A lot of the innovation in software happens in open source projects in which there is a lot of input and freedom to experiment.  On the other hand, some popular proprietary apps have enthusiastic users contributing novel plug-ins.

I don't think that there is much lacking in open-source imaging/production software, and there are also proprietary options for Linux/BSD.

Price is one thing.  But I think some people are attracted to the idea of not being chained by the corporate monopolies of Apple or Microsoft.  The idea of never ending rent for  adobe products grinds with me as well.  But as you say, It seems as if we don't have all the same options available with linux, which is why most of us stick with Windows or Os X.  Though I am very interested to hear about any potential alternatives.

We need more Zach's in here!

I mostly gravitate toward crime fiction. Started a production company with my childhood buddy called The Sabi Company nearly a decade ago. We've made 7 or 8 features in that time. As well as a handful of shorts. Our latest, Down and Dangerous, was our first genre picture and the first to not lose money.
We've also created Artis Entertainment to distribute our titles directly and through partnerships with other distributors. Most recently, we signed with Paramount to distribute Down and Dangerous internationally. To a filmmaker like me, that is an unforgettable milestone that I'm very proud of, even if it is a bit like winning the lottery.

The next movies include more action, a sci-fi survival story, a neo-noir, and hopefully countless others. I have no other creative or professional ambitions in life other than to make movies until i'm dead.

10 bit is a huge, huge leap... If the GH4 is still banding, then they must have screwed up their implementation or someone screwed up their tests.
10bit + a proper log is a very, very good balance of image quality and file size/workflow.

My money was on Lumix/Panasonic to bring 10bit recording to the GH5... but it seems the DVX200 is only 8 bit, will they better their new prosumer model? Canon/Nikon seem unlikely to be first to push new tech and Sony seem to be staying put with 8 bit. Feels like the dream of 10bit in a DSLR/Hybrid is still a long way off.
10bit seems to be the last big sticking point. We are seeing 4K, we are seeing log, we are seeing incredible ISO... Yet 10 bit is probably as important a feature as any.

Nope. If you're stuck in that loop, another camera is not going to get you out of it.

Remember that with the Ursa, you'll need a battery solution and (unless you already have an SDI VF) their $1500 EVF looks like a must-have. Throw in the shoulder kit and realistically you're around $8k for ready-to-run - still an impressive value though.
The 4.6 camera really looks like your next 5 to 8 years worth of camera. Hard to say that for anything else on the market, but what else is coming that will be a must-have feature? 6k? 8k? 6k 3D? 18 stops of DR? 1000 fps at 6k becomes a staple of corporate videos and TV spots?
Am I missing something or is it viable to think the 4.6k mini would get one out of the yearly "do I upgrade??" agonizing… I think I'd even stop reading reviews for at least three years.

BM should stick the new sensor in the old BMCC casing.... Probably have to drop to 4K/30fps and 1080/60p, but would still sell a truck worth

Basicially to get similar output you would need a a7rii with an odyssey 7q+ and would end up costing same as ursa mini.

Also in 6 months the a7s ii will come out.
So before you buy. Have patience. Wait for reviews.
Dont blow all your money on the new toy.
Issues of skew and jello. Look harder at images

    Rent and compare cameras.

You know NX500 as a great little video camera that shares many of NX1's awesome qualities. What may not be obvious is that it can work as a great teleconverter. Using its APS-C sensor and 4K crop and placing its 4K footage onto a 1080p timeline, you can turn a 200 mm zoom into a 1,000+ mm ultra zoom (200 x 1.54 x 1.58 x 2.13 = 1,037 mm). I got an NX500 yesterday and thought I'd post some footage of birds on our street that I shot today with my Canon 70-200 L lens. Try it out if you have the NX500.

This is where Sony has an advantage, sensor development.
Making their models obsolete might seem like a bad strategy, but what they achieve in the meantime is market domination.
I think it is great to have companies innovate as fast as Sony. I was really tired of waiting for even simple things from companies such as Nikon, Canon, etc. I also don't understand why people buy cameras as an "investment", if the camera is not worth ( to you ) the asking price don't buy it. Maybe that will force companies to stop using this aggressive pricing model.

Did anybody notice how the ISOs cleaned up at 4000 and 10,000 in S35? It was quite impressive. The noise would start to get fuzzy, then BAM! it would clean up. The reminds me of the Panasonic Varicam having two native ISOs. Could this be a similar happenstance? If so, then this camera is more surprising than previously thought. What else can Sony do to win me over more? I already own an FS100, maybe this is my chance to get something new? I hope so.

Well we can expect to see people unloading their A7Ss on ebay and the prices dropping pretty soon, as it seems the A7Rii will be a more balanced camera in a smaller form factor when shooting 4k.

Ok, so my adapters arrived in the mail this morning. First thing I noticed was how small they are compared to NEX and eos-m adapters... Obviously due to the flange distance, but that is a major plus for me. I like mirrorless cameras because they're small, but I also have only vintage lenses, so adapters are a must, but the adapter is usually so long that it makes the camera seem that much bigger. On the nx500, the adapters are half the size of the others.
I, pretty much, immediately took a drive out into the Pine Barrens to take some test shots. I brought my Canon FD 17mm and 28mm f2. And my Tokina 17mm and 25-50mm. And a Miranda 28mm f/2.8 macro m42 lens I also got in the mail today.
As soon as I got into the car, I threw the Tokina 17mm on and it looked nice.
When I got out to the Pine Barrens, I was blown away by the iq of the camera and these lenses. Even with everything dialed down the image was so sharp and contrasty, in a good way. I'll have to mess with some of the profiles to try and get the flattest image, but for the first time out, just messing around... I am pleased.
The crop factor is not bad at all and the movie standby mode is smooth, even going out of movie standby mode to use focus magnification and peaking is a breeze.
I did have a card error in my second recording that worried me, it basically would not let me do anything with movie recording, but when took out the card and turned the camera on and off as instructed, it worked fine the rest of the time without any hiccups.
When I got home, I tried converting the footage to prores, it worked fine in editready, but it was slow. About an hour and forty minutes to convert a half hours worth of footage.
When they were converted, they worked fine in QuickTime, but when I imported them into fcpx, I had nothing but a black screen. The inspector recognized them as 4K h.265 clips but not as prores... Not sure why.
Does anyone know the best workflow with these clips? I would rather down sample to 1080p and work in it there, but editready didn't give me an option to downsample, of course I very easily could have missed it.
I will try and upload some of the clips to Vimeo over the weekend.

Someone on another forum (I forget which) says they managed to find the 20mm pancake, 30mm pancake, and 45mm for less than $400 combined. Even as a second system, $750 total for that kit is amazing value for what you get.
