It is not a camera meant for us. But it sure is a camera you would want to give to your wife, girlfriend, children to take Photos and Video that are actually in Focus. Who doesn't want that. And Sony is Finally doing a half decent touchscreen, Yea, and a touch screen you can use in multiple positions. I think Sony has done some head scratching and come up with a fairly cheap, small, light, reasonable solution on the low end of their market. Like it or not I bet it will be a pretty big hit for them.

    Exactly right!
@Andrew Reid assessment is wrong here. He is not looking at this camera in the big picture of Sony's product line and product strategy roadmap.

Sony if offering a great camera, small with amazing AF capabilities (Sony A9 level). APS-C 4k video. It flips for doing selfies (which is I think their biggest market focus and not as much the vloggers market).

It's clear that Sony is going to ratchet up product announcement from least exciting to the most exciting as the year progresses.  They have said the new updated firmware for A7III/A7RIII is coming in April which might indicate the release timing of the A7Siii.  The 6400 is going to be an amazing entry-level camera for any new users that wants to step up from mobile phone or P&S or debating an interchangeable lens camera vs P&S.  Not long ago, a camera with this kind of AF speed and FPS would have cost $4-8K. It's now an entry-level camera. This will make the 6400 the gateway drug into Sony's ecosystem. Both Canon and Nikon are now forced to react and up their games to acquire new users.

So yes, the 6400 is not a "turkey" but a good product-market strategy and Sony has given this a lot more thought than you give them credit. Both Canon's and Nikon's APS-C future mirrorless offering at the sub $1000 market will be compared against the 6400.

There are other things in a6400 too....biggest positive is the elimination of 29 minutes in video!
another good thing is the adoption of HLG video, hdr video without the need of slog.

Main reason why I stick with Sony is because of the ecosystem.
Sony is the only brand that has mirrorless apsc, full frame, super 35 video cameras, and a full frame cinema camera all with the SAME lens mount, similar features, and color science/profiles.
Not to mention also having traditional fixed lens camcorders for run and gun docs and events.

Fuji has no real video cameras or cinema cameras to upgrade to.
Pansonic brings more to the table than probably anyone but is split between m4/3rds, ye old Canon EF mount for their video cameras and cinema cameras (varicam line) , and Now L mount whose only options are the laughably priced leica lenses.
Not only is Canon is crippled beyond belief but that system has 3 lens mounts -_- EF mount, RF mount, and the unknown future of the apsc M mount...

Don't mistake a hybrid for a dedicated cinema camera. The C200 is my main workhorse. I loooovvvveee the full sized XLRs, unlimited record time, handling, powerful rawlite codec. It's a wonderful thing to use. The 1DXMK2 is a tremendous stills camera. Trust me when I tell you the EOS R is no 1DXMK2... not even close. It's a weird kit... yes, but I suspect Nikon is going to deliver the hybrid we have all been waiting for, while Canon is going to continue to be "Canon". The Z6 represent a cheap way for me to test the Nikon waters. Honestly, so far I like what I see. Although my girl agrees with you.
Oh, about that "beefy" codec... after bending the footage from both around in post, from what I can see, it is no more bendable than the Nikon codec... but it's about 3x the size... so there's that. I'm not saying it's bad, but it really takes awhile to transfer the footage compared to the Nikon, partly because the files are larger, and partly because the XQD is faster.

I just wanted to quickly pop in here after reading the article. It's not that I disagree with Andrew's words on the A7III, or that it's ranked in the number 2 spot but that you had nothing positive to say about it. Again, it's not that anything you said was necessarily wrong. But how about giving it credit for shaking things up. For being the new de facto for "Entry level" full frame. For not holding back where other camera manufacturers would have.
Yes, the Fuji has some of the best video quality but I'd say it's only just 'Slightly' better than the A7III. I have a feeling that a lot of the time you won't notice the difference. It's got the Sony beat with color straight out of the camera but most of us do a little grading anyway so I'm not sure I could fault them for that.
But I get it, Fuji deserves the #1 spot and Sony deserves the #2 spot. I agree with that. It's just that it would have been nice if you had mentioned some of it's stronger points:
With the A7III, Sony brought highend features like IBIS, 10 FPS, dual card slots, amazing low light performance, amazing auto focus, beautifully detailed 4K video, improved color science, and far better battery life ("Amazing" I should say) to a platform that many people where on the fence about. And I think they also forced Nikon and Cannon to show their hands. Maybe even before they were ready. The A7III showed the camera world that Sony were serious about about being #1. Even if they only made #2. ;-)
But yes, you're right,  it's a boring looking, utilitarian, working photographer's camera. It's menu's are crap and the screens are average at best and don't flip out and around. But your argument that it doesn't inspire artistic photography... again, I'm not sure I can really fault them for that. Sony has a very subtle, clean, and flare-less design language.  And just like the car industry, some people appreciate flare like BMW while others like the subtlety of Audi.
I have to say, I do feel inspired by my A7III. It's perfect for me because I do a little of everything. Portrait, landscape, still life, street, plus tons of video. it's small size paired with the right lens, makes the A7III great at all of it. To me, Sony hit a sweet spot with this one. Just enough high end features where it matters and skimping on the features that aren't as good as the competition but are ultimately "good enough" to keep the price down. This is the first camera to tick off all the little camera features that I wanted and it did it in a $2000 body. That works for me. Take my money!

I mean its not like the downscaling will give more work. It will only offer you better flexibility and image quality. Also just something to think about, a hybrid camera that shoots 4K will have a higher resale value going to into the future.

I agree 1000x, I guess I'm fortunate to not be heavily invested in EF glass or like Canons color science at all.
If people continue to throw a blind eye at Canons wrong doings they will continue to make gimped products like the 6dmkii, Eos R, and 5Dmk4

Shooting 4K and downscaling in post is a pretty good way of getting high quality 1080p, and it may record in a higher bitrate too.
I have done image quality comparisons of different resolutions given the same file size, and you're normally better off with the higher resolution, so even if the camera shoots the same bitrate for 1080 and 4K, you'd still be better with the 4K file.

Buy a G7, better camera and it has 4K. Probably same money. You can find them for less than 400 bucks. I Never liked my GH3. Liked the G7. I would rather have a hacked GH2 than a GH3 anyday.
