  1. So today I was shooting some portraits for a company, and I noticed for the first time ever that there was an exclamation mark where the REC sign is. I googled and learned it was the dropped frame warning.

So I own a first gen first batch BMPCC and have NEVER seen this before. Should I be worried? Could it just be my card (I've used the same 2 Sandisk extreme pro 64Gb cards since release)? Gah, now I'm so worried as I'm shooting on Sunday.

Thank god I'm only pulling stills from todays shoot!

  2. Been working with DR14 for a bit and I don't get their snap feature while editing. I want it on cause I want clips to snap on to each other's ends but while scrubbing it skips like 5seconds at either start or end of clip. Don't know if what I'm writing makes sense but the problem is so annoying! I also wish it was easier to rearrange all bins and stuff under edit mode to make it suit the style I'm used to with my custom Premiere layout.

  3. I haven't tried 14 yet because of working on site. But I will when I get back home, and as always when people complain about speed and such I'm always surprised to see how well my MacBook Pro from 2012 can seem to handle so much more than your computers. Same thing when 4K footage really became a thing. I edited 2 10min that was shot Ursa Mini 4K last year with no problems at all. Even did massive layering. Feels like a lot of complaining just for conplainings sake to be honest.

Again, will try it out with some heavy raw footage when I get back home and let you all know how it works on a 5 year old laptop.

    Hey,

This update(audio, plugins and stabilizer improvement) is great and all. But I am really bummed out about the price drop from $999 to $299 for Resolve Studio version. I mean the resale value just dropped massively. I own 2 davinci dongles, and this hurts my wallet big time! This business is hardcore. 70% price drop over one night, I feel kinda f##**d by BM at this point.

Bummed?! This is amazing news for us poor people. My adobe student version I got together with a friend who was in college a year ago ended and she does not want to continue sharing as she has gone into script supervising. So me saving 600 a year on a suite plan. Great time to head into a fully DaVinci workflow!

  5. When I read topics like this it always makes me wonder what the OT's skill set is like as is, do you have anything to share? The reason I ask is because I feel like a lot of people today, especially the younger generation (say under 40) believes everything can be done with the latest tech. But I feel like it's more like an obsession to just have the latest or the most expensive. Nothing is about skill or talent anymore. Sorry for excessive rant... Just curious what you (OT) has done before and I'm interested in seeing your skill with a camera as is.

  6. Thanks guys! Yeah, I understand the lens will make it very front heavy, as the lens is 1.8lbs itself, but according to the limitations of the crane which is 2.6lbs I believe. It should be working. Usually when I mount my camera I mount it on the speedbooster to get a more even weight distribution. Also looking at some videos on YouTube, I see that the space between their cameras and the the back end of the crane is like 2 inches. I should probably head over to B&H and see if they'll let me play around with it. Again, thanks for the replies!

  7. All these things you can get for free with your existing setup, just practice. I have zero problems with focus and I pull manually myself with rig on shoulder sometimes when doing "run and gun". Just close down your aperture if you have focus problems. Buying new gear is not always the answer. On every single point you ask for theirs a simple solution but it requires practice. Like with every skill in life.

EDIT. Oh and I shoot mainly with Blackmagic cameras and own zero stabilized lenses. Hard work, but it pays off.

The short is actually pretty good.

The final shot is a little unclear. We didn't get much of a view of the SUV earlier, so it's not an 'ah-hah' moment as much as it should be. And now that we're in this upper layer in the meta fiction, the meaning could be shifted...is that her actual vehicle in this world? It would be more clear if we had a shot of both of the cars. Maybe show her car and the SUV creeping in, still following her.

The other main problem I had is that a lot of the first half of the film felt like filler. I understand this is necessary to an extent and common in horror films, to put you in the protagonist's world so you feel the tension as they start to be menaced. But, a lot of little details could be trimmed. Since we can't actually see what she's writing on the laptop screen, a lot of the time spent around that could be trimmed. Or her running sequence, etc. Just generally tighten things, since nothing essential is being communicated. For a short like this, minimal is best.

Love the BMPCC image on this. The noisy/grainy image is great for narrative, it really is today's S16 film.
What lighting was being used when she turns the lamps off in the bedroom?

Thanks for your input! Means a lot and will hopefully get around to get a tightened up version online in a few weeks. Regarding light, I shot the whole thing with one ikan led panel I picked up a few years ago for pretty cheap. It can be seen in the BTS footage I posted further up. Am excited to dive into this again!

