Well this is a video using a Canon 50 1.4 on a GH4 with a MB XL speed booster. Looks fine using that. But that ends up really s35mm not FF though. I don't see why it would not work.

Probably the best advice and the most missing thing in time.
I'll try to consider in the future, and i'll think less in gears, upgrades and "in post fixing"

to get the "film look" over video, try to use less grading and more in camera capturing of the light and color, so as your footage can look beautiful without hours of grading. Never say ill fix it in post...as for all these luts and things i think they tend to look all the same, you should try to create your own coloring look, and i think less is more, if the end footage looks ungraded for me its a win

We shot this whole thing with the 1dc and Leica R glass. Really loved that. I personally own a set of CONTAX Zeiss lenses and love the look they create.

Canon have made the biggest step forwards with their DSLR technology this year that we've seen since 2008 and the 5D Mark II.
However it isn't the 5D Mark IV that has me excited so much the 1D X Mark II. This is a camera that will see out the next 6 years as the benchmark for others to follow.

Download now for just $19.99 ($29.99 usual price)
The EOSHD C-LOG and Film Profiles Pack is now available and works in both video and stills mode - on all Canon DSLRs.
Crafted using my Canon 1D C as a development camera, the EOSHD Film Profiles pack installs "Canon LOG" to cameras previously without it, plus a range of film simulation modes to DSLRs such as the 5D Mark IV, 5D Mark III, 1D X Mark II and T2i, etc.

Hurt only in terms of storage space, MJPEG codec @ 500Mbps and 4:2:2 is actually a very high quality codec, the best codec among DSLRs and the only 422 codec used apart from cinema cameras.

My two cents about the camera (that I have no intention to buy, by the way):

    - It just made clear that, for Canon, if you want a serious camera for video, you will need a C line camera, DSLR video was an accident. Nothing new;
    - Hence, it is a stills centric camera (and for stills looks like a very good one), with some video features for less demanding needs, especially events;
    - I think that is no coincidence that a lot of previews that were appearing in various sites features opinions from event shooters - especially wedding ones. And for event shooters, turnaround time is crucial - this means less file transfer times, colors right (or almost right) out of the box; it is an area where 1080p is still the king. In event shooting rack focus manually is a problem - lots of movement without stage marks and coordinated positioning, and in this conditions the Dual Pixel AF is a godsend. For them, the MkIV probably will be a very practical camera - and I guess that is a market that sells more than specialized movie shooting.
    - A question: it is not possible for Metabones to make a focal reducer EF->EF just to get the full frame circle from EF lenses and reduces it to the 1,74x crop? I know that it was not possbile in the NX mount, but if they can do it for the EF...(if Brian Caldwell is reading this, maybe he can answer that)...

Yes, for video, is a deception for a lot of us - but will make sense for a lot of people, will be an "enough" camera and easier to use with the Dual Pixel AF. And will sell like hotcakes.

If Panasonic decides to upper their game and make the GH5 a true video centric camera, they could go for the A7S route and offer it with a 12mp S35 sensor (or even a m4/3 one) - less data to process for 4k, and much more sensitivity in low light (for me, the main problem with my m4/3 cameras), and leave the true hybrid role for a G8 camera with a 16 or 20mp sensor. But all the rumours says that it will have the 16mp sensor from the GX80.

i cant wait to see the video in low light and the canon gel murkiness,
if they have managed to fix those two its good for me, the cropped 4k ok i expected that,
the price is not that high for profesionnals, the camera can get its money worth with a couple of jobs
    remember the 1DC price?
On a commercial standpoint, canon is clear you want cinematic cameras feel free to get our C Line....
I dont blame them, they will not antagonise their own products.
as for sony cheap 4k etc...these cameras are not workhorses they fall apart

As long as the 1080P footage is sharp, I'm not too concerned about the 4K crop factor. I still rarely if ever shoot in 4K, and really have no desire to for as long as I can help it. 4 years from now might be a different story of course but as a hybrid stills/video (mostly stills) shooter this camera ticks a lot of boxes for me.

Thanks for the article that I shared. Agree on every point.
Agree too with your comment: I want both in one camera.
The GH5 will take more than decent stills, but it absolutely wont make the job for me. I need D810 level still quality.

