Clayton Moore reacted to maxotics in Steve Jobs on Xerox PARC - this video explains EXACTLY why photography companies are failing to innovate with consumer cameras
Having lived through the PC/MAC years I don't remember it as a slam-dunk.  Keep in mind that Gates did the same thing with IBM.  Hindsight for all this is 20/20.
I see the opposite with modern cameras.  What they've been able to achieve in the past 10 years is nothing short of astounding to me.  When I get into film in 1970s, the technology had been more or less the same for 40 years, the high end being 16mm and low-end 8mm.  Think about that, if the tech we were using today was petty much the same as what we were using in 1975!  Yet, I have a Panasonic LX100 in my bag that shoots as well as, if not better, than the quarter-million dollar cameras in "Phantom Menace" 15 years ago.
Better WiFi would be nice, but keep in mind that an app can't access the password to the wireless network and the only real solution is to build a second transmitter and that's not up to the camera companies (it's up to the smartphone makers).  That it works at all, given the constraints, is to be applauded.
The number one problem all cameras make is light sensitivity (as it was in film).  Software can only do so much.  Anyway, there is a rich ecosystem of camera software out there, though not from the camera makers.  Building cameras and building software are two different skill-sets, IMHO.
The biggest problem today is people don't spend the time to experiment and learn how to use the technology they have.  Most people put whatever gadget they have on "auto."  There needs to be more respect, love, and FUN with THE ART OF PHOTOGRAPHY/FILM.
This blog does a great job at that, except when it looks at the glass as half-full and gets into arm-chair business discussions that are better left to the nit-wit junior financial analysts down in The City

I actually got my hands on one of these and an URSA Mini not long ago and knew right away how BMD has the potential, if they stay focused, to push the competition very hard in (affordable by the masses) digital cinema in the next 36 months.  Its not always how well developed a product is at release, but how it effects the market and this release is actually petty important in that way because it puts the competition on notice to stay competitive or loose out.

I assume everyone saw this -

"The log curves for the Varicam, the DVX200, and the GH4 (the latter coming in a firmware update later this year) are exactly the same over their common ranges. The DVX200 and GH4 will simply clip two stops earlier than the Varicam, but that’s still about two stops more than the GH4 currently captures."

A couple of reasons why the market needs to be pro-active about this.  First users are tired of paying good money for camera bodies that are obsolete in 12-18 months.  Second, imagine your a rental house and your faced with having to keep your inventories current, its getting to where its not going to be sustainable.  Keeping your current camera body for 36 months and leveraging firmware (even paid) to keep it updated for that period of time makes much more sense.

I agree Andrew, sad that v-log is still not here on gh4. I'm heavily invested into that camera. But oh well. I'm still happy with my footage in cinelike D thanks to your guide!

For the record I don't think Sony has gone 4k crazy. I think that having 4k in all the new cameras is perfectly sane. The question is, why in 2015 are other manufacturers still charging top dollar for cameras that can only do 1080p? Now thats crazy.
If there is anything groundbreaking about Sony's new lineup it's simply this... it's a clear message that any camera released from this point on, sans 4k will be a certain failure.
To all the naysayers who said 4k isn't necessary... well at least you have the option to record it 1080p if you so choose.
Now here's hoping that A7Rii turns out to be as great as we all want. Honestly, while the crazy low light performance of the A7S is impressive, it's more than most people need. The A7Rii could provide a perfect balance between usable still and video capture. We will soon see how it stacks up.

Either way it seems to me that Canon has some issues here with either the $2,999 version or he $4995 version...ala the XC10 and C300 MKII respectively.  Depending on the images - how could you possibly rationalize spending $15,000 over $4995.  I was about to sell my EF glass but now......not so much.  I could see how (down the road) my GH4 could be my B camera........... just sayin..........

