  1. I’ve never owned or used a gimbal. Always shot handheld or stationed. This is kind of in my price point, and my bday is coming up, so should I put in an order? But I own some Sigma Art lenses and they’re heavy and long, so worried it might not work? What do you guys think, and what are your tips for someone interested in getting his first gimbal?

  2. I usually use preview, to well yeah, preview my edits for my producers. But for a while now I've known it desaturates the image. Same thing with Quicktime.

As seen below, only VLC is showing the correct colors. (1.Preview 2. VLC 3. QuickTime)

Anyone knows why this happens? It's a ProRes file so it would just make sense that at least QuickTime would render the colors correctly. Only VLC does.

    Very curios....

This is ridiculous guys. Maybe there should be a 'bullshit' thread?

Is it a good idea to talk about the projects people hope o have this camera in time for? I'm shooting a film festival in September and really hope I have this in my bag by then.

I’m going to a music event in the woods of Pennsylvania in August and would have loved to have it by then but I guess it’s big brother OG pocket will do! Gah, I really wish they would just drop it now for early preorders.

  4. Yeah, that’s def not what it looks like on my BMPCC’s DNGs. Can you please upload a DNG to here?

you will need to check that your record settings (Dynamic Range) are set to 'Film' CinemaDNG RAW. I usually set the viewfinder to 'film' too

Keep ISO to the native 800 (experience tells me it is pointless doing anything else in reality)

You can’t video DR on pocket while shooting RAW. It defaults to Film.

Oh man, these videos are so absolutely clue- and senseless! They only state the obvious (namely what can also be gathered from BM's camera spec sheet), tout things as new and revolutionary that the old pocket had, too (12bit raw, and even without fans) - while nobody asks the questions that really matter:

    • Will the camera have an OLPF? If not, will moiré be an issue as with the old Pocket?
    • Will the sensor filter stack remain as thin as in previous BM cameras? Will that mean that you will still need IR cut filters and BM camera-specific Speed Boosters?
    • Will the old BMCC Speed Booster work with this camera, or do you need the Speed Booster Ultra?
    • What is the quality of built-in mics and built-in preamps, and to which degree is fan noise audible in recordings with the internal mic?
    • Is the windowed mode only available for high frame rates (for people who want to continue shooting with s16 glass)?
    • Will 4K raw acquisitation work with 300MB/s SD cards and external USB-C flash drives, or will these two interfaces be limited to recording ProRes?
    • Is the camera ISO invariant like all previous BM cameras, or will ISO be baked into the Raw footage because of the Sony sensor?
    • How will the stills photo mode work? (We already know that it will only take raw stills in CinemaDNG mode and only JPEGs when in ProRes recording mode.)
    • What will be the battery life in different usage scenarios (Raw vs. ProRes recording, phantom power vs. no phantom power, lens stabilization vs. no lens stabilization)?
    • What will be the limitations for outdoor use and operating temperatures given the fan slots?
    • Which functions will be assignable to the function keys?

I agree. And he says he misses actual buttons and dials but it has the specific buttons right there, huge, next to the record button with a scroll dial. Was he even there lol

    Interesting. Didn't know hat.

Yes, tripods. Have a look at the Sirui monopod. It's fantastic:

This is the carbon version. I have the aluminum version, cost 160€ in a regular shop.

I am also planning to use a gimbal, own the Ronin M (too big) and the Zhiyun Crane ("1"). We could use hyperfocal distance instead of AF. Or we use something like this.

Most of all, I have the best idea for a new "rig". Consisting of parts for under 10€.

    @John Brawley

    Please tell us:

Will there be something you can show us in advance?

I own that Sirui and LOVE it.

But how are you so sure they're "greater minds" than I? I've worked on higher profile projects than most of these guys...

I mean, I know Andrew from here and Luke from his YouTube (also he’s being nurtured by pana, don’t think he’d come out at say anything bad as long as he has the relationship he has with them). Who are these other people, vloggers?! Also Jonpais, now you’re personally attacking and that is offensive. I work with some pretty well know clients too, and I don’t think we’d ever consider using the GH5, we did use the a7s for some underwater shots for last gig but that was because we didn’t wanna case up the Alexa nor Digital Bolex. Anyway, why are we still talking about this?

Bullshit! I've done this in the past, it's a perfectly acceptable way to fund manufacturing cost. You spend your capital on R&D, then you do pre-orders to fund initial manufacturing.

So you say that when I paid B&H 1400USD it goes straight to BMD? I’m just curious, I would think that all vendors already pay BMD for preorder stock so they already have the initial funding. Say that B&H might get an overload of preorders and then give BMD even more money as result. Again, personally, I don’t think is preordering has given BMD a dime of our money (not as of yet at least). Just my 2 cents and I have no actual idea how this works.

I didn't call YOUR footage trash... just the GH5 "image". Obviously, content is king... and I'm sure you can create great cinematic content. In fact, most modern cameras are going to allow you to create an image most audience find acceptable. BUT... let's be honest... this is a pixel peeping forum... and we're all image snobs! So I'm just being blunt. I have no idea why everyone's getting personal about shooting skills... were talking about the camera IMAGES here... not personal cinematography skills.

Again, Jonpais, you have to calm down. If people dislike the footage produced by a camera then that has nothing to do with your final product. They’re talking about the footage out of camera, not your personally graded and corrected footage. Jesus, calm down.

What about using the WD Passport pro thing as a charger / recording media? Seems like the perfect device for just that.

I don't think it can spit out enough juice to actually charge the camera. I had problems with this looking for a power bank to charge my Switch.

  10. 2 minutes ago, forofilms said:

If you can't charge from an external source while simultaneously recording to an external drive then it kind of defeats the purpose of having the feature to be able to long-record via usb-c.

Get a DC to USBC? Use the USBC for HDD and DC to charge from powerbank?

“Hostile attitude” hahahahahahahahahahaha... you are losing it Jon. There was nothing condescending or hostile about my comment... you seem to be littering this thread with spiteful comments about the GH5 and people’s opinion of it, but in a lot of ways you’re right... the GH5 is great and capable of many things, so for most people’s needs, it is the better camera... what is so hostile or condescending about that?

I agree with you mercer, sorry Jon. Been skipping your comments cause all you keep talking about is that damn GH5. Little Pana-fanboy on the line? Can we stick to the subject OF Pocket4K here?

  12. So excited to start seeing all the third party accessories to come now! @IronFilm, in response to your reply, I am curious to see what metabones might cook up for this one specifically as Simon Westland says in the youtube interview by slashcam. But also curious to see cages, and what pistol grip gimbals might be able to fit it etc.

  13. So in response to my previous question. I own only 3 lenses, all Nikon mount, Sigma Art 18-35 and 55-100 and 12mm Rokinon Cine DS. I assume the Sigma ones will work with an adapter as they’re 1.7x right? Any thoughts on the 12mm Rokinon? And using a speedbooster with non FF lenses would just be stupid right?
