  1. Panasonic is apparently only going to give us easier files to edit with the 400mbps All-I. I'm not sure that it will bring much on the IQ department (to be tested). It was the same with the 100mbps vs 200mbps All-I on the GH4 in 1080. However Canon gave us a very old inefficient codec on the 1Dx2 and 5D4 for the sake of segmenting its products. There is no reasons of having such a 90s crap codec on a 2016 camera. This is just a bad joke from Canon. I was waiting for the 5D4 before making any new investment. Now I bought a GH5 for video and kept my 6D/5D3 for photo. I will never understand Canon's logic... Yes, 100% happy with the GH5. I'm just curious about this 10 bits thing.

  3. Thanks guys for all your very interesting feedback. So according to this guy there is no advantages of using 10 bits because of the low bitrate On the other side plenty of people are also reporting real gain using 10 bits.
  4. Thanks for the info Axel. So far I'm having very good results with the 709 Like and Natural profile in 8 bits mode.   5. Yeah, exactly, I have the felling that this 10 bits thing just a new marketing thing (maybe I'm wrong, some people here notice a difference in V-Log). A little bit like the mega pixel or zoom race until people realized that having a lot of Mpx with a shitty lens was useless. On the GH5 I'm not sure about the gain of 10bits with "shitty" bitrate. I mean, I was editing 10 bits ProRes from the Inspire 2 recently and the difference is very clear during grading (as well as the huge size of the files). So far I haven't found any serious review about the 10 bits mode except a ton of "youtube experts" with questionable background. Hopefully @Andrew Reid will check this aspect soon on his GH5.
  6. Thanks for your feedback. I'm not bitching at the GH5, I have one and I love it. I'm also not trying to make silly comparison with a RED. All I'm saying is that so far I haven't really seen the advantage of the 10 bits codec and I have doubts about any real gains considering the amount of compression. People are also getting very exited about the new super expensive V60 card to get the 400mbps bitrate but it will be All-I and I'm not sure there will be any image quality gain neither. Personally I will stick to the current codec. That being said I'm not exactly a pro-colorist or codec expert I'm interested about your opinions here based on real life shooting experience.
  7. I think the point is not much about 10/12/14 bits but about the amount of data behind (the bitrate). Some camera record in 10bits prores HQ with massive bitrate and the difference is very visible over 8 bits. It's like having a car with an amazing engine (10bits) but the transmission (bitrate) is not designed to handle it so in the end there is no real difference. Anyway, I'm just checking if I'm missing something. So far I'm very happy with the GH5 and I mostly shoot in 4k60, I find the colors to be better than the GH4 and the codec is doing good.
  8. I got a GH5 and I love it. However I always had doubts about the 10bits thing. What's the point of 4K in 10 bits with such a low bitrate ? Of course I'm aware of the incoming 400mbps upgrade but this bitrate will use a less efficient compression mode. In other word the bitrate will be higher but the compression will be less efficient, so back to square one (even though it will surely help for editing, All-I being less intensive for the computer) - Right now the 150mbps 10bits mode uses the IPB (interframe) compression method - The new 400mbps 10bits will use the All-I (intraframe) compression method After doing a few grading tests I was not able to see any clear difference between the 8 bits and 10 bits modes unless I pushed the slider to unreasonable ends, in any case, both image were unusable at this point. Just to be clear, I really like the GH5, no regrets here. I'm also not a pro colorist. So what do you guys think based on your experience so far ? Have you seen clear advantages with the 10 bits mode ?
  9. I did a quick test shooting 180 VFR and apply twixtor (10%). This slow mo is equivalent of shooting at 600fps. Each sequence that last 10 sec in the video was 0.5 sec in real life. Obviously this is far from behind perfect, the subject it boring, twixtor soften the image and generates artifacts. Just a test to see how far I could push the slomo mode with somehow decent results.

