphone pic. Even GoPro is in the bad position now that you can find decent action cam for $79 on ebay. For video, 99% of the crowd haven't heard about NLE, they just film vertically and share it on FB or IG. Done.. Honestly I just changed my 4 years old phone with a new one and the quality is very good. As for the stores it goes beyond the camera shops. Bricks and mortar business exposed to the competition of internet giants are dying. How are you supposed to compete against online businesses that benefit from tax optimization, social dumping and economies of scale ? Unless you have a critical mass, a service centric model or a loyal customer base, the fight is very uneven.
  9. To be confirmed but that would be surprising http://www.canonwatch.com/canon-eos-6d-mark-ii-seems-less-dynamic-range-eos-80d-eos-6d/
  10. Yeah, there is nothing worst than trying to "fit it all". I do a lot of short 2-4 min video and I often have 1-2 hours of footage for that.
  11. Well, I guess it's the PR/Marketing people who sent you a unit ? They know who you are. They don't expect any DPR "golden award" from an independent voice like yours. So why did they send you a unit ? Looks like they are probably as frustrated as we are about the situation and I think it would be worth to give them a little feedback. Perhaps they are trying to "use" you to pass a message like: "if we are not heard internally, let's back our position with external voices". Who else can they use ? Some hairy clowns on youtube or the usual bunch of corrupt press giving 5 stars rating and pre-order links ? Most of the job is halfway done with your previous articles. You could do a mini review/article and send the link over to the Canon folks.

Actually it really depends on the final product and what you want to do. How many video do you have to produce ? How long are they ? Do you need to include interview ? Do you need multiple angle of shot and hence have a crew or production assistant to help you ? For the drone, how is the regulation in this city ? Usually urban flying is complicated, might be better to hire a pro who has the appropriate licenses and clearances. But here are some general remarks: Drone: P4P is the a great machine, a good compromise in terms of price, portability and IQ between the low bitrate Mavic and the big and costly Inspire 2 Camera and gimbal: the two go together, the Crane is great with the GH5 but you will something much larger (ie ronin) if you plan to use pro camera such as FS5 or C serie camera. The larger the camera the bigger the gimbal (and the physical effort to move it around). For small camera you can go GH5 or A7s. Lenses: depends on your system but you will probably need an assortment of fast prime and regular zoom (24 70 f2.8). The usual combo: 16-35 f2.8, 24-70 f2.8, 70 200 f2.8 plus a few fast primes 14 f2.8, 24 f1.4, 50 f1.4, 85 1.8 or 1.4 Audio: I would stick with the classic Rhode Pro stuff Other: hoya ND filters, Polar Pro filter for drone and gopro, GoPro 5 with mounting accessories for FPV stuff. Tripod you can t go wrong with Manfrotto or Oben, get the carbon fiber version if possible, spare batteries (watson are cheap), a few reflectors. For the SD, Sandisk is a combat proven brand.
  13. Not even, Canon will only release proper 4k (ie not 1.74 crop..) when all the industry will be at 8k60, then we will have 4k24p with moire on Canon DSLR. - New sensor, That the least they can do on a new $2k camera. Nice that they haven't used the one from the original 6D... - Digic 7 and extended ISO range: what does it bring in real life ? Faster processor and then old UHS-1. What is the real usable ISO ? Max ISO doesn't really matter 32 000 what not usable on the 6D anyway - DPAF: again what's the point ? This is mainly a video feature and video quality is going to be poor - 45 cross type AF: yeah that's nice actually but the original 6D was very bad on AF - Touch screen and Swivel: nice but nothing revolutionary here neither. It's on many entry level camera - Weather resistant: yes good point - Wifi, NFC, bluetooth, GPS: the wifi and GPS are already on the first 6D, a bluetooth and NFC chip is not very ground breaking, they cost a few dollars and many devices have that nowadays. Actually that would be more important to develop a real ecosytems around that because the current Canon App isn't exactly great. Hopefully the Wifi connection will be easier to setup on the mk2 because that's a huge un-user friendly mess on the 6Dmk1 (the GH5 app is even worst to be fair). Sure the 6Dmk2 will be an ok camera but 5 years and $2000 for that ? The D750 come very close or better (dual slot) and was released 3 years ago. It's available at almost half the price brand new on ebay. Personally I love my 6D but I can't justify $2k for the mk2.
  14. +1 For the Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 (but has not filter thread) The 14mm f2.8 Samyang is great for the price ($300) but no filter thread either and it has a weird mustache distortion (noticable with 5Dmk4 crop in video ?) The Tokina 11-16 is also a great lens with a 77mm filter thread, the V1 is very affordable but has a lot of CA. Built like a tank with a nice hard stop on manual focus at infinity (at least my version) Sigma 20mm is wonderful as well but no filter thread. Then there is the "native" EF 11-24 f4 is you really want to go wide. It has a back filter slot but the beauty is $3k...
  15. Yeah but even on the Photo side the 6Dmk2 is very disappointing. They move in 2008 with the 5mk2 creating the DSLR video thing by mistake. Now they do everything they can to cripple their DSLR. For me the final hit was the 5Dmk4. I don't know why people still expect anything from Canon. They never fail to disappoint release after release. I already stopped buying EF lenses, I got a GH5 for video and I'm really considering switching to Sony with the next A7R and A7S camera. Especially now that Sigma and Rokinon are jumping in the FE boat.
  16. Apparently, Canon did it again. A 6D had sex with an 80D.. taaadaaaaaaaaa 2000$..... http://www.canonwatch.com/canon-eos-6d-mark-ii-images-specifications/#disqus_thread
  17. Don't underestimate Canon ! "See impossible". I'm sure they can fuck it up big time: 6 or 8 mpx bump, a flip screen, 1080/60 and they are good until 2022...
  18. The errors happens "around timecode 1:22:04 You could try to nest this sequence or render the clip at this time and insert the rendered clip back it in your timeline Also, during export, pick QUEUE, then you can choose to render using CPU or GPU. Sometime using CPU fixes the problem (but it will take more time to render)
  19. A little bit off topic but does anyone managed to make the Panasonic App and the GH5 work on Android ? I spent 30 minutes the other day on it and the App was complete crap. Very unstable and complicated to connect. Is it just me ?
  20. Short video of Chicago trying the GH5. There is 4K, 180 VFR slomo (with aliasing...), timelapse and hyperlapse. Even though the sensor can't match my 5D and 6D for ISO, the DR seems better for timelapse.
  21. I bet there is not pet mode on this camera. I'll keep my Rebel, thanks. Other than that it seems to be a very nice camera for the Pro without too much of the usual Canon jerk specs.
  22. Actually the information was wrong... Here is the official Canon statement "the Canon EOS C200 and EOS C200B Digital Cinema Cameras are scheduled to be available in August 2017 for estimated retail prices of $7,499 and $5,999 respectively." The difference between the C200 and C200B seems to be the handle, EVF, grip and small monitor. Basically the C200 is ready to go. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1340800-REG/canon_2215c002_eos_c200_ef_camera.html
