Sony a7 V announced - $3000 is now entry level

My guess is they have a lot of those sensors they need to offload and this is one way of doing it. -
Amazing feature-film Magellan is shot on the Panasonic GH7
Clark Nikolai replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
It once was that the pros had 16mm an 35mm film and the "amateurs" had Super 8 and videotape. Now that's all changed. Yesterday I was capturing some old videotapes from a friend's project that we did in 2011 on a Canon HV20. It looked amazing. I was expecting it to look worse than cameras of today but it doesn't. Just shows that even a camera from then, with a CMOS chip from that era, MPEG 2 encoding, 4:2:0 chroma subsampling, 1440 x 1080 frame size recorded of the wide screen image, and 8 bit colour, it still can look amazing. It just shows that cameras have been very good for a long time now. The differences are mostly ergonomics and physical size. When deciding on a camera, you have to consider what you want to spend months living with. -

I wonder when the first comparison video's will turn up. Would love to see some side by sides. Not sure why there are 30 video reviews out there from people just talking about the camera without comparing it to other camera's. Specs on paper is one thing. but I want see comparision against other camera's (IQ, (crop or no crop), AF, stabilisation,...) Still think the nikon zr got the rest beat IQ wise. But would love to see it perform against the R6III, nikon zr and the panasonic s1II.

Somehow strange that they did not put this technology in the FX2. I assume the development on the photo side is stronger. For the videoside it just reduces some of the A74 biggest flaws. The Crop on 60p has cost me some nice shots, i find the rolling shutter not too problematic even though i hate the effct- haven't shot for the big screen though. Will be super interesting to see a comparison of the picture of the A74 to the A75 -again skintones is what i am most interested in...

Don't all sony cameras do this?

Thats scary response. But I hope its due to another half baked firmware, like the one they released for A7IV.

It wouldn't shock me. Those cheap Chinese brands like Viltrox that are putting out very good quality AF lenses for a fraction of what Sony sells their lenses for have to be hurting. When the E-mount was new and competing against DSLR and even M43, it needed all the help it could to expand how many lenses it had. Now, not so much. The L-Mount Alliance makes more sense for Leica, Lumix, and Sigma now, because while the alliance has grown to include some of those Chinese companies that have flooded e-mount, there hasn't been that free for all for L-Mount, presumably because of the agreements? -
Apparently, the A7V AF is struggling with 3rd party lenses. When Sony was asked about the issue, their response as “We do no guarantee compatibility”. Maybe Sony has dumbed down the AF for the 3rd party lenses. Something to watch.

How is Sony's IBIS still so bad? How is it still missing features that the S5II X had 2 1/2 years ago? Even Canon has caught up. I get it's a hybrid, but this is stuff that social media professionals need/use. -

It's not going to be groundbreaking as the standard model, leave that for the a1 II and a9 III which are indeed ground-breaking, especially that world first on a full frame global shutter sensor in a mirrorless camera. The big appeal of the a7 V for me is: Only E-mount and Z has the wonderful Techart Leica M autofocus adapter, which means ALL of my best lenses can now be used with back-button AF for stills. When I go back to a Panasonic or L-mount camera, I have to focus it all manually, such a drag after you have experienced the other way. Then there is the GFX 100, which is now my main system. You are happy to put vintage full frame glass on it, because it changes the look in a very nice way. It makes a full frame camera look like a crop. Darker, softer corners are the trade off - usually, I don't mind it. So if I am to pick up a full frame camera it has to compliment the GFX 100, do things that can't - like the Techart adapter, an eco-system with the most adapters, the outright best mount, great AF, great ergonomics and colour (Sony have improved a lot in these areas), and Sony has a lead in terms of their outright best full frame cameras. Which means, should the a7 V borrow from the a1 II, it ends up rather good - which it is. Whereas, Panasonic's latest $3k cameras tend to borrow from the S5 II, rather than a higher-end $6k Panasonic, which doesn't exist (yet) and no S1H II either. So Sony is attractive for a lot of shooters... And over Canon RF mount, E mount takes the win by far in terms of the available glass, adapters and pricing thereof. -

