This didn't happen just now either. Older cameras like the GH4 / 5Dmk3 / D750 / etc have all been very good.

Heck even the old Panasonic GH2/GH1 are perfectly respectably good if you work to its capabailities!

    As the Zacuto Shootout showed.
    https://www.zacuto.com/revenge-of-the-great-camera-shootout-2012

Or the various films done with the Panasonic GH2:

If you look broader than "hybrids" and say "sub $1K" then has been more than true since at least the BMPCC. (or "sub $3K", which is a common enough price for many DSLRs, then the original BMCC in 2012)

Being spoiled for choice in 2018 with all our luxuries we can choose from the many amazing cameras which got released this year, doesn't change the broader fact we've had "good enough" for a long time now!

I have heard Alienware is not what it was value wise years ago. Not sure what to tell you what to buy. Dell has always been good stuff. No doubt a Desktop Box is way cheaper than any Laptop that might edit 4K. I would just get up on the web and see if you can find some good comparisons. 3000 bucks ought to get the job done on a Box. The big money might be in buying a decent 4K, 5K monitor that can do HDR 2020. That is going to be the future, and it is here now. HDR is the future like it or not, a heck of a lot more than 8K is ever going to be for years to come.
Heck even a few Phones do true HDR now, and a lot of them can view it on the display. A lot of videos are going to look pretty weak not using HDR when it gets damn popular. My son and I were in Best Buy a few months ago and particularly Sony TV's that had HDR were a True standout compared to those that didn't have it. You could spot them half way across the store. They are that good.

The GH5 is one of those cameras where far more people own one (or more) than are visible from forum posts and YT reviews etc.  They are workhorses.  Even if no more MFT cameras or lenses are released ever again there will still be many thousands of users making millions of videos per year for the next 5+ years.  4K 10-bit isn't going anywhere soon.  There are major networks in the US who still shoot 1080 and broadcast 720, and people watch YT on their phones.
My recommendation is to work out exactly what features you require in a camera system, to review your options and then go buy what you need.  If you aren't sure about a GH5 vs something newer then that means the GH5 already meets your requirements and so you're just tempted by shiny toys of new cameras.
At the end of the day, a camera is a tool to make stuff.  Either buy a GH5 and stop worrying about what's around the corner and go make stuff, or keep what you have and stop worrying about what's around the corner and go make stuff.  If you're worried about the resale value of the camera then maybe stick with the camera you already own and go buy stocks instead - tech is the worst investment possible

I kind of don't know what to think about Casey Faris.  On one hand he uses the simple controls like the pros tend to, he seems to be able to do difficult things pretty quickly and efficiently (like matching cameras), and in comparison to most other YT grading people who sell LUT packs he looks level-headed and like he knows what he's doing.  There's a YT colourist who bragged in one of their videos that they don't plan their grading videos, they just hit record and then make up the grade as they go along.
However, if you compare him to Juan Melara then there's an enormous gap between Juan and every other YT colourist I'm aware of.  Juan doesn't even seem to use Resolve in the same way that everyone else does - it's kind of like he's from another planet.  His videos are absolute tours of force, and it's obvious that he has enormous depth of technical knowledge about colour spaces, colour conversion theory, etc.
These are good examples of the level of knowledge that Juan has:
Whenever Juans videos are discussed on the LGG forums the pros there admire him but aren't amazed, so from their reaction I have concluded that Juan is very knowledgable but not beyond the norm for professional colourists.
I think film-making on YT is kind of becoming it's own universe and people like Casey stand out.  However in the traditional world of film-making there are colourists who are part of professional guilds, work as part of the feature film industry, go to industry conferences, and some of them teach - either in person or behind paywalls and we've never even heard of them.  The YT world and that professional world don't really have much contact with each other, so if it wasn't for people like Juan Melara we almost wouldn't know that there are people who put the rest of us to shame.
In a sense, Casey is doing just fine, and if he can make footage look good and match different cameras together then that's all that's needed.  There's no right or wrong way to do art, after all.  However, once you become aware of the skill level that is out there in the industry then it's a bit hard to look at the YT colourists who sell LUTs and wonder if they're professional colourists or if they're really just LUT salespeople who only need to know enough more than their customers to appear knowledgeable enough to make good LUTs.
When there are people like Juan who know so much more than the colourists who take log / non-rec709 footage and just adjust it with the LGG wheels or contrast controls it makes you wonder what else they're telling you that's flat our wrong, let alone just unhelpful advice.  I watched many hours of YT colourists to get familiar with Resolve, and after studying Juans videos and reading lots of LGG threads, I realised that much of the techniques I'd learned from YT were just bad advice, and I needed to unlearn them and learn good replacement techniques.

