  1. Me too @kye... And @eatstoomuchjam BTW, I meant 12K.

There's no room for further updates, the only choice there it is not fail on the chosen configuration to buy. No room for 2nd chance once purchased.

Yes, Q0 will demand for more resources but also 12K @ 75 fps going with Ursa Mini Pro 12K 2.4:1 as for instance...

I wonder when the things will become choppy versus the use from internal SSD.

    If not, upgrade.

Is it possible on most recent Mac with unified memory?

Any modern high-performance external SSD (whether USB 3.x or Thunderbolt) is going to be fast enough for the vast majority of people.

Even dealing with high resolution video files?

I'm really talking about advanced stuff in my previous posts, and doing tricky work-arounds for things.  If you simply buy a big enough SSD to hold the operating system and software in the first place then you should be fine.

A good way to estimate that is to look at the total space you've used on the drive, and then take away the size of any folders that have your own files in them (documents, music, etc) and then you'll know how much space everything else is taking up.  If you're upgrading and going to be using the same software then this should be a good guide for how much space you'll need.  Software installations get larger over time of course, so build in some allowances for that, but otherwise you probably don't ever need to think about it.

Probably the only things that might enter the equation is if you install some software and it decides to install a bunch of sample media libraries, or something like Resolve will render proxy files etc.  For these things you hope that the software will give you the option to specify where to put all those files, but that's not really an Operating System thing, that's a software thing from Adobe or whoever.

It is Resolve but the idea is to guarantee the minimum configuration savings for internal SSD.

And taking advantage of the Thunderbolt port(s) to connect the external SSD storage in order to have access to high resolution video files from there where Resolve will operate.

It depends on what you want to do with it.

For most people it's great.  On my MBP the external SSD tests as fast as the internal one (2500MB/s read and write), and that's over USB, not even thunderbolt.

The only challenge comes when you run out of space on the internal one and have already moved all your files onto external drives, just because various software likes to keep things in directories that you often don't get to choose, for example if you install games through something like Steam then I think they want to be on the local drive.

No games nor leisure stuff, only work related which translates to software and those files you mention in such directories. Not easy to mantain the system much clean to avoid those issues without many skills on computing and alike? I mean because I am not Apple user yet despite a couple of equipment around for home use, but as far as I could understand, the idea is they offer understanding of its maintenance under the regular user viewpoint or am I wrong on this one?

People definitely use external SSDs to augment their internal storage, but there are limitations to that kind of thing.

I'm afraid so, hence my question... I wonder not only because their expensive SSD storage but what else is left other than external storage route via thunderbolt?

  6. No worries Andrew, c'mon I know but I appreciate your care. You know, I have to let it clear.

Seems we cannot make a long story short now from that information you've just posted, I see now even longer than I thought... ; ) I hadn't read it yet. Really. No problem, I understand your editorial standpoint : ) And it's fairly expectable when pops up certain crappy attempts to flood it with spam over our heads.

Here is an example you now point out. I hadn't seen yet that post by that "Herrham" making a racist joke addressed to some man/target based on such biblical name connected with a "very dumb horse"... : P Impressive. Very creative. When arguments lack. A charm. Had you/we ever noticed any post coming from same source before? Of course not! Or maybe the OP right there in that thread?! haha

    image.thumb.png.119f795e4fdc3490b81e63c9e36794bd.png

It is a single post and straight addressed to me... WOW What an honour! LOL

It's not hard to make the connection with my entries there along in that exact thread, where anyone can easily clear up what side I am and why certain obscure poster who decided to join on November 28 and took a precious time to write a lame single ad hominem attack against this humble scribe here of yours... Sounds easy when there's no ban hammer back. On November 28, same date, last visited : X

Yes, it is suspicious but to each their own. Seems someone I somehow may have hurt with my opinion and input wanted to drive me silent. End of story.

So, the same concern you have I share it with you. Of course, we may choose different camera topics to talk about. Also because we have different needs, obvious actual separate routes of life, professional ones of our own, of course, your focus can be another one and mine a distinct one.

