You’ll smile when you read this.
After a brain spasm of a meeting today - the choice has been made and has gone ahead.
It’s the EVA1, GH5S and GH5. The Atomos Sumo will join the EVA1. (@Sage will love this).
We also need to update our gimbal. At the moment it’s a toss up between the Ronin-S and Tilta G2X? Tough.
After all is said and done, I’m going to cry for week as I’ll be living on instant noodles and cheap biscuits for a while! ?

Trying to view all purchases through the lens of a business decision helps to keep mildly in check my wildly out of control G.A.S.

Interesting, I'd never thought of this consequence of press photographers being laid off (replaced by agencies) until you brought it up.

Because you're moving into different areas, or because  you're going into semi-retirement?

    Pros are targeted because:
    1) test bed for high end features which later on trickle down to consumers
    2) margins are higher on pro gear than on consumer gear
3)because they're trophies for brands, which is good marketing to consumers, "use the camera they use at the Olympics"

I lost my mind years ago getting into video. It's a completely insane profession. I can't quite remember why I'm doing it.
I might just get all of them, maybe RED Monstro and a Venice too. ?
Or maybe I'll stick with an iPhone and Osmo Mobile 2.
Ultimately, it's down to image quality.

Haha, don't be, every year is rock bottom and sky high - never in between. Although what i'm about to say might be completely contradictory.....
I'm actually now seriously considering being extra more patient and going for the Kinefinity Mavo as A cam and the BMPCC 4k as B-cam (I have cheeky pre-orders down for both).
    My reason?
I'm positioning my work more higher end than it is now, and emotively, I much much much prefer the images these cameras (will) produce.
Also, now I'm having to re-purpose everything on social, I've found the true power of not making them look like shit online is down-converting from higher resolutions (as a lot of my work is shot higher than 50fps and slowed down). Also having to constantly insanely crop and zoom for picky clients.
So I may just work more jobs, save some more cash, be patient and go for it.

and they need to publish them pretty darn quickly..  this was an interesting video, and I've linked to the time when they mention publishing in under 1 minute from the photo:

Being a professional youtuber is about business, not IQ.
Shooting in 4K costs more to backup, costs more time to edit, costs you out-of-focus shots (the cost in time to re-shoot, the creative cost of the frustration, and sometimes the cost of missing a shot you can't replicate), but most people don't have a 4K display device and those that do probably sit too far away from it to see it, so apart from getting the 'hype' bump of having a 4K logo it is all negatives.
All those costs directly translate to entire videos you could have made instead - if 4K is a 10% cost then potentially you could have made 10% more videos, the percentage is probably more than that.  For people like Casey / Peter / Matti that's quite a lot of views, as well as potentially viral videos.
IQ is important to films where the aesthetic is important, the vlog type of YT videos are basically disposable and are only valuable for their time-sensitive content.  As they say, being second is first-last place, so workflow speed is everything, especially in the tech space.
I think it's both - he cares about content and storytelling.
In terms of the A7III it would be a good technical choice, but I remember Casey saying that he's basically a luddite who only uses tech when he's forced to.  Even his 'Tech Review Tuesday" videos are almost completely devoid of technical content - they're all about user experience.
As above, learning something new has an opportunity cost of a number of videos.

Yup, that seems to be the case. This ridiculousness started when Matti and Peter McKinnon started telling people the 1DXmkII and 6DmkII should be your top pick. Casey and Jon Olsson for example then started using Canons again. It's like a pyramid scheme where Canon incentivizes people to recommend their shit or something. And it seems to be working, people are following blindly.

    Lies.
    Damned lies.
    And statistics.

Interesting they use NPD Group info for all the "we're #1 in the last 6 months" but for the claim of #1 in mirrorless over the last 6 years is " Source: Sony internal historical data sources." Form reading that goofy press release, sounds like the "source" is Sony Alpha Rumors.
This announcement reeks of desperation, the a7III and the largely ignored Pentax K1.2 are the only FF bodies released in the last 6 months. They have a new camera, they should be #1. Its no coincidence Nikon's Z6/Z7 announcement is a week away.
Perhaps we'll get a follow up announcing they've maintained a dominant position with most FF cameras shipped between now and when the Nikon starts shipping or something equally silly like most FF mirrorless lenses sold in the last 4 years.
    Chris
p.s. I'm keeping an eye on used gear boards after the Nikon is announced, I'm betting there will be some good deals from Nikon shooters that are shooting Sony as a 2nd system or just dipping a toe in mirrorless. Hot new camera means good deals!

Isn't that the case with every camera ever made? I can't imagine anyone on this forum expects perfection from anything they buy, especially not if they read the forum posts here and elsewhere. I can't think of a single piece of gear I own that I don't have something I wish was better or different on.

That is exactly what I showed in the video! Except the tricky nature of selfie filming on the fly means I didn't quite show it exactly as I should have.

That first cart I showed is suitable for a high end pro.

The second one is still ok, just would help if the cart and the boxes both matched (perhaps if both get spay painted black, rather than being two different colors).

Certainly having any sort of dedicated sound cart which is well equipment then will set you apart from low budget bag guys.

I'd dispute that you'd think this makes me look "non-pro", likely you just don't have the recent experience on film sets of this scale with sound departments.

But this is not about "appearances" anyway (but would be a bonus?), rather that a well equipped cart will actually allow me to do my job better together with a boom op.

The same reason you see big 32" director's monitors set up.
    Or DIT carts.
    Or AC follow carts.
Or any of the many other departments' dedicated infrastructure they bring with them.

It helps them do their jobs better.

Its predominantly jpeg usage in sport because of the buffer depth and clearing and to keep the overall pipeline speed up.
Network transfer off the camera to the edit computer and then onward transmission to agency servers through the internet are a bigger bottleneck than the processing inside the editing app (which will primarily be cropping rather than image manipulation) so raw even off 20-24mp cameras like D5 etc is too slow.
I do sometimes use a D800/D810 alongside my 'real' sports cameras for some jobs and you can feel the workflow slow down even with jpegs.
That will change over time with faster network transmission but for now thats the reality of it if you're shooting for live editorial.
The point about whether someone not buying 256 or 512gb cards is 'frankly not being a pro' is a moot one though as the images aren't actually on the cards long enough to warrant needing that size of storage.

Downside of the C200B is that you lose the touch to focus (and if DPAF is important then the area selection should be too). Plus if you are using an external recorder as you've mentioned, you can't really have the display info on it, such as exposure settings etc on your clean feed external recorder. Honestly think the savings are so not worth it (unless you really want to use it remotely anyway).

FYI, There's a bluetooth app to control the camera, but no liveview or focusing options.

They are open to people developing their own apps though, so maybe that's something we'll see in the future ( @BTM_Pix ?)
