Yeah, I've watched a loooot between Blurays and Remuxes.
Its a big difference between native (not upscaled) 4K and 1080p. But definitely the best feature it's HDR. I have a high end Sony 4K HDR TV and some material looks stunning... Amazing! It's hard to go back to SDR after a few hours of HDR.
At least for me HDR it's a big deal, maybe the most impressive technology implementation after the 1080p standard. And by far more important than 4K.

Yes, currently THE best quality 4K HDR Bluray is Dunkirk, pure reference quality.

Yes. 4K HDR Blu Rays are a significant quality jump compared to regular Blu Rays. And, given my internet speed, 4K streaming content seems about to be as visually excellent as a standard Blu Ray. Does that makes sense? haha

Ha! Are you referencing the fact that content originally mastered in 2k is regularly upscaled and then released as 4k?  I'm  curious about the physical format, not necessarily the content.

@sam first of all thanks for the very informative test. To me it seems that there are occasional "hiccups" where S8 and 1DC in lesser degree miss a step and skip to the next. So motion cadence (defined as the quality of motion?)  is affected not only by shutter speed,  shutter type &  codec but also consistency of frame times.
But there is no need to get defensive... fuzzynormal just stated his opinion, and to a large extent I agree with him since shutter speed to me affects the motion cadence the most. Even in your test at the beginning I could not tell the difference, and only when I slowed down to 1/4 the speed I could point to the delays. I might not be the most sensitive person to the motion cadence, but I doubt the majority of people would notice either especially when not comparing it with other cameras. For example has anyone complained about the motion cadence of 1DC ?
Now the tessive shutter article that you posted is also very interesting. I didn't know about it, but that at least partly explains our subjective opinion that a slower shutter than 180 can help with the motion blur.
Let's keep this place on the positive side, and I welcome any tests that you do!
    Cheers

Yes. 4k clog mjpeg. I went through a check list for each cam to make sure each setting was as it should be, double checked right before recording.
Fuzzy, Did you check out the link to the cml thread? Or the tessive filter? If it was as simple as changing your shutter why would world class Dp's be discussing this topic?  Why would the tessive filter exist? But I do agree with you about not always needing to adhere to a 180 degree shutter.  Love the look and feel of the clips you posted fairly recently by the way!

Yes it does.  So does the 1dc.
To give a better idea of the distance and speed the pendelum travels, the length of the pendelum is roughly 6ft, and the outside black lines 6ft apart. So for most of the clips, the pendelum is only moving about 3ft. (1.5 ft on each side of the center) Also consider it basically comes to a stop at the peak of it's arc.
In other words, natural human movements, like walking at a casual pace, picking up a coffee or an actor turning their head quite easily have the potential to be effected.   Maybe subconsciously people notice this. Or not ?

What surprised me, even though the clips were synced, there appears to be drift by some of the cams. And not the kind where one or more of the pendelum shots either pull ahead or fall behind the others due to a tiny difference in frame rates like 23.98 vs 24. The clips seem to be drifting minutely ahead in one frame and then getting slightly behind in another and so on through out the clip, but they start and finish all together.
What's easiest to see is the impact of rolling shutter. And we've all seen at least one of the multitude of rolling shutter tests involving cmos sensors.  In the discussions that revolve around these tests, someone usually chimes in with "well the Alexa has a cmos sensor" and then the conversation turns to  "faster read out speed" This, http://tessive.com/mechanical-shutter-comparison/ , which many of us have seen before, at least outlines a difference, stark or otherwise.  Whether this is part of what people notice, or not?

    Great test.
I'm not sure I'm any the wiser about motion cadence but after about 55 seconds of watching that pendulum I definitely felt that I could've been prompted into giving up smoking and getting over my fear of flying

Yeah it can happen. I had that issue. Canon fixed it promptly for free if I remember correctly and even offered to overnight me a free loaner.  If you bought the 1dc new you also were a silver or gold or something cvp member for a year, so you could borrow lenses to test for free or cheap (I forget), and other perks. That's another thing to keep in mind. Reliability. Service. Speed. I guess you could just buy 3 or 4 pocket 4ks though.

No need to feel sorry for us PC users. Resolve has been cutting through 4K raw like butter for years.
I've been shooting raw exclusively since 2013. Stopped using proxies in 2015. I've only ever used regular consumer hardware for post. Frankly, raw is old news for PC users.

I wish they would've implemented the tilt/swivel screen, even if it pushed the price up to $1499 with no Resolve license.

here's a video showing how it looks with the xc10.
you obviously don't have to rig it up big like this example.  I know in your other posts switching systems wasn't in the budget, so this might work.

Wonder if the 'anti-rolling mechanism' really takes care of that rolling shutter plaguing most things Sony is involved with.

@Jim Giberti so essentially, you're saying PRR is better than DNG solely because it provides a better workflow for FCPX users?
In that case, wouldn't it make more sense just to give FCPX native DNG support?