I think we usually tend to pay attention to what fits our current scope. If we want to look for a certain type of gear, we are not focused on something which can constitute the main subject of your editorial line. And I certainly respect this. I cannot guess before you say it. Once alerted I can only show to you my cooperation and clarification. It's not an essay, Andrew, even though every single individual has a style of his/her own. I figure out you want to express your care that I may not feel it personally. I don't. That's all OK! As written and very sincerely, I follow your concern and you can check I even ended attacked when doing the same to address such identical concern of yours.

That said and now as part of your audience and fellow user who appreciates to be here with you and share your passion, I'd truly love you could not leave out of your radar such lovely promise Ace Pro and Back-Bone releases look like to be. No less for GoPro releases each year. Let's not confound it with crappy copycats, these manufacturers don't deserve their treatment IMO, far to be. Take a look on your diligence about shooting raw video on a mobile phone... to only mention this typical case of your enthusiasm we cannot particularly or evidently demand but hope for. As someone who also wrote there and a couple of us concurred immediately after, if not other, for fun -- isn't it the first reason why we are here, after all? Yes, not all oh yeah, but I am glad I still know who and where I am ; )

    :- )

  7. Of course Andrew, I even share your concern when people start to misplace concepts and praise some oddities like a new future for coming!... LOL : )

Even though, I don't think these small devices have no necessarily to be connected with killing anything or everything we've known so far.

I've also been pretty straightforward, no doubts, about it -- with a few posts there along that whole thread, not viable to leave here (several) links to, for clear grounds, it's just going there and read it : )

However, seems people tend to see it as two separate worlds when they are not and don't need to be. I mean on features, not film language!

Media convergence has brought room for a wider spectrum of applications.

Cinema has changed but this doesn't mean to end dead as looks like a macabre celebration at a certain point and also pointed out by a good fellow of ours for the subject matter.

The democratization of this medium has favoured such circumstances. The innovation on those small devices no less.

I don't see them as a threat. Trying to adapt their introductions on low light performance and stabilization resources to name a couple of them as a positive contribution and not the contrary.

Language will never be suppressed for technology adoption because it is beyond that. As actually written in that recent thread about the 24p topic.

My enthusiasm for new releases such as Ace Pro offering 8K 24p for so less bucks is nothing I take it as HFR (let alone 8K! : P) becoming the norm and replacement for the cinema look... : D It sounds even amusing when people think this will happen as inevitable.

On YT, unfortunately, pictures live nowadays released there, for everything and camera industry follows the trend. We all know written press has experienced a blow. Sometimes it is easier to post the thumbnail and live with that OP has already published on YT rather than somehow add a hidden link I guess people will end too lazy to even click it. We live in the planet where rules the law of the minor effort today. It is what it is.

To communicate whatever we intend to is the key then.

But, I will obviously consider your request as webmaster and salute you may add your concern over here. Nothing beats an open discussion and I believe this is what the forums are made for. You've made it or we wouldn't have the chance to be and share our thoughts here as happens.

It doesn't surprise me at all when we repeatedly see posts going on a different direction of your editorial choices.

Fortunately, this place exists or we'd be flooded by many spam entries. The open gate every time we land on YT, isn't it? ; )

Sometimes a way to have the possibility to discuss with people we share a few or more angles on it as that infamous thread around 24p as effectively shown. Maybe not the original intention of the OP but it's not hard to realize that from an attentive reading of the posts published and the discussion followed there. EOSHD (.com forum), your boards, are the only location where this is possible, where else...?

So, not much different for the small form factor devices aka "action cams". Don't think I also haven't noticed these same voices on those action cam threads (only one or a couple of those : D opened by me!) reverencing the smooth HFR... * cough cough * So, did I feed "the monster"? My bad, I apologise for the inconvenience. Seems the creation has surpassed the creator... LMAO Hey, I am not the only one... We live in a polytheism right in that front row! : D

Someone could say why not there on YT? With whom there, I'd incline to ask. Got the feeling? :- )

In a very particular note now, the one to roll my eyes is not the multitude of videos more or less all showing the same. Play ostrich won't solve the things. It is the spam of ideas what is something more noticeable of the times we have arrived from this digital age where we have ended. I don't also think to praise old school as mantra may help if not having an eye on both sides of the equation.