  11. Yes, it's far from being perfect. I just wanted to see how far I could push it with decent results. Plus I did zero effort to find a good subject and frame the shot right. Purely a specs shoot to test the VFR.
  12. I played with the VFR mode this afternoon. Added a bit of Twixtor to get a 20x/600fps equivalent slow motion. Each 10 seconds sequence in the video represent 0.5 sec in real life. Of course the VFR hurts the image quality and Twixtor soften the image but the result is not bad. I really love the GH5.
  13. The new canon FF in 2018 is still speculation and even if that happens we can count on Canon to be another disappointment in the video department. They'll probably only have 4k30 perhaps with no or little crop. With DPAF and canon color it will still be nice though. Meanwhile Sony will have 4k60 and much more stuff, the GH6 will probably be 8k, etc Yeah there's 4k on the 5D4 but the thing is so crippled that it's useless. Just good to put a "4k ready" sticker on the box.
  14. Yeah, same thing here. I bought this unit for my GH4 and it fits perfectly. Very tight. No need for expensive speedbooster with an all manual FD lens.
  15. That might be a little bit tricky to balance your gimbal with this weight on top of your camera. Try to keep everything as low as possible to maintain a lower CG. Also, the monitor and mic may block some gimbal motion, be aware about that. That being said, the Zhiyun Crane V2 is a great unit. Make sure you get the V2, same price as the V1 and the V2 is just reaching the store at the moment.
  16. Exactly, size matters here. Also, the spare batteries are cheaper on the Mavic ($100 Vs $150 for the P4). As for decision, DJI is growing like crazy, there was not even 10 months between the P4 and P4Pro announcement... They are also going to release the Spark in a few days (some kind of mini mavic, more for selfie). The Mavic is totally usable for pro job as long as you are careful with the expo and white balance. Highly compressed 8bit video is not very forgiving... The P4 handles better in windy conditions. A 1" sensor means larger optic, thus larger gimbal motors, more clearance for the ground and prop (not) in view etc, thus more weight, less flight time. It also has an impact on balance and vibration/jello. At this level every change is going to impact the whole system.
  17. The Mavic has its merits. It's a tiny drone that fits at the bottom of your bag. Similar thing for the GoPro camera. Sometime you can not carry a big camera around. Yeah, that's the main issue with the Mavic/P3P and GoPro. The bitrate max out at 60mbps which is way too low for the 4K. It's not related to the sensor. Despite its m43 sensor, the X5 Inspire 1 also had a 60mbps bitrate which generates the same issue. Yeah, the Inspire 2 ProRes or Raw is great but the drone is 8x time the price and is a massive pain to carry arround. It's like trying to compare a FS7 and a GoPro. Doesn't make much sense.

  19. No problem with TSA and the gimbal. They don't care. I travel all the time with all sort of drones and gimbals, worst case scenario TSA will "swipe" your device and battery for explosive detection.   20. I don't know, is it really ? The Pana 12mm f1.4 is almost 50% pricier than the Sigma Art 24mm f1.4 which is outstanding. I really have hard time buying M43 lens that are way more expensive than much better FF equivalent. The Tamron 24-70 f2.8 for instance is so much better than the Lumix 12-35 f2.8 (I have both). Not saying top M43 lenses are bad but the price tags are a little bit too stiff considering the price/quality ratio.

It's a subjective choice and depends of what you want to shoot but for me, here is what I have: - Pana 12-35 f2.8 V1: The V2 is $300 more and doesn't seem to bring more features and quality - Pana 7-14mm f4: The Oly equivalent (f2.8 though) is just too expensive for me. The Pana is sharp enough for 4K video - Sigma 30mm f1.4: Cheaper and better than the Pana 25 f1.4 if you don't mind mind the extra 5mm - Rokinon 12mm f2: Works great, the Pana 12 f1.4 is just too expensive. $1200 !!! (the EF Sigma 24 f1.4 is at $750) - For zoom stuff I have the Canon FD 50mm f1.4 and 200mm f2.8 with a cheap $20 adapter. Does the job great if you are ok with manual focus. You can find these lens for very cheap on ebay. In term of image stabilization, the IBIS should work (I haven't tried yet) - Pana 14-140mm: I sold this one due to micro-jitters issue which is a common problem on this lens
  22. Try to start with easy pan from A to B, sideways in straight line. Curve, move in/out from the subjet is always harder to shoot and stabilize. Then use the tracker in AE to stabilize frame by frame... And be ready to fail, a lot... That's part of the hyperlapse thing. Good luck
  23. House of card intro is a great classic from Drew Geraci but it was all done with a slider (dynamic perception). That's an "easy" hyperlapse method. For long hyperlapse you'll need much more work (manual move shot move with a tripod and frame by frame post-stab).