If you put a 60fps clip on a 24fps timeline and set it to 40% speed it will play it back at 24p, using all the frames in the original clip. The fps in the dialogue box is wrong.
If you leave the clip attributes as default and change the speed on the timeline you can have the same clip appear multiple times on the timeline at different speeds.

I took closer look at this.
Dropbox does not re-encode your videos. So you get whatever quality you want, BUT, you have maximum bandwidth of 20 GB free and 200 GB paid, per day, for entire account.
Elite Player method for streaming Gdrive videos is bad. Can't do large files and your videos stop streaming arbitrarily due to exceeding an unknown amount of bandwidth. You'll be seeing a lot of this... (edit: actually you won't, the videos will simply not stream.)

My main issue with using Dropbox is that the quality is horrible when you watch it directly through a shared link. Everyone can download the original file, but when most viewers end up just watching the preview, that's a real drawback. If anyone knows a way to enable high-quality previews or embedded video from Dropbox, that would be appreciated.

    Hi Andrew.
I had the exact same issue with Vimeo this month. A BS DMCA claim and Vimeo is not answering my counter request. Even youtube which is free finally removed one of the DMCA take down after I send a counter request.
This DMCA thing is such a BS, anybody can throw that at you. They hit first and never double check anything.

    I'm going to check Wistia.

Due to a couple of old DMCA claims against my Vimeo account from 2016 and older, they are terminating my account if another one is made. As these are quite common and often made in error, I no longer consider Vimeo a secure place for my channel and EOSHD embeds.
I am looking for alternative pay-monthly video hosting sites to replace Vimeo.
Must have no ads obviously! Support for smooth 4K playback and original file downloads. Any suggestions?
Is there a way to pay for a YouTube account upgrade for my videos on there, so that the user experience is better for viewers regardless of what YouTube account they have? No ads is a must.

It will find it even if set to private. For most music it will just turn off monitisation and the video can remain up with no problems. If you have music from Sony, like their premium music that shipped with Vegas then some spammers will claim it as their own. A simple dispute in that case wins every time for me.

Buh bye! Tomorrow I will start to pull all my videos from Vimeo and transfer them to another platform.
That's not because playback performance remains a problem after half a decade.
It's because Vimeo cannot even assure the safety of my account any more.
It could be deleted at any moment.

It's a Tax write off. 2 cameras will cover it. When you are Incorporated you can take a 3 year Rapid Deprecation and write the whole thing off. I have had two businesses Incorporated. Easy Peezy. Same with the Rental properity's I owned. You can write them off quick. Countries give Company's, Corporations every chance there is to succeed. It is what drives the economy and creates jobs.

It’s a law of nature of marketing a new product: the less quality you are offering the more noise you have to make. It’s as simple as this.
The Pharmaceutical Industrie is the best proof for this law. New drugs, being as ineffective as the previous generation, have to pushed hard,
e.g. on one week events for the  so called oppinion leaders in the Carribean, Hawaii and locations like this, of course with spouses.
An invitation to Hawaii for the so called "camera journalists" (unfortunately only 2 days, no spouses) tells me that the new product is not worth considering at all.

Knowing how quickly BM release updates and how much effort they're putting into development, I wouldn't be surprised if the Windows version of Resolve gets a big performance bump at some point soon.  The performance differences in that video can't be explained by the hardware differences so I think they must be software optimisations.
If the OP has a preference for PC then I wouldn't use those test results to recommend a complete change in computer platform.
@mojo43 sorry to hear about your laptop getting taken!  I keep my carry-on under the seat in front of me but I have a soft backpack and I guess if yours is har-shelled or too big it might not work.

I don't have a DeckLink card for the Grading Monitor yet, but will certainly get one soon. Screenshot attached of 4k + 1080 monitors for User Interface. All UI screens should run off the one graphics card.
For GPU I meant memory as big as possible on it, not the card. Although having said that the 1070Ti and 1080 seem to only be $80 difference here in NZ atm so 1080 I guess. Bound to be new cards just about to come out.

I have Intel i7-8700K (6/12 core), 32GB, 64bit Win 10 Pro, 6GB 780GTX and it is fantastic. So fast it is ridiculous. Acceleration is in the paid version.
Currently I run a 4k 27" as main monitor off that video card and I have a 1080 screen running off the onboard video. Spyder5 colour dongle thing.
I have the waveforms up on the 1080 screen. It does not span screens like Premiere, there is a little extra video card one can get from BlackMagic to enable an extra monitor screen for monitoring the programme full screen.
Resolve is super stable, unlike Premiere. It includes default functions that seem identical to expensive plugins: Neat Video noise reduction, Mercalli stabilisation, Flicker Free. My recent try at running Premiere on brand new machines resulted in them crashing every 5 minutes or less. It is horrible.
edit: go single gpu and as high memory as you can go on it. 8 or 11 seems the thing now. There is a small gain if doing 8k footage on dual GPU otherwise it actually slows things down just a little from single.
