    Hold my beer! ?
I'm addressing the dramatic and false narrative that seeped into otherwise fun, speculative conversation we're here for. While keeping open to many sources is a great thing, are they all equally valid and valuable? If the whole business model of youtube is to attract views, what does that say of the general intention and direction of the narrative there?
I have never come across him before so I've made an effort to see some of his videos, visited his website, and generally informed myself about him from what he presented online. I agree with you, he doesn't seem to be someone desperately trying to stir the pot in order to attract views. I had problems finding his work or something that would give me a reason to believe he has a deep experience and knowledge of the topic. Apart from a smooth presentation reminding of a well rehearsed TED 'talker', he's not saying anything different. Maybe in different way, more, shall we say, (insert here his trademark slow nod and bringing index finger to the lower lip), thoughtful.
He says that Nikon has an "opportunity to redefine state of the art -- actually reset the entire industry -- but they have to get past Sony's a7 III first", then states in the video that if they don't do that - they lose. What does it mean? Nikon stops existing, it's the beginning of the end for that brand? Why? Why do you think it is?
It was a genuine question. From your previous posts, I've gotten a sense that you do have an idea.
Again, I really don't see how I can enlighten you ( who is the plural you?). I'm asking because I thought you have some idea.

I’m writing this to try and make people here step away from the discourse that’s been prevailing. Guessing and speculating is fun as we said somewhere earlier but it became a narrative of this battle or survival. And it’s not. And it has nothing to do with reality. It’s not a reality of creative industry, authors, amateurs, simple professionals. It’s only reality of youtube ‘influencers’, embattled fans on DPReview, idle wanna-dos.

I would actually give Nikon a greater chance of having a better FF Mirrorless than Canon to be honest. Canon can sort of gimp around, I don't think Nikon has that option. And Nikon color science is pretty damn good to be honest. I like it better than Canon for a lot of stuff. Maybe not wedding photography but.. Plus, who doesn't like the underdog here.

Dell Optiplex is a popular choice for offlease starter PC to use as your base, you can see lots of people have done basically this. Purchased an Optiplex then stuck a better GPU in it, plus maybe some extra RAM.

Some people might recommend upgrading the PSU as well (but then again he is putting a 1070 in there, even the YT Host himself says he'd recommend putting a 1050 Ti in there instead):

OzTalksHW is a channel I quite like, I've watched a lot of his videos as he has quite a few of these low budget builds:

I am so hyped for this camera. Even just D850 video specs with IBIS would probably be enough to win me over.
I don't need all the picture customization of sony's. Dare i say i wouldn't even need log profile.
Nikon color science (and flat profile) is that nice:
I guess i'm already sold, but of course if Nikon nail video AF and get it close to dual pixel goodness, it might even be game over for Canon.

I think the current general narrative - Nikon v Sony - FF mirrorless isnt that productive. Sony has set the bar in terms of 'features' and 'value' incredibly high to think that Nikon will beat it with their first mirrorless offering.
From Nikon's perspective the most important thing is that they get their installed customer base on board for their mirrorless product and dont continue to leak elsewhere.
From that perspective, it is incredibly important that their adapter works incredibly well (or certainly much better than a Nikon lens on a Sony - which certainly isnt asking a lot

I've enhanced the image using the latest Hollywood VFX and I can conclude it's so large because it has to fit in all the video modes..
    I can clearly make out 1080 RAW 12bit, 1080 RAW 14bit, 4K RAW 14bit, 4K RAW 16bit, 4K Prores 444 HQ, 5K RAW, 5K Prores 444 HQ, 6K Prores 444 HQ, 8K Prores 444 HQ, but the last two are too blurry - I'm assuming they're 10K to downsample for 8K.

Well, thats set the frenzy off on that site good and proper hasn't it?

"So, as you can see, its probably a 67mm thread on that lens, which if we also reference it to the available data on average index finger length of South East Asian females in the 20-26 years of age group we should be able to extrapolate the exact dimensions of the camera and have a 3D printed model ready before bedtime"

HDR footage shows up over exposed and insane. But just try pulling your highlights down and playing with it. All the information is there. The LUT fixes it too. So just apply the lut and you’ll see

    Hello!

I had some time to pass over the summer so I made a breakdown of a music video I shot last year. I tried to write it so that anybody could copy exactly what I did.

I have to laugh when I see the lowlight of these cameras.
For years I have been using cameras that start being pretty shameful, even for home videos, at ISO 3200 or 6400.  Nit-picking these cameras at ISOs this high feels like being judgemental of someone that won bronze in the olympics!!

Purely speculating. But I think it is very likely that Canon will put FF in its existing EF-M for APSC. The throat diameter of EF-M is 47mm which is wider than Sony E mount. This would also give an (ongoing) upgrade path from APSC to FF for mirrorless buyers.

Haha love how big that mount looks! I think Nikon are desperately trying not to make the same mistake they did with the F-mount size

Hoping they are going for a 5x7 ratio rather than the typical narrow 3 x 5. It would still be full frame so all the legacy glass will work but would give a larger image area.

I have to say, I’m more excited about this camera than the BMP4K. Especially if This is the work of a collaborative effort with Samsung. Nikon has no dog in the fight where video is concerned, so this might be the camera that properly addresses that shortcoming.
    I bid 5000 qautloos!

This is one of the few videos shot on a7 III that made me somehow believe in its video capabilities.

This one is also appealing to me, though shot on a7R III.

