For full samples by Seb Farges taken on the GH2 click here The Pentax 6mm F1.2 c-mount lens is the cheapest fast wide lens for DSLR filmmaking currently available. To use it you will need to have a Panasonic GH2, and to enable 1080p Ex-Tele mode (commonly known as 1:1 crop mode). It gives a feel similar to 8mm or 16mm film on the GH2.

Canon are rumored to be working on a new codec for the 5D Mark III based on the MPEG format. It is the DSLR version of the codec used in the XF305. It will feature a 4-2-2 colour space and a variable bit rate, up to 50mbit. The move is necessary to avoid paying AVCHD / H.264 licensing fees to Panasonic and Sony.
I recently picked up a Carl Zeiss 50mm F1.4, not the newer one but an older Rollei mount similar to the Contax Zeiss version. The HFT coating was what Zeiss called T* coating on the Rollei lenses. It was designed to go on a Rolleiflex SL35 35mm film camera.
The Lumix 14mm F2.5 is the smallest interchangeable digital camera lens ever made. Smaller than even the Lumix 20mm F1.7 and much lighter, it is even rather well built for a mere ‘kit lens’. Like the excellent 20mm which came with the GF1, the 14mm is bundled with the GF2 and that represents fantastic value, since the lens retails for over ÂŁ250 on it’s own.
It’s been a long time coming but this year Canon will release the product which will finally move DSLR video forward after a long period of relative stagnation, the 5D Mark 3. Here are 10 reasons to look forward to it.
Olympus have been helpfully telegraphing their future strategy in Israel. With Olympus having said that the E-5 would be their last DSLR and with Sony also turning their back on the optical viewfinder, the inevitable future is now in full swing (sush – nobody wake up Canon and Nikon!) Now a previously confidential presentation shows what that future might look like.
UPDATE – Added movie mode still frame grab at 1080p from GH2 and GF2 with same 14mm F2.5 pancake lens. GH2 is better, and it’s sensor is slightly larger too. View full resolution on Flickr here. The GF2 is for people stepping up from compact cameras, and is itself almost as small as the LX5. It’s 14mm F2.5 pancake kit lens is superb, but for those looking for a wide-zoom…
Converge came around for 2011 last week and it was interesting to see both from a creative filmmaker perspective, and from a business point of view where DSLR video is at and more importantly where it is heading. It was also great to finally meet Kevin Shahinian, and to catch up with other key people in the resistance like Philip Bloom, Joe Simon, Robin Schmidt and Sam Morgan Moore amongst…