The recent drone remark that I'd get one as only camera to have because it is the only to fly... LOL : D it is surely a joke... Without mention how useful they are as tools for leveling up (y)our production values these days to those who struggle in the field. Or I wouldn't have ended to refer a cinema camera such as the Ursa Mini Pro (12K) I've recently added to my arsenal and I'd actually like to see more people here to show some attention to : )

Mirrorless world is fancy and alike but as user with countless units so far from many brand suppliers (I am not used to sell the mirrorless ones since the first GH1s, just the only couple of action cam units I bought in all my entire life once not happy with yet, what else can I put my focus on as crash/B/C cam?), I've arrived to the conclusion we cannot be closed on that form factor albeit an enthusiastic adopter since day one, one of the reasons as I've landed here. Or we tend to see mere marginal improvements from each most recent release. Let alone the overheating yadda yadda every time the usual suspects launch a "new" version of the same BTW.

Hence my enthusiasm on something coming to really make the difference. It's not at the level of the film language for sure! :- ) But flexibility on tools at one's/our disposal. The many, the more defiant self-reliance of a filmmaker is (EAG :- )

Since we started using SSDs the RAM limitations were much less impactful, but WOW does OSX fall apart if you run out of SSD space!  It becomes a struggle to even use the computer to delete some files and recover, things just unravel..

On that SSD comment, I hope that thunderbolt port may let people go on cheap as far as internal SSD concerns RAM aspect aside... Am I right?

  9. You rock @kye You're the kind of technical expertise skilled individual at professional level no matter how amateur sometimes you claim to be LOL : P every film producer would like to have nearby! : ) When/if you'll decide to come closer, let people here know! ;- )

I have a few back-bone modded cameras.  Usability tends to be a bit of a challenge.  When they say they have the best luck with HDMI, I believe them completely.  The cameras that I have are...
Yi 4K+ - borderline unusable.  No HDMI output, fairly high latency over wifi, minimal or no ability to punch in on internal screen.  Can be OK if you can lock focus in a spot and leave it there (like for mounting on a car).  C/CS mount w/ 1/2.3" sensor.
Hero 7 - More usable than Yi, still really hard to use.  HDMI output has insane lag.  Wifi tolerable, can punch in on internal screen in photo mode (and maybe in a limited fashion in video?  It's been a bit).  C/CS mount w/ 1/2.3" sensor
Insta360 One R 1" edition - My "gold standard" - No HDMI output available, wifi lag acceptable, double tap on internal screen to punch in makes it the easiest of the bunch to focus.  Passive Micro 4/3 mount w/ 1" sensor.

I wish the One R could do wired preview to an iPhone, but at least mine only seems to have an option for wired Android connection (maybe the One RS body improves that?  I should double-check whether I have one).  If it could do wired preview with low latency, it would be completely usable (though with poor dynamic range).

Anyway, I keep an EF adapter on my One R and occasionally mount it to the back of a telephoto lens to turn it into a super telephoto (5.7k 1" sensor + EF 100-400L = 1080mm lens - add 1.4x teleconverter for 1500mm - with some ability to crop in since the source image is already 5.7k).

So the best answers for "why do this?"
    1) 1/2.3" sensor works with tiny C mount (and even some D mount) lenses.  "That bulk and weight" is less than just about any S35 camera.
    2) 1" sensor = 2.7x crop vs FF, give or take - 1/2.3" sensor = 5.6x crop factor vs FF.  Want a thing that's about 1/3 the size of your other camera body and you can easily mount it to your long telephoto lens to get some extra reach?
    3) It's fun.

All things considered, if the RX0 has a low-latency HDMI output, it might actually be the best option (still) for a Back-Bone camera - it has a "big" sensor and one can use focus tools on the external screen.