Haha, I've grew up in small town KS, so I'm quite familiar with the backroads of the midwest.  One of my favorite games to play is to just drive and flip a coin at an intersection every once in awhile and see where I end up.  I'm currently in Fort Wayne, which is actually surprisingly rich with interesting subject matter and local art, so really no excuses there.  That said, I have relatives that live in the shadows of both Rocky Mountain NP and Glacier NP...none of them have made a trip this direction for the purpose of scoping out the local terrain.

My first serious run with the A7III will be next weekend.  I'm due to cover a car show in a pretty idyllic looking little town, so hopefully I'll do it justice.

freakin' Indiana is Freakin Beautiful to shoot in! I was in Brookville and Saint Marys road to Sunman 2 days ago, just a beautiful area. This Harley was shot in Brookville, Indiana.
The video below was shot on Saint Marys Road. I had to hurry, Really Hurry! The Farmer that owned that Field was Mowing the other side of the road I was parked on with a John Deere Tractor from hell coming at me fast as heck!  He stopped in front of my car and I talked to him I bet for 15 minutes about his farm and my video equipment. Farmers are great people. And there is a Bunch of them close to where I live. I only live like 5 miles from the Indiana border in Ohio. Most of my fathers side of the family are farmers in Iowa.

Agreed.  I haven't had a chance to do anything serious with mine yet (and I live in freakin' Indiana, so there's that). But a lot of the stuff out there, and the "cinematic" examples on youtube, are pretty bad overall.  I think a lot of people are upgrading from a6500 type cameras and they're more vloggers than filmmakers.  The second example you posted is particularly nice, I think that's the best I've seen.

Has anyone shot anything really impressive with the A7III yet?
I did a big comparison of the 'look' of the BMPCC vs the A73 by binging on BMPCC travel films for 2-3 hours and then trying to binge on A7III films, but the only real observation I made was that A7III owners can't edit for sh*t!
The only A7III videos I've seen that aren't terrible are these..

This probably bugs me more than it should, but they always leave out the f45 part from the equivalent equation. Don't large numbers there sound equally impressive?
24-3000mm f15-45 suddenly sounds really stupid when it comes to light gathering.
4.2-532mm f2.8-8 is the real lens but I'm starting to think that is a stretch too. Although it is impressive zoom range tho, but why.

Hey all, jumping right in here on the forums to share my work shot using Pro Color!

I've come from the Canon world but now love my Sonys. Pro Color was a God-sent and I am fully embracing it!
More to come but in the meantime please see this short video of a buddy of mine fishing shot handheld on the new Sony A7iii using a Nikkor 35mm f1.4 ai-s and 105mm f2.5 ai-s. V3 Pro Color was installed on the camera as at the time of filming V4 was not yet out. I applied a Lut of mine, Tenkara, you can grab from my website.
Thanks Andrew for making these killer profiles!

Drew Allegre reacted to julienajarry in Pro SENNHEISER shoot shot using PRO COLOR V3
Hey all! I want to share this trailer for Sennheiser's Pro Talk Season 2 I shot using a Sony FS7, A7iii and A7sii.
Two weeks before the shoot I decided I wasn't happy with my current slog3 workflow and wanted to change it up. I found Pro Color V3 (at the time, V4 was not out yet) and gave it a shot. I loaded it up on the A7sii and A7iii, barely made a few tweaks to both to match them up, give me a great result and bam. I was sold. I then created a preset in FCPX (yea I edit on FCPX for now) that took my FS7 slog3 footage and popped it into Pro Color V3 matching the other two cameras perfectly. So my new flow is like this, Pro Color on the A7 series cameras and the FS7 shoots slog3, I then match the FS7 to the A7 series cameras in post and work from there. The reason why I needed Pro Color in my life was because I had these beautiful little A7 series cameras but couldn't use them to their full (small) potential shooting slog3. I didn't want to have to tote around an external monitor, etc. There's a lot more to say but I'll leave it at that. Way more to come. Enjoy.

    Hello,
I am getting the 7III soon. Shot with A7RII 2 years ago, cant remember what I used.

I plan to set the Custom 1 dial to 4K30p with specific PP and settings, Custom 2 for HD120p with specific settings again, and using the regular priority aperture mode for photos. Therefore I would never be using the proper video mode. Few questions:
    - Is there an inconvenient with that?
    - I assume the Custom 1 and 2 on the dials are considered photo mode. Any disadvantage shooting videos in photo mode? (like different AF performance, ...) Am I loosing anything not using the regular video mode?

If above is not good what do you recommend?
For PP, AF settings and so on I am all set.
    Thanks

This is the exact set up I use on my A7riii - the big advantage is that it is super easy to switch from photo to video and back - it works really well for me.
I have it setup so that C1 and C2 'are' in 'video mode'.
One disadvantage, as pointed out by another poster on this thread, is that you 'cant' set a 'custom white balance' to work under C1 and C2.
Gary Friedman's books on the A7x series are excellent (PDFs about US$30) - I always buy one when I get a new A7 version. They run to over 600 pages!! Although about 300 pages are filler - things like how to use flash with your A7x.
They are incredibly comprehensive and a great reference document with good indexing.

There is no installation, it's just specific settings in camera to achieve the look.

Made a quick Comparison between S-LOG 3, GFILM, and EOSHD HDR. Love the results right out of camera with this. SLOG 3 just straight up breaks, GFILM still breaks but less so, and EOSHD seems to show the least compression. I've been leaning more on getting the image right in camera and not in post, and am heavily leaning towards this profile unless I'm using an external recorder.
