I agree with the above sentiments about getting one and trying it out.

In terms of RAM and Apple vs PC, I've found that Apple handles RAM better than PCs, but it all falls apart if you run out of space on the SSD, so I'd suggest finding some SSD benchmarks if they're around yet, and buying the largest one that has good speeds.  I haven't kept up with the tech, but it used to be that there was a sweet spot in size where below and above that size the performance suffered.

I recently bought a new 13" MBP but seriously considered the Mac Mini as you sure get a lot of performance for your money compared to other Macs.

One thing I've wondered with the benchmarks is the T2 chip, which supposedly accelerates encoding and decoding, but it doesn't appear in things like the Activity Monitor, and I struggled to find the detail about which types of files it worked with.  For example, maybe it works with h265, but is that only 420 or 422, and what about 10-bit, etc etc.

It works fine with HEVC 4:2:2 10-bit (and other variants too) as a lot of iPad users have reported being able to easily play back footage in that format.

So the S1 just became a 6k 10bit full frame camera?? I'll take it!

Cant wait for this to release! Also 4k 60fps 10bit and raw 6k! Wow! Its essentially an entirely new league of camera now

    Good job Panasonic!

I'm honestly stunned but what they're including. I really wanted the AF improvements (more for stills than anything else) and hope we might get 4k60/10bit but I never expected this. Even after all of the new camera announcements I'd still choose an S1.

Not in the low quality 4K mode, nor in the APSC cropped 4K mode. Overheating free.

No overheating in any mode (8K included) in ambient temperatures 60F/16C degrees too.

Have they improved the cool-down times after you've used it in photo mode? Can you shoot some HQ/8k footage now without having let it cool for hours?

@MrSMW Yes, for me it would have been perfect with full HDMI, which the S1 has. S1 on the other hand needs a paid Upgrade for 10 bit and Vlog and still does not have 10bit for 4K60, which the S5 has.

Indeed, so close. I guess i will have to pay the 200 EUR for the update and still be without 10bit for the 4K60 as of now. S1H has both but is too expensive for me.

Just a hunch but I think there's a decent chance that they'll include 10-bit 4k/60 in the next firmware. Remember you'll get 10-bit via HDMI too.

No 4K 60 10 bit. No All-I. Instant show stoppers for me. This is before you get to the AF which just doesn't cut it these days. Plus the IBIS doesn't look great, given they're targetting this at vloggers with flippy screen and size, another miss.

I agree with Gerald Undone's assessment that it's a strange combo - will ultimately support anamorphic but no 4K 60 10 bit and All-I?

Missed opportunity all round. Strange choices by Pannasonic. As an aside the leaked specs didn't match up.

    It does have 4k 60 10-bit surely?

@Andrew Reid went very easy on the S5.

They made lots of annoying handicaps and compromises.

    • 30 min record limit in certain modes are a bummer.
    • The micro HDMI is unacceptable (why is this a thing in 2020; Japanese camera cabal cripple?)
    • Their DfD AF is still quite shit, especially compared to latest offerings from Sony and Canon (but somewhat useable in S35 4K60; see down below*)
    • No FF 4K60 in 10-bit
    • No All-I
    • Second card slot is UHS-I (which makes it impossible to do dual recording in ALL-I; if they add that feature in the future)

I agree with Gerald Undone on this one. This is a strange camera. If I was an S1 owner I would be perplexed. They better have a compelling firmware update for the S1 and S1H.

    * Since the AF performance is much improved in higher frame rates. Why the hell doesn’t Panasonic give us a NTSC 48fps FF mode? You could shoot in this mode with a 360 degree shutter. In post every other frame will be dropped cleanly (no 2.5 frames drops as in 60p -> 24).

Might be worth it for NTSC shooters to shoot in PAL with the clean 25p and 50p and then use synchro-scan (does it the S5 have it) to eliminated any flickering to get that clean 50p -> 25p conversion with decent AF performance.

Agreed, the 30 minutes limits and micro HDMI are pretty bad cripples. There's also the weaker EVF and LCD screen and poorer IBIS to add into the equation (I've watched a few videos now and it definitely looks worse). It's definitely crippled quite a lot compared to the S1 although it adds loads of stuff too. I'm still impressed by the size of it and the price is more than reasonable (basically the same as I paid for my S1s).

Wow! The new AF in APC-S mode is actually beating Sony A73! 😬 Did not expect that! (watch Max)

It gives me hope, that Panasonic CAN actually do a working AF if they keep increasing processing power. Wow.

