  1. @wyrlyn You could use any monitor that takes NPF style batteries and then use a battery like this, which has a 7.2v DC output as well: https://cvp.com/product/swit_s-8972 To my knowledge, all Atomos recorders use NPF batteries and so do most others.
  2. It's all so dependant on your individual needs though. If I I'm handholding all day and had these choices: or I would 100% go for the bigger bodies. The servo zoom alone on the FSx can really be great in a doc style shoot, and I find putting the actual camera on my shoulder is always going to be steadier than using a rails shoulder system. Then there's the ergonomics of the bigger cameras when they're on your shoulder. A proper grip with exposure controls etc. which the smallers just don't have, so either the actual camera is a way off your shoulder, or you arm is in a very uncomfortable position. Either opens up the possibilty for less stable operation, since the pivot is on your shoulder. With that said, I do have daily access to an UM4.6k and FS5, yet 98% of the time go with my P4k. My day to day shoot is set up on a tripod, so size is almost irrelevant. The main difference here is I can fit more lenses in the bag, to have more choices on location. Anyway, the point is, you can't rule out certain body styles for the whole industry because your needs don't require such a big body.
  3. A friend once told me they purposely leave a bottle of water in their bag, so their gear gets taken to one side and held away from public until he gets through the scanner. Then the security go through his bag, throw away the water and off he goes...
  4. @BTM_Pix - no disagreement from me, I was just clarifying and adding info to what you wrote, but also trying to explain why a 4K Star wouldn't add anything to the Pocket and Star workflow that already exists, so there's no point waiting for it. In my opinion, the Pocket 4k and the desired 4K Star don't go together at all. If they did release one, Atomos would have other cameras in mind to pair it with. As you say, the LS300 for example, or of course a small footprint Nikon/ProRes RAW option. Sorry if my point came across any other way than intended. @AlexTrinder96 - at this price I'd still sooner go for the 5inch BMD VA for the backup recordings with a P4K, but realise other people want different things. Is this Atomos really much smaller than the VA?
  5. So the argument is for people with multiple cameras, not just P4K owners? Don’t get me wrong a 4K star would sell a bunch and I’d buy one, but not for my P4k. Itd also be be awful for FS5 users as using the HDMI out shuts off the LCD and viewfinder while recording ?
  6. I don't think it is aimed at Pocket owners. At this price, if you have the P4K it'd be better to get the 5inch Blackmagic Video Assist that records 1080p as well. The UI between camera and VA is the same, the batteries are the same and you can record 1080 and 4K at the same time. - the Ninja V is overkill since the P4K doesn't output 4k, and the Shinobi is just a monitor (with great features). You don't need a 4K Ninja Star for that, in fact, being 4K would make it overkill for the Pocket. The OG Star - which I use a lot with the pocket - is perfect. Output the LUT and record a 1080 file and a LOG/RAW 4K file at the same time. In my line of work, we use 4K for backups/future proof and 1080 for actual broadcast, so a majority of shoots we're just downscaling the footage. The BMD VA or Ninja Star skips that step, and we have both resolutions in real time, automatically. The only real difference is if you'd like a monitor or not. Interesting side-note for those who do have the P4K and the Ninja Star - the Rec trigger on the camera sets the Star to record too. Most recent cameras don't do that since Atomos changed their trigger protocol, meaning you have to press Rec on the camera and the Star.
  7. Don't forget no mic input on GX85. But seriously, the GX85 is like 3 years old now and, in my opinion, this doesn't offer enough to be worth upgrading really. That said, if you have neither, go for the Fuji. Maybe if Fuji somehow add 4k60p in the future, it'll worth that upgrade, and since they added 4K to the X-Pro2 via a firmware upgrade, I'm not counting 60p out just yet.

While I agree with Black Panther in the Best Picture category - It should be noted that the category is not really the best film, but the best produced film, which is why the producers are named alongside it on the Academy's website. https://www.oscars.org/oscars/ceremonies/2019 As for the awards being handed out during the break. I guess it's silly, but honestly, I've never once seen the ceremony, so whatever. I'm sure whoever wins those categories won't really mind as they have the trophy either way. Last year, those categories were televised, and I might be wrong, but even on here, a very small amount of us could name the winners without looking them up. So does it really make any difference?
  13. This is purely hypothetical, but I thought it might be interesting. The Nikon Z cameras can (or will be able to) output RAW to record to ProRes Raw on Atomos recorders. If BMD should implement Braw into their Video Assist recorders, could that theoretically record Braw from the Nikons?
  14. A simple one, but get in the habit of backing up and emptying your media as soon as you're back to base. Also format it in camera immediately after backup. This way, when you take the camera out to shoot and see there's something on the card, you know it's not backed up yet.

    I don't think any camera manufacturer will release a camera that can't do internal 4k30p. In fact, I think 4k60p is quickly becoming a minimum requirement for many camera buyers, even over 10 bit. Especially in the non-pro, hobbyist market.
  19. Well, the gimbal's job is to keep the camera level, so it's using the motors to do that. If you balance the camera perfectly, the motors aren't working so hard to keep it balanced, and instead can use their full strength to stabilise your movements. If you start off with a wildly unbalanced camera, the motors will be working overtime, which could have a negative effect on your movements, and it won't stabilise quite so efficiently. That could also result in faster battery drain, or possibly even burn out the motors quicker. I'd suggest balancing it as closely to it's centre as your patience allows and then letting the motors kick in to pick up the slack. Also, make sure to balance with the lens cap off. It seems simple, but it's very easy to forget.
  20. There's no LUT applied, these were straight out the camera. I thought I shot in FILM mode, but now looking at the files, I'm doubting that, and can't find any clues in the metadata.
  21. True, but every word on that brochure has been carefully crafted and checked by people who do. Also, it'd be very strange to hold the event and then not release it... but as other have said, it's BMD, so who knows - we can only hope.
  22. Meike make super cheap all manual lenses with click-less aperture. I have their 28mm f2.8 on my GX80 95% I’d the time and consistently get nice shots with it. Of course being manual they also work with the p4k
  23. That's why I'm wondering if there's one the size of an AAA battery a sits inline. It'll add only a touch of weight. The Saramonic, or the ones you've mentioned, can also be velcrod to the underside of the camera, so the size addition would be minimal. Thanks for the help, really appreciate it.
  24. I'm trying to keep the kit small for some hand held stuff. So while I do have the VMP, which has it's own preamp, I'd like to only use the micro. The headphone amplifiers you mention look like they'll get the job done. I also saw this, for quite a bit more, but it comes with a lav, and has 2 inputs so could be nice.