Clayton Moore reacted to FilmBrute in EOSHD opinion: smartphones are not killing DSLRs, apps and online services are
Bit silly really. Majority of those app purchases are not photo/video related (game apps). Of the ones that are, a very high percentage are from demographics who wouldn't be purchasing DSLRs anyway. Takes quite a bit of imagination to come up with a conclusion that instagram is killing 6D sales or whatever. I mean, if Canon DSLRs rocked iOS do you think people would flock to buy giant DSLRs all of the sudden? Like all the baby mammas and tweens who upload stuff 200x a day would be rocking DSLRs? No. Why would a casual user want to lug around a 800g body when you can have a tiny little phone that does everything? Has nothing to do with apps; everything to do with utility and form factor. Take away the apps and everyone still wants an iphone rather than a dslr...
As far as sales sucking, IDK what the data is; but around the time of the 7D, 5DmkII, T2i I would expect sales to have been humungous; the recession was coming to an end (ended?), DSLRs were rocking awesome new video, etc... I'm guessing the sluggish sales today are similar to what sales were like pre T2i/7D, ie: "normal".
As for sluggish technology... Well, I actually live in Silicon Valley. Yes it is bad in the sense that if you live in a poor neighborhood, your house is worth only 1 million. Or every asshole now has to drive an EV vehicle. Or you cannot eat at a restaurant without checking Yelp. Yeah, that all sucks. But on the flip side, most of the people are extremely intelligent/creative/hard working. So, for me it is shocking how archaic Canon is w/ respect to DSLRs. I mean wtf have they done in the last 5 years? Canon should have articulating screens on everything, purchase Magic Lantern and incorporate it, and develop a half way decent sensor. And after all that, figure out a way to load Android so that people can be more social with their DSLRs (like monitor live video/menus remotely, upload to instagram, etc..). I hope Tesla gets bored and starts making cameras.

Their not moving into software and other current sharing technologies shows where their commitment has not been.
Whats maddening is Not just ML firmware but what Canon did in sending signals to others that turn out to be mixed signals ……

    As far as video goes...
Canon early on by their participation in video signaled to third party venders they were committed to the market and cool accessories were developed and brought to market.
Now we realized based on their reaction to Magic Lantern and their lack of participation in new media, they were not committed at all.
Now as I search for a good little USB remote for my GH4, I find the cool affordable remotes were ONLY developed for Canon based on what those venders interpreted as Canon's commitment at the time.  Upon reaching out, I find one vender no longer has the resources to develop a new product for Panasonic or SONY.  The other is working on something - who knows how long that will take.
The result for uses has been not good at all.

Yeah, I don't know why people get their panties knotted about certain digital cameras not looking cinematic enough.  These are judgements based on what exactly?  Vimeo or YouTube videos from amateur goofballs like me slapping a kit lens on a camera body, lazily applying some ill-conceived color grade, and uploading it?
Jeeze, if it looks too "digital" to you, change the lens, change how you shoot, change the color grade. Okay, maybe a certain camera gets you closer to a subjective cinema-look to start, but it's still up to you to finish the job.
If you can't find a recipe to make your shots cinematic, you're doing it wrong, not the camera.
I'll guarantee you someone with talent and skill could grab my modest Panasonic GM1 and make visually stunning shots while I could run around all day with an Alexa and create a pile of worthlessness if I didn't know what I was doing.
Too much worrying about the wrong stuff when it comes to cameras, I think.

A comment that  caught my attention.  That its much more challenging for professional photographers to make a good living now more then ever.  Thats a thought thats not unimportant in that the market has shrunk.

One of my close friends spent a few years working as a wedding photographer, super talented and very busy and making good money has seen some slowdown.  He has friends who are hurting and those people wont be buying a new Canon anytime soon.  In fact comments are now about what NIKON is doing.

I think that the 5D MK II started a video revolution by accident.
I think it caught Canon by surprise.
I think they road the wave sold a bunch 5Ds and rebels and more importantly glass.
I think they used this wave to build out there Cinema line.
I don’t think they were never comfortable keeping the video beat going in DLRS period for whatever reason.

Problem is the market is evolving very fast and the market it not the same now as it was 5 years ago.  Not in terms of technology and not in terms of who is buying cameras now and how many of them there are and for what purpose.  Canon is too conservative and moves to slow for whats going on now…… they may end up paying a heavy price.
