Since the GH1 I have been shooting with Panasonic’s mirrorless system for video. Without this series of affordable cameras my early work as a cinematographer and filmmaker simply wouldn’t be the same. The GH4 marks a much needed major leap for the line, the first to shoot 4K to an efficient internal codec AND output 10bit 4:2:2 1080p over HDMI to an affordable external recorder like the Atomos Ninja!

On a visit to Panasonic I got to see the camera, see 4K sample footage and give my feedback. Here’s an account of what I saw…

New H.265 codec on test – ProRes 4444 quality for 1% of the file size

H.265

CineMartin are the first company I know of to give us H.265 HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) conversion with the just-announced CINEC v2.7. It supports up to 4K resolution and you can try it today.

In case you live at 12 Under Rock Drive, the H.265 standard is the biggest codec of the decade. It supersedes today’s most common codec for encoding and internet delivery of video (H.264) and makes 4K recording to SD cards possible on DSLRs.

Pixels to be superseded by vector technology in new video codec

There’s just been some pretty startling research published by a university in the UK which could herald the biggest change to imaging since the switch from film to digital.

Indeed before it has even begun, 4K may become obsolete along with resolution itself – killed not by 8K or Super-Hi Vision but a completely different kind of technology. A vector based video codec has been developed at the University of Bath.

Test footage from the pre-release Panasonic GH3 at Photokina

This week I was loaned a GH3 body for a short time at Photokna by Panasonic. This test footage was shot in 1080/25p ALL-I mode at 72Mbit, with two slow mo-sequences of Pocahontas and the juggler shot in AVCHD 1080/50p at 50Mbit.

I also had a go at grading the GH3 footage with Peter Patten of Apple.

GH3 - now officially announced

Described by Panasonic as a semi-professional ‘creative HD hybrid’ and a flagship model for the company, the Panasonic GH3 is finally here – 2 years after the GH2 arrived. The official unveiling answers some of the mysteries too.

Photokina is less than a month away now and it is going to be a busy time. I will be there to get my hands on the new cameras, and I don’t think I can remember a month like this with such exciting products being released.

Sony’s full frame camcorder the VG-900 will have a mirrorless mount, all in a video camera form factor for £2.5k and of course we have the Blackmagic Cinema Camera which soots amazing 12bit raw for the same price. These were mythical cameras only 6 months ago. Raw video for $3000? Full frame video camera with E-mount?

Then we come to the GH3.