It did over a year ago in Richard Wong's comparison with the v1.2 on the S1. For controlled tests like this (not real-world) it performs well.

After watching Max's AF test... The auto focus in full frame is your typical Panasonic AF, but the auto focus in APS-C is actually pretty good. It actually was quicker than the A7 III in some scenarios. It seems to be a processing issue in FF, since it's working harder.

The mini HDMI and recording limits though are deal breakers for me.

It's more the fact his tests are the usual smoothly run/walk towards/away from camera and not real tests. Gerald Undone did one and it looks as bad as ever unfortunately:

"What you need to be very mindful of when using Panasonic Lumix S series cameras, and this includes the S5, is that the HDMI delay is horrible. I did a series of tests to work out the average delay when outputting over HDMI. The average latency taken from 3 tests was a whopping 221ms."   -Newsshooter.

    OW. Deal breaker for me.

😞 Really surprised they didn't improve this.

Hi Andrew, thanks for the information you are providing.

I think I may have messed up my point about the memory card. I don't mean that the memory card overheats due to the writing, but because it's close to something hot.

    My "idea" was, that
    - something in the camera - e.g. the main controller - leads to internals heating up
-- no one cares about temperatures beyond the regulations of surfaces, because it's internal
    - this also leads to the memory cards getting hot
-- memory cards can be removed
-- Removal parts apply to the temperature limits defined by safety regulations

    From the external forum:

134F is about 56°C. Safety regulation requires a maximum temperature of 55° C for "prolonged" and 60° C for short periods only.

But this does not explain why it's taking so long to cool down.

Just out of interest: how do you know?

I fully agree with you on this point. Even if they say "The current generation of our DIGIC X can only manage 65°C, because XYZ" it would be OK for me.

But like this I feel fooled and that's not the feeling I should have as the customer.

SMART which is featured in all CFExpress cards as far as I know allows reporting of temperatures.

Yeap, exactly my point. As I said, I have some electronics background, and a 2nd year student would never make that mistake. CPU and memory with a thermal pad to conduct the heat...to another board? And when you have a big heat spreader just behind the main board, but put the chips in the other side?

It is on purpose, or they have the dumbest engineers in the world.

As I said a while back on here, this is by no means unheard of. You see the same garbage on $$$$$ laptops with inadequate cooling, or poorly applied poor thermal paste etc. etc. Same in the music industry.

The great irony is that Canon made a point about all the heat generating components being strategically kept away form each other and literally the opposite is true!

For anyone interested, someone finally pointed me to a video showing the 1.6x crop mode footage.  To me it looks very sharp and detailed.   It is at around the 2:14 minute mark.  If  you look at the regular 4k mode before it there is a big difference in the pixelation of the street lights.    Canon's heat sheet claims this mode does not overheat.  So unlike the R you get IBIS and 10 bit internal, and maybe a little bit better autofocus in this mode.   Not ideal for the price, but at least there is a decent 4k mode for longer record times.

Thanks, was looking for this. I'm interested again!

What would happen if you put that speed booster on the R5? Is the crop similar to the Eos R?

They were very quick of the mark with a custom built fan, so definitely they knew.  Question is how?  Did Canon give them the heads up?  I can't see how else they would know and have one designed for the R5 body..  Maybe Canon saw this has something to pacify the video shooters when it became clear how bad the issue was.  All feels a bit dodgy to me.

If Canon do recall the R5 and R6, the forums are going to go crazy.  We'll be seeing Hitler and laughing Spanish guy videos every day.

If it's really the case that there's inadequate heatsinks and poor/no/badly-applied thermal compound, then why didn't they just sort that out? Can't believe they'd do a deliberate crippling like that.

Regarding the so-called "16bit linear RAW" 4264 x 2408 60FPS HDMI output, it's actually derived from 12bit ADC sensor readout, then dithered(upscaled) by the DSP to 16bit.

Hope you don't mind me asking but how do you know this? Are the specs for the sensor they're using online?

Max Yuryev says the A7 III (when compared to A7S 3) has more detail in 4K/24P thanks to its oversampling. But Gerald Undone is reporting the complete opposite. Who's right? Is Gerald shilling?

Polin has a test showing both. The A7 III looks much better. It really is like night and day if this test is to be believed.

    XAVC S/XAVC S-I is H.264, XAVC-HS is X.265, XAVC-HS is limited to 200Mbit, XAVC-S-I up to 600Mbit, XAVC-S up to 100Mbit, really weird that Sony stick to 100Mbit on both 420 8bit and 422 10bit.

200Mbit/sec is horrible for 4k/120 surely?
