    Telephoto compression plays a major part, longer FL means less perspective.

    'Equivalent focal length' seems to forget this.

    A zoom and dolly shot popular in movies of the 80s, keeping the same framing, illustrates this perfectly

    I would start calculating from a different point but the end results are the same:

    target aspect / squeeze x vertical resolution = horizontal resolution

    2.35 / 1.5 x  1080 = 1692  (1692x1080)

    2.35 / 1.5 x 720 = 1128     (1128x720)

    2.39 / 1.5 x 1080 = 1720.8 (1720x1080)

    2.39 / 1.5 x 720 = 1147.2 (1148x720)

    This way you have the least amount of rounding errors.

    hello everyone thanks! i think im going for the UK lensdoctor conversion,
    the edmika is cheaper and looks good but the actual DIY does not look easy, especially the part where you need to pull out the glass on the back with pliers, without scratching it, and there is some danger of locking up the aperture ring, and then having to dig deep.

    nevertheless Ed mika  has some really nice solutions for people that are handy and confident to open up their lens.As far as i get he is sorting out a new conversion soon.

    this lens is worth the trouble!

    As far as I know these EdMika mounts are reversible conversions. You don't ruin your lens, you can always install the original back part of the lens, the FD mount. There are tutorial videos on youtube about it. You just have to unscrew 3-4 screws, remove the FD mount, install the EF mount, reinsert the screws.

    Nice post.

    On top of this, when everyone has changed to 4K camera's, more things will change. Our clients will 'demand' 4K. 'Why can't you shoot my wedding in 4K? My uncle has a smartphone which shoots 4K!'
    It's the new 'Megapixel' for people without technical understanding.

    That means that we, as film makers, have to upgrade to not only 4K camera's, but also to 4K monitors, editing hardware and software, and the like.

    At the same time, Hollywood keeps pumping out glorious images which have been shot at the 2K-Alexa. And I have never, ever heard someone say 'Nice movie, but wasn't sharp enough' after watching Alexa footage on an 40m wide cinema screen.

    For me, I wish they would focus on good 1080p.

    I would want good 1080p first, like blackmagic prores 1080p and such for very low price. I think most of the first 4K consumer cameras will have some bullshit codec with low color depth, low bitrate and sharpening pushed to the max.

    Never breathe onto your sensor and don't use cotton buds or micro fibre cloths or whatever...

    It's the most delicate part of the whole camera. A pack of sensor swabs isn't even expensive... why bother trying to DIY with household materials???

    V * AR * 1/SQ

    V= Vertical Resolution
    AR = Aspect Ratio (flat)
    SQ = Squeeze Factor

    So, for instance, if your target was 1080 lines of vertical resolution you would multiply that by 2.35 to get 2538.  That would be your target, flat, widescreen image (2538x1080).  To get to the squeezed horizontal resolution you multiply this by the reciprocal of the anamorphic lens compression ratio, 1/1.5 (use full precision on calculator) so that's 1692.

    1692 x 1080

    Knowing this squeezed aspect ratio makes it theoretically easier to arrive at a shorter calculation but you'll find that the mix of single, double and greater decimal precision at different steps can alter the result by several pixels, introducing quite a bit of slop.

    For instance, the above resolution works forward and backward through the original calculation, proving it's correct.  That's not the case, however, if you were to use the aspect ratio of the frame we know to be correct.  If you were to use the aspect ratio of the squeezed frame and the common accuracy of only two digits of floating point precision you would get the following:

    1692 / 1080 = 1.57

    ...a 1.57:1 aspect ratio for the squeezed frame.  But that aspect ratio does not give you correct results, even for our starter 1080 lines of vertical resolution example:

    1080 * 1.57 = 1696    ...and...   1696 * 1.5 = 2544   ...but...  2544 / 1080 = 2.36

    Not a huge deal but it's something to be aware of, particularly if you're doing something for a client or for eventual DCP or any other application where "close enough" isn't good enough.

    When you really want to know use as much real information as you can like actual pixels, known compression ratios, aperture measurements, etc. and stay away from aspect ratio and crop factor short hand.

    What are you using for a taking lens? I believe that it is common to see this distortion when using wide angle lenses with anamorphics I have seen it on a couple my self with my Helios 44 on panning shots.

    I serviced a few different anamorphics and I can tell you that the slightest misalignment in the anamorphic elements will result in a blurry image, especially wide open. If the image is sharp then there is probably nothing wrong with the lens.

    The squeeze varies yes, usually it gets lower at closer distances (for example 2x at infinity and ~1.66x at 1.5m for my Sun). You can use diopters for close up shots, you can have your gear focused at infinity, this way your squeeze factor remains 2x.

    Gábor Ember got a reaction from Matthias MalleÅ¡iÄ in Sun Anamorphic & Helios-44M rehousing idea
    OK new stuff. I need to design two sockets for the front and back glass block of the SUN. The original housing for the front glass does not enable proper alignment, it loosens the whole group which can rotate even from cleaning with a cloth. I need to create a tube that holds the glass in position with probably O-rings and a threaded ring that tightens, fixes the glass in place. Now this tube has to be aligned (only once). I am now at 10 parts for the design. It is way more than what I first wanted but they are much more simple.

    I really need to post some pics of what I am talking about...

    Edit.: Since I will place the SUN back glass really close to the helios I may be able to eliminate vignetting.

    Can anyone suggest a light helical grease? I will need to grease the parts but I don't want to make the focusing really heavy.
