An update on the NX-L speed booster for the Samsung NX1

(Above, shot on the NX1 & full frame NX-L).

The Samsung NX1 is at this moment in time the best value for money 4K Super 35mm camera with the best ergonomics and autofocus.

I still end up using my NX1 more than my Sony A6500 and Fuji X-T20, which pale into insignificance vs what Samsung did nearly 3 years ago.

Now the NX-L speed booster has developed further since my last article and I’ve been shooting a lot more with it.

Lets hop over to the world of stills for a moment. For the first time I now have usable AF with Canon EF lenses on the Panasonic GH4 and other Micro Four Thirds cameras.

I’ve been trying out the new Speed Booster Ultra, which as well as the AF improvement offers new and improved optics.

Officially announced – Metabones Canon EF Speed Booster for Micro Four Thirds and Panasonic GH4

First impressions review

The long awaited active Canon EF mount Speed Booster adapter for Micro Four Thirds is finally here. I have a review sample, currently putting it through a few shoots to see how it performs. This is not the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera version but the general Micro Four Thirds mount adapter, so fully compatible with most Micro Four Thirds cameras including the GH4, but not yet the E-M1 or E-M5 due to the overhanging bodywork directly over the mount on those cameras. Finally you can use all your Canon lenses with full electronic support for aperture control and stabilisation.

Metabones Speed Booster for Canon EF to Micro Four Thirds Mount – Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera Edition

speed-booster-2

Along with Philip Bloom and James Miller I have been testing a beta of the first Micro Four Thirds mount Smart EF adapter with Speed Booster from Metabones. Now the final version is available and it will start shipping end of June for $659 at the Metabones site. This version to be released imminently is designed ONLY to fit the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera.

This has the lovely 0.58x glass which turns the 3x crop Blackmagic sensor into a much nicer 1.74x crop, approaching the Super 35mm standard size for cinema.

James has shot some rather lovely footage with it. Do check that out at Philip’s evil rival site to mine 🙂

BMCC variant Speed Booster works on GH3 and GH4 to give 1.28x crop, near full frame

I had hesitated to try this for so long, but finally today a brave EOSHD reader sent me a tweet saying he had fitted his BMCC Speed Booster (with protruding rear-glass) on his GH4. It just goes straight on. First a BIG disclaimer. Speed Booster adapters have adjustable glass which can sit closer or further away from the sensor to fine tune infinity focus. On some adapters this will mean potentially it may clash against the inner housing of the mount and be damaged on a Micro Four Thirds stills camera. Therefore I do not take responsibility for any loss or damage if you try this.

2013 – 10 things which have impressed me – and some that haven’t!

Psst… I’m having an end of year clear out

Where would we be without the end of the year and the impending doom that is Christmas? Enjoying summer? Revelling in the most fruitful year for filmmakers and camera geeks on record? I’d much rather 2013 just carried on!

Alas the year is starting to wind down now for the Holidays and this seems like a good moment to look back at the most amazing (and not so amazing) events of 2013…