Yes, I am based on similar input coming from acceptable lag on Insta360 products from their users I am also one of them, hence why I might end and actually am all enthusiastic with : ) The fact they've succeeded to launch to each most recent GoPro models seems to hint they're coming to improve their offer as far as that issue concerns. Reason why such reports like yours are priceless to go forward ; ) I can only be optimistic! :- )

  11. It's not a bad thread though : ) I think it has ended more a promotion of 24p as preferred frame rate delivery than its opposite! LOL : ) Looking it from both perspectives and each arguments seems 24p is well alive! ; ) Not that we had the need for such discussion but they came so powerful on bright and nonsensical sides respectively I believe we are still more comfortable on the natural side of the thongs... oops, things! : D

if you were a red user at that time, you are pretty good. and thanks for the help you give. actually i just rambled out something i see will happen in the future. it is extremely normal that people have different thoughts about this. i don't anticipate others agree with me. i just see a thing and say here. but it very possibly may be true. because i found myself pretty good at prediction. but you may well be thinking i am bragging. that is fine. i may have more questions to ask you in the future. let us keep good online relationship. don't argue with something not important.

On the contrary, it is rather important what dreams are made of ; )

In any case, prediction is hardly to end pretty accurate 100% even when we think digital ended with film, looks like to see many zombies out there : D or Kodak wouldn't launch a Super 8 camera for $5000 or do you think they would?

  13. 9 minutes ago, zlfan said:

actually i think nowadays people favoring s16 or s35 film is hype. digital cinema is very mature by now.  in the new era of digital cinema and new distribution platform, many old rules don't hold. but prediction needs time to confirm, by then maybe this forum is gone already. so predictors always are under pressure. no big deal though. it is just a forum. lol.

The same way TV didn't kill radio, the screen didn't extinguish the stage ; ) Or vice versa?? : D Does it matter what comes next? Really? ;- ) LOL

sometimes people are talented on something. you cannot tell.

in 2008, when i predicted that 5d2 was going to kill ex1/ex3 and 2/3 pro eng cams, someone raised the same question, what credential do you have to make sure this prediction is right. It just came out correct 10 years later, and he never admitted his previous stance and suspicion and arrogance later when i see him.

If you go on reduser you'll have the chance to find posts of mine about RED itself in the same period about the same 5D2 equation ; )

It's not about crystall ball we are here now nor such recent past but hundreds of years of art history and psychology (perception) only to name a few ;- )

One hundred years and a quarter of history of this medium can also help because there are a lot of examples but takes time to watch them all! : D

man is what he eats. habits shape the personality.

Democracy means responsibility to open the mouth about something we had studied at least a bit to begin with. No need to go to school but requires hard work. Hype is not enough. This doesn't bring good habits or enough to classify anything.

  16. I guess absolute freedom of speech... : ) I think Marty aka @PannySVHS is more focused towards credentials on this one 'cause a certain level of democracy typifies to weigh variables for making it fair and balanced. Ignorance cannot equal its opposite. It's all about that IMHO (EAG :- )

  17. I just see some statements like they come from a certain grade of expertise when they don't : ) Without mention to put Peter Jackson, only to name one case, as he could be an authority on film aesthetics... *Phew* C'mon, this sounds a bit pathetic to not write plenty enough.

  18. But if I would have only to buy one and carry with me? DJI Mini 4 Pro because flies too! LOL : )

On the ground to have with me all around? Osmo Pocket 3 or the new Ace Pro has also impressed me. Its 8K 24p looks like a winner there.

A camera unfortunately or not is the one we can use.

Going to a set? Ursa Mini Pro 12K, for some reason I've just purchased it :- )

I concur, Z8 (Z9 is a complete different camera despite to be a sister/brother) is the one to me right now, maybe, and I don't even have one... : D That infamous overheating aura scares me a hell of a bit!

It’s my view that 24 FPS is the goldilocks temporal resolution for listening to a story.

Realism?? Give me a break. What’s realistic about a Death Star?

Human beings are story tellers.  Religion is stories. Sitting around a fire telling stories, making sense of the world is what we do that makes us human.

    Representation.  Not realism.

Right. But realism is not absence of representation.

The problem here is people come to discuss things they don't have clue about : )

With the due respect, it's not because someone is a skilled film professional in one or another technical aspect of this craft, I will discuss film aesthetics from some other departments of this same craft with.

To each their own. And opinion doesn't convert a fact either.
