After a weekend playing with the GH5 and 2 years of the GH4 I am happy with my purchase. Did the improvements warrant the hefty cost and the upgrade in general? probably not for me, as I am just an enthusiast who loves filming family occassions and taking his camera around with him whereever he goes. I am sure all the fancy stuff under the hood would be more noticeable to those using the gh5 to its limits for paid work. I was looking mainly for stabilisation as most of my work is handheld, and this camera delivers on this in leaps and bounds, especially noticeble with non OIS lenses.
I purchased vlog and after some initial trials I am back to using standard profiles. I shot some standard footage over the weekend and showed it to my wife and mother in law , 10 bit 4k 150mb in standard profile and the first thing they both said is "wow look how amazing that looks...it feels like you are there!" Now these guys are not pixel peepers, and they watch my footage all the time and are used to high quality hd footage, but this change from the gh4 to gh5 was instantly noticeable to them, the humble viewer who normally wouldnt care if something was shot on an iphone or not!
Low light seems to be better as well, and with a bit of netvideo you can get really clean footage....
All in all if I hadnt have managed to sell my GH4 for £1000 I would not have been able to consider and\or afford the GH5. As it was though, it was a £700 purchase for me, I already had lenses so as it stands I am very happy!

    Not this shit again.
It's only a quarter size sensor if super 35 is a half size sensor and super 16 is a 1/8 size sensor.
Low light on this thing is actually pretty good - it's not the A7S but it's comparable to the A6300, A6500. Maybe a stop under, becoming noticeable as you get to the upper end of the ISO range.

Only in terms of depth of field, but if you see the sensor size as a potential advantage that allows you deeper DOF for the same level of light transmission, then that can be an advantage. There's also a (admittedly very expensive) 7-14 2.8 lens from an Olympus, and a 7.5mm F2 manual focus almost-pancake from Laowa launches shortly. If you want to work with Speed Boosters a ' FF 18mm F1.8' is attainable with a 14mm 2.8 and a Speed Booster XL. But how often do you shoot at Ultra wide? There are a bunch of fast options for M43 from the 20mm on full frame and upward.
I guess it just depends on what you're using it for. You have a point that the auto focus is weak vs the competition, and also about the body getting a bit big for micro 4/3.  I think that's preferable to a too small body that overheats. I'm guessing that the IBIS, 10 bit, high frame rates, etc necessitated a size increase from the GH4, along with the professional features they've added (HDMI and dual SD slots).
If you're all about low light, a Canon cinema EOS or Sony A7s makes much more sense.

No, that is not what I said. I said 'if this were being used to demonstrate the AF of the camera....". Obviously it was not shot with AF or it would be deemed the worst AF ever seen in a camera. What's amusing to me is that some people complain about AF misses when a camera is used in that mode, but yet when it's done deliberately, it's just super.
Further, if I wasn't clear in what I was saying, it's quite different saying you don't like the 'technique' used (which is what I was saying) as opposed to not liking the quality of the clips that comprise the video. Often we can see beyond 'technique' if it's not to our taste, when assessing the quality of the camera.
Finally, to infer from my post, "they know something we don't know therefore they're smarter and better than you." is so far beyond a stretch, it almost leaves me breathless.
How is this not subjective? You think it's the nicest looking GH5 footage, and of course you're entitled to that opinion, but does that mean everyone in the world must think that too? I just don't get some of the comments here. It's kind of like 'my way or the highway'.

Just imagine the A7*** series or A6300/A6500 cameras that begin dimming as soon as you press record!
I agree part of it may be a concern for OLED burn-in, but I also wonder if part of it isn't due to a concern over overheating.

I guess it's just me that's not a fan of this in & out focus technique, sudden jerky movements that seem to be senseless and a grading that just doesn't seem right. In fact, if this were being used to demonstrate the AF of the camera, most people would say, "when is the GH6 coming out?".
It just shows you how much subjectivity there is in these videos.

Long time GH4 user here...I was GH5 hesitant at first...BUT I Gotta say, I have recently seen a few GH5 vids on vimeo and youtube that have blown me away.
The GH5 Welder video for example the colors are just great, some of the best I have seen...many people in the comments too have stated that they cant believe this was done on a GH5, to me they are very Alexa like.
Another I saw recently, just a sunset, no special postwork or anything, but I swear tho the colors ...I could never get those out of the GH4,and I am pretty proficient in Premiere and using Lumetri.
There is something about the colors that is really special, not too over the top, but far more dimension than the GH4, and I have seen some pretty decent skin tones too.
All in all this camera seems to be able to do me for several years,Just need to sell a few things, I cant wait to get one.

Time to spend some quality time with the Panasonic GH5.
The wait is over and 3 years after the GH4 we have the highly anticipated new camera. In some ways an evolution but mostly, I'm glad to say a revolution.

Very true, but I would sure like the option of being able to control it IF I don't want it, and on interviews you are right, it can be a Big distraction.

Jon, I wouldn't be concerned about facial detail on the GH5. I've seen plenty of those posted already. I'm not sure what they did in that video that was posted of the couple, but it's obvious something deliberate was done to smear much of the texture. I think we need to take all the posted videos as an 'average'. Dwelling on any one video is bound to bring us to some erroneous conclusions.
BTW, who is that amazingly good looking guy in the top shot above?

Judging not only from other videos we've seen, but also the incorrectly applied preset in this video, I don't think we can use this video in any way to judge skin tones from the GH5.

Andrew, some of the 9/11 comments I've read in this thread are a particularly sensitive issue for me. I worked on the 100th floor of Tower 1, North side. My office was about 3-4 floors above ground zero where the first plane went in (despite what some conspiracy freaks think...I get physically ill with their comments). Why am I still here? I got a call at about 3PM, the day before, from a client. The client asked if I could attend a meeting the next morning on Long Island. She was very apologetic at the last minute nature of the request. I told her, 'no problem'. Had it not been for that phone call, I wouldn't be here. By the time I got to the client, the first plane had hit and the 2nd plane shortly thereafter. Once the Pentagon was hit I told the client "I'm outta here". Who knew if we were headed towards a world war? My son got home that day after school and ran hysterically into my arms, knowing how close he had gotten to losing his Dad. That night my HR department called my wife, thinking I was missing & probably dead. It was an incredibly emotional time.
For the next month, all I did was attend funerals of my co-workers who weren't so lucky. I can't even begin to tell you all the horror stories I'm aware of. One family was overjoyed because they had a kneecap to bury that was identified via DNA. Other families had nothing to bury, other than memories.
So when you talk security, it's a very sensitive issue for me. Anyone thinks that the U.S. goes overboard with security, is, IMO, clueless. Utterly clueless.
With that said, I agree with you, I am extremely concerned about the political ramifications of some of these intelligence agencies. I personally would fire Comey. He can't be trusted IMO and his almost schizophrenic behavior is a bit concerning. He can talk about one secret investigation but can't comment about another. Not the first time he's done something like that.
There are valid scientific reasons for why WTC7 went down. I'm really sorry this thread was ever started because the ignorance and obvious political biases are depressing.