I picked up Plural Eyes when it was on special from RedGiant. Takes a lot of the grunt work out and zero learning curve.

I have it too, got it with a NTG2 a long time ago but I tried it twice and can't seem to understand how it works really. It's how it priorities clips and deletes others and both time's I did it it deleted 90% of the clips I wanted. So gave up on it. I have plural eyes 3 something.

Hey Turbo, just looked at your Vimeo page... are you from Philly? I live in South Jersey, about 15 min across the Ben Franklin.

No but my partners mom lives there so we go for every holiday! I'm in NYC.

  10. Thanks redimp! Yeah, audio is going to be a hassle because I never organized it and it was also my first time using my Tascam recorder, but it's all there! Haha

and here's a lil bts after the final shot (third guy owned the house we did the cellar scenes which was a separate house)

Now this IS a thread that will probably go no where :frown:,  but this is the kind of thread that we Need. We need to up our game and put stuff up here to critique, us and them. This is a damn good effort, like it or not, and hell I like it.

Thank you, and yeah, maybe this forum is just more for the technology today than actually creating. We'll see! I think I'm going to sit down this week and review the raw footage and see that I can do... Maybe I'll have a new cut up in a few weeks! Again, both of you, thanks for the encouragement!

  12. Thank you both for such kind words. I still feel like this is still a little above my head at the moment, but you have def made me feel like I should take my time to sit down and really clean and tighten this up! Still, any collaboration is greatly welcomed here! (looking at that last scene where camera goes out of the screen haha).  And that it reminds you of House of the Devil really made my day, I LOVE that movie!

The end twist is simple yet effective, but I am left wondering if there is any meta fiction in the short. Since you had Ida Stein as the director, is there any real life truth to that or is just part of the story? Or are you the female lead of The Lake House as well?

Well, meta and meta, haha, in the script it sounded so easy, but it is part of the ending. Don't want to spoil it without one of those spoiler things but I don't know how to hide my text on this forum.

  13. So in 2014, me and two friends set out to shoot a short with my new BMPCC and for me to learn how to use it through practice. I ended up with 350GB footage, but then put the project on the shelf. I had a 4 page script dabbled down for the shoot and less than 24h to shoot.

Last year I finally decided to put together an assembly cut and wanted to share it here. I learned through the assembly cut that I clearly didn't get enough coverage and some of the scenes just look terrible in terms of my setup and (obviously) because of the time limit.

Okay to the point, I thought it might be fun to salvage what could be saved so have uploaded the assembly here:

    https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4RzH3eFvfE8c21WZEdjTWtTN0U/view?usp=sharing

I was thinking, you who wants to, can download and look and maybe give me some pointers what work and what doesn't. You can def think out of the box and rechange the basic idea of the script and delete scenes you think could go etc. Even pull it into your NLE and move things around.

I did record audio separately that I haven't even touched yet cause I felt so let down with what I had gotten footage wise. But it's still on a drive in case this turns out to be a fun collab with y'all so yeah, audio in this cut is from the BMPCC.

Hope you'll think this will be fun! Can't wait to hear what some of you think, even if it's only a short comment or what you feel you have the time to share.

    Thanks!

  14. I just finished a music video that is premiering on Vice on Monday. The artists paid for a Vimeo Pro account which will let me upload 5Gb, now I have a 2160p Prores 422 file that I wonder if anyone here could help me figure out the best conform for uploading to Vimeo for best quality under 5Gb.

I do have a small amount of grain and am worried stuff will look weird from reading other posts on Vimeo and added grain. Read different things everywhere, and because of work and Vice wanting to review the video beforehand I don't have time render out different options with different codecs.

Am most grateful for any help on this fellow forum friends!

  15. I just feel like Adobe is not caring about meeting expected demands. I always read online "send them a support message and if enough people do it maybe they'll improve" which is so sad to see... I'm doing more and more work in corporate world with quick turn arounds and there's just simple solutions I'd like to see for tedious functions. My point with this thread I guess is more personal than maybe technical, I still feel like Premiere add time to each encoding while DaVinci sweeps through final delivery.

  16. So I've always done my final conform in DaVinci because it just seems to work faster and seems to be handling higher bitrates better. Reason why I'm asking is that tomorrow I'm doing a quick gig for this PR firm and I asked them what software they use and they replied premiere. But DaVinci is free so, should I bother getting it instead?

I don't know the details yet what final conform is but I know that the footage I'm getting from colorist is 10bit DPX.

Yeah, so stick with Premiere or use DaVinci is basically my question...