It's repacked and rearranged sensor data, and it has heavy compression which changes the texture of detail in the shadows, and the noise pattern of the sensor. Have a look at the word raw and what it means. Raw means unaltered, unfiltered, unprocessed raw sensor bayer RGB data. You only have that with uncompressed Cinema DNG on the Sigma Fp cameras. And other fake raw codecs like BRAW are a hybrid codec, it is partially debayered-in camera. -

Meanwhile Sony dropped the price of FX2 in China and now its only $2350. A7V is $2550.

First time I see the reference to Fake RAw!!! Since when does the ZR has fake raw, in fact it is as RAW as it can be with zero noise reduction etc. I know the ZR does have its quirks, as lacking some good exposure tool for now in software and micro hdmi in hardware. But the RAW and image quality is their.

Seems pretty boring, in both a good and a bad way. Kind of expensive, which is normal these days, but otherwise, a solid upgrade to the A7 line. I assume Sony is withholding open gate, 7k, and 32 bit audio for their video line, which is fine. 32 bit float is the only one of those that I care about, and only in situations where an external recorder isn't feasible. None of the main brands are a bad option anymore. If I had to pick, I think I'd go for an S1II--which, to be fair, is more expensive--but my S5 is a long way from being replaced.
-
I seem to be missing why this camera is so amazing, sure good update from the A7IV, but nothing groundbreaking. Or does anything to blow the competition out of the water.
-
I do. Or at least I suspect I do and that is an FX3ii is coming and that WILL have all the ‘missing’ video stuff that is not in the new A7V. The FX2 is a bit of a Frankencamera (I quite like the concept but not quite the execution) possibly to use up a lot of old sensor stock but 🤷♂️ The new A7V is not meant to be a video-centric camera but a stills orientated hybrid, same as the IV was. If they had allowed 6k and left the gate open etc with it, other than the body type, what incentive would there be for any new FX3ii…which I think is certainly coming because although they have had some criticism lately, this is Sony and something they do perhaps more than any other company, is churn out cameras. Very good silent shutter mode on this new A7V for wedding shooters! Not enough to tempt me personally but it’s a really solid stills/hybrid unit at the new price point for such things.
-
Here's the video if anyone wants to learn about hawks and the local people here to track 'em. Also, you can play guess the camera:
-
I think its related to the IP behind partially stacked tech. People believe just because Sony Semi makes the sensor, they own all the IP, but its not true. At the moment there are three flavor of this tech, Nikon has the fastest one, Panasonic owns the one with highest DR, and Sony uses a version between those two. And maybe they have no license to use the best one in a video oriented body, yet.

The irony, for the last two decades we have been pursuing feverously the vista vision look. One by one, years passing by we got large sensor, better codec, even raw and just as we got affordable anamorphic lens, it is now cool to film in 4;3 SD tv format. LOL -

I also find this quite baffling, this camera in a FX2 body would have been a great move! I don't get it!

I dunno real winner for me and surely my next cam purchase is R6 mk3: 7k, RAW, OG, 4K120p no crop. Tried it out and couldn't find any flaws. 7K open gate C-Log2 looks excellent. Recording 7K OG 10-bit H.265 to a normal SD card is super efficient. The S&F mode is surprisingly practical. Being able to set odd frame rates like 46 over 25 directly in camera, in Log, makes it easy to get subtle slow-mo without post tricks. They finally nailed it, third lucks a charm. In comparison, this A7V feels crippled AF. At least they updated the sensor but why no 4K120p no crop, no OG or +4K? Also I'd be mega pissed if I bought an FX2. Sony's strategy is just plain weird, they lost the plot. The four year old A7SIII /FX3 is still leagues better than this for video.
