Canon gear advice for pro photographer getting into videography
Video Hummus replied to ghostwind's topic in Cameras
I agree with above. Use what you have. Maybe Canon will be releasing a Pro level FF R mount mirrorless camera in the next 8 months that will fit your needs. -
...And I think this why Sony is slowly overtaking them. I honestly think Canon is just riding the consumer camera train with their brand and logo as the ticket for as long as possible with almost zero investment because there is not much profits in it anymore. When that train loses steam they will fall back on their camera patents and lens designs and license those. I find it hard to believe there is zero foresight at the management of this company. And don’t tell me it’s a Japanese thing. Other Japanese camera companies seem to get it.

I always have a 8sinn cage on my GH5S and I also prefer a slightly heavier body. So, the body, with cage is close to 900 grams. The real weight savings for m4/3 is the lenses. I have: PL 50-200 655grams PL 10-25 690grams With only two lenses I have an enormous amount of coverage (20mm to 400mm) for only 1.3 Kg of lens weight. Canon 70-200f2.8 is more than 1.3Kg alone. The f4 is close to 850g. You can go lighter with primes depending on what you need. When you are hiking up a mountain or lugging around gear, this is where you love m43. And there are also lenses like the 12-100 F4 from Olympus that are basically the do it all lens at 561 grams.

The EOS R was heavily marketed by influencers on YouTube who were sent free cameras. It was marketed as the ultimate YouTube vlogging camera. Which, I guess, it is considering it’s image and the total lack of power features. It was uniformly touted as “good enough”. Im not sure if this was a feedback loop or just plain old “here’s some marketing points. We told you nothing *wink*”. I don’t see why this is such a big deal. The camera doesn’t do what you want. It doesn’t have 24p. IF that is important to you then Canon doesn’t offer something in your price range. Look to other brands.

Was just about to post this. Panasonic still segments but without the canon malice. Quote from Sean that I think sums it all up: “We at Panasonic make incredibly pragmatic products”. I would agree. Now fix your autofocus! He also throws some subtle shade towards Nikon about ProRes Raw coming to the S1H. They clearly took feedback from the G9, S1, and the GH5S and didn’t repeat mistakes. The on/off switch. IBIS with dual gain ISO. The flip screen and tilt screen (give the people what they want). Pragmatic codec on pragmatic media with dual slots. Great battery life. Why they stay stubborn on the AF is beyond me. It’s better but they are still taking heat from it. They need to knock that aspect out of the park.

I always take what you tubers recommend with a nice heap of salt. They need to maintain relationships with these companies to get paid, whether directly or indirectly, with monies or free gear or exclusive access. They all have angles they don’t talk about. They are essentially in the advertisement business. Their job is to influenced us. This is why I come to EOSHD.

The S1H has the potential to be a cult Indy favorite. The price will slowly creep down. Panasonic will release firmware to keep it fresh and exciting. It has the capability to do ProRes Raw for people that want it (with extra cost and build out). It seems to have a great 6K image with a strong codec to affordable and ubiquitous SD media. It has IBIS, which is valued more in low budget Indy stuff, that can be locked down when you want to reduce the floating sensor affect. I suspect it’s capable of more. Just as the GH5 was and the GH4 before it.

The 360 concept is definitely the future of action cams. They just need more resolution.
-
Nah, it’s all going to Apple and Samsung.

I’m a bit disappointed it doesn’t have internal ProRes 422 as a cinema camera and no 4K 60p 10bit with full sensor. Otherwise, it’s quite an amazing product in the usual Panasonic buffet of features. I have a feeling future firmware updates will improve upon its features. Its like the GH5 for full frame. Flip screen screen (and tilt) included WITH good IBIS. The ball is in your court Sony.

That’s fair. I’m not advocating one way or the other. If you do that and it works, great. For people who don’t have or want to muck around with adapters this is an option.

Thanks Dave! I wonder why the colors aren’t as nice on the OMLog? Hopefully you slap the 10-25 f1.7 and share the experience. I’ve been thinking about picking up an Olympus camera. Either the new EM5 or the the next EM1. I know Olympus has had a lot of feedback on their EM1X with regards to video from their initial beta field testers. The testers see value in it as a video camera as well now. I hope they take that and run with it.

Yeah it appears Panasonic is going to really segment their product line. Photographer S1R (with limited video features) Hybrid S1 (with limited video features stock; paid upgrade for more) Videographer S1H pure video with best video features. Which isn’t a bad product line up. It’s clear what camera is better for you based on what you want to do with it. With the hybrid S1 kinda playing the budget video role as well.

I have the 350aw and have traveled quite a bit internationally with it. It fits under the seat on every international flight I was on. On smaller domestic flights it just barely fit (really depends heavily on the aircraft). With that being said, the 350 is not my favorite bag. It’s capacity seems to always just be short of space for that last thing you want to bring. It’s also not very ergonomic on long days or hikes (not sure if that matters to you). There is also no space for non camera stuff like a light pull over or anything! Ive been looking into Atlas bags. They strike a nice balance between camera storage and general storage. They might be of interest to you if you are adventuring with your gear. https://atlaspacks.com/

Could this be the long fabled camera of @Andrew Reid dreams?
-
Well, yes of course. That is among the fastest primes for any system. The 20-50 on GH5 not on the GH5S when shooting 16:9 or 17:9. the 10-20 1.7 will replace the 1.4 and 1.7 primes without much downside and more flexibility. 1.2 primes...eh. Maybe not. The 1.2s from Olympus are quite pleasing but also pricey. I’d still prefer the 10-25 for the flexibility. Good thing about MFT we have lots of options ?
-
Maybe. They know as soon as they release a have decent camera all will be forgiven and most forgotten. The bar is pretty low. 4K, no crop FF DPAF all modes, 24p. They can do it. They just don’t want to. So they will sell old tech with new name because it will sell, maybe not well, but it will.
-
Well the general consensus is that it is a wide zoom that can take the place of primes, like they said it would. The sharpness, distortion, and flares are extremely well controlled. It has an interesting focal range and a great aperture with pretty decent DoF for m4/3 especially at its longer focal range of 18-25. I have a GH5S so it would be a 18-45 f1.7 (dof of f3) equivalent FF lens, which really isn’t that bad. This is when shooting 16:9 or 17:9 on the sensor. Is it worth the premium over the sigma 18-35? That’s my dilemma now. The AF is good to very good when shooting 60p. Seems to be fair to good with 30p. And just OK with 24p. Geralds video didn’t even exhibit AF ? so not sure what was going on there. EDIT: I’ve decided to keep my preorder and do my own tests. I’ll post them here when I get around to it.

I think there is something wrong with his lenAF test (wonky settings, bad lens, etc...) Look at other reviews with this lens with the G9. The autofocus is great. So it leaves me scratching my head. I was going to buy but now not sure. I haven’t seen any other reviews of it with the GH5/S. Hybrid shooter at the 5:10 mark for AF. Gordan Lang’s hands on 19:00 for AF. Update: Here is one with the GH5S. It’s not s great test.