So I might grab a D810 + GH5, but then 2 cameras with 2 systems of lens.... And my main use is travel (think 5-10 days trek in Rockies, Patagonia, Iceland, ...) so I am quite pissed.
I tought the A7RII was the one. Bought it, traveled 2 weeks in Cuba and it appeared it was not enjoyable to use (such a pain to switch from stills setup to video setup, poor ergonomics, etc). But here we are the GH5 might be the best camera on the market for its size for video, and the D810 is the best world landscape camera under 20k$ (phase one anyone..?)
So for the moment I don't see a better option. Even if Nikon releases a good 4k option in the next DSLR, it wont have some of the amazing GH5 features like IBIS, good slowmo (hopefully),...
I just wish we get a 4k60p and minimum 120fps Full HD as clean as in an RX100, as well as A PROPER AUTOFOCUS IN VIDEO like the A6300, PLEASE PANA!
    Then I am sold.
Oh and BTW imagine if the GH5 has a good video AF: that would be the BEST gimbal camera ever. Light, slowmo, good AF for tracking on the gimbal, and the power of its 5 axis IBIS + gimbal... wow that will look smooth as hell

Christina Ava reacted to Andrew Reid in Canon 1DX-II vs. 1DC - Which one would you buy?
    I'd go for the 1D C.
The only thing the 1D X II has in its favour is the AF.
The 4K/60fps produces unmanageably large files and will be extremely difficult to edit on any current CPU, besides I'd rather shoot 120fps 2K if it were slow-mo I was after. 60fps doesn't really look that dramatic and there are a ton of cameras that can do 60fps at lower resolutions for a fraction of the cost.
Moving onto the 120fps mush on the 1D X II, obviously just about any other cheaper camera shooting 120fps is a better choice for that, there's nothing special about the image in comparison to the A7S II's 120fps that I can make out so far.
Any other advantages over the 1D C apart from the AF? Nope.

give the crew a $60k budget to shoot, and a $20k budget to pay for the edit/post for a promo video for the nex5n and the results would be just as awe inspiring.  The level of production value on this video makes it impossible to judge the camera because in real instances with these budgets they'd just add another $2k for the rental of an Alexa Mini for the couple of days of shooting.     $80k for 8bit acquisition and a lens mount incapable of using real cinema lenses, or $82k for arriraw acquisition and the ability to use cooke s4's..
Nothing more annoying than consumer advertising techniques selling a dream to people that they'll be using a dslr to shoot these types of projects.

vimeo pro for me is the best choice, also somehow my videos stopped getting cut for using commercial music tracks. I dont know if its because im Pro. I can upload whatever i like.
youtube is a pain for any commercial work. But its a huge marketing tool if you want to reach to the masses.
so for specific clients i would use a sleek account on Vimeo
but for tutorials, videocasts or personal work that i would want to get a mass audience i would use youtube

Christina Ava reacted to Andrew Reid in I am depressed by the lack of articles on this blog.
Hey Michal. I am glad someone has noticed this.
I have all the rumors sites in my news feed and I visit some of the other blogs, the truth is these are majorly demotivating for me.
It seems the general direction of the internet is going away from long form reviews and articles, into quickly thrown up deals and clickbate, along 2-3 minute quickly knocked up youtube video which are nice to have on in the background as you have a cup of tea in the morning, but contain very little actual useful information. If all the attention is going into the wrong content, so what motivation do I have to carry on with EOSHD?
There's still some great stuff out there but it's few and far between, and getting worse.
So I actually share your depression with the state of affairs.
EOSHD articles I used to do are almost unviable today... the formula is broken... the amount of effort required versus the lack of reward in putting so much information out there for free.
Geez. Thanks for the support... not.
Facebook and Instagram content is where it's at, sadly.
A finger swipe, 2 seconds, next.
In the end the audience will regret allowing the internet to dissolve into a trivial social network where appearances are valued above substance.

Christina Ava reacted to Zach Ashcraft in Why Learning to Color is Important for DPs
My biggest frustration with color is just the difficult of grading video vs. raw stills. I feel like I have complete control and understanding of my images when I open up a raw file in lightroom. When it comes to compressed video files its an entirely different story, theres just so much less I can accomplish with ease.
It seems like the new lumetri interface in premiere is pretty similar, but still not nearly as flexible unless you're shooting raw. Looking forward to the day where its practical from a space/processing perspective.

    fascinating
i did this, and i gotta say, i found the look of the show – including all aspects of art direction which appear on screen – to be completely forgettable and boring
i watched several different clips from season one and two and my general critique is that color and lighting are not being used dramatically in terms of storytelling in a lot of the shots
dont get me wrong, its clearly technically sound, but its boring
but boring in a very pretty, attractive way, which forces you to look at it more than through it – like a window. and this is a disconnect in terms of immersion and suspension of disbelief – storytelling
in general it also looks too much like crappy-poo reality, which we all know too well
so my assessment is that you would like this show more if color was used in a more meaningful way
let me blow your mind with an analogy:
