  1. I would really like some solid info on a potential GH6 as I'm at the point where I'm all in with M43 or it's L mount or another brand for me. The new M43 lenses, especially the 10-25 look great, but as it doesn't have IS I need a camera withe the GH5S' low light ability but with IBIS for the format to keep making sense for me. Without that info I could never invest 1700€ on a M43 lens. So I find myself in a kind of limbo (one which will resolved in the coming months) as I'm in a position to upgrade my gear.. but not totally sure where to go!

It makes me so sad to hear that Canon might give in to the conservatives that demand IBIS instead of innovation. Even though its an old, clunky and obsolete technology.

Innovation? Canon? They've heaps of innovation, they have just decided that now's not the time to share it. Wait a few years and you'll see!

You could record to a Tascam DR-10L which is one of the smallest recorders (you get dual backup recording as well, at -6db or -12db) and get the audio from the headphones output to the Go. That would make a very small and affordable recording solution, I can't think about a smaller recorder with dual recording. They already come with a lavalier, but if you already have a good ones you can sell them and it'll be cheaper. The tascam DR-10C comes without the mic and has a signal pass through but you can't get it in the US. For the budget you can't go wrong, I wouldn't trust on any affordable wireless transmitter receiver without a backup.

Actually you could just record the whole thing ONLY with the Tascam DR-10L but you wouldn't be able to monitor the audio. It's really small and you can clip it to a belt or whatever:

    dr10l_hand.JPG?width=1100&height=800&scale=both

The Tascam has failed me. Doesn't record anything. Seems like a problem with the mic connector. Others have had the same problem. I suppose if you are monitoring with a Rode that would help detect the problem.

Yes above that temporal filtering kicks in and messes around with the image.
I'd rather have more noise like on the Pocket 4K than a wobbly mess and trailing.

On the GH5 ISO800 was the max. ISO without it in the past. But now you can easily use ISO3200 without any issues.

Hopefully they'll fix that soon otherwise the camera is a no go. I was considering it as quite a lot of my work involved shooting in available light (1600-6400 iso). What a bummer along with the blue problem, looks like it is no good for event work (concerts, corporate, weddings).

Since firmware 2.0 on the GH5 the issues were gone.
Was shooting at ISO5000 even without any issues. Now I can only use up to ISO1600 :(

I have another shot at ISO6400 where the out of focus background is looking like it's floating around in slow motion, will upload that sample as well.
All caused by too much temporal noise reduction - it creates artifacts and only works when the image is static.

If I understand you, you are talking about the S1. You can only shoot cleanly up to 1600???

What are the likely quality differences going to be like shooting 4K at FF, S35, and pixel/pixel on this sensor?

Noise? Moire? Sharpness? Anything else likely to be affected?

Very interested in the S1 and S1H as S35 camera. Coming from the Canon C100 and having a GH5 with a Speedbooster as well as several Sigma EFS (apsc) lenses this seems the most cost effective root into new gear. I can afford a new camera but not a bunch o new lenses!

Really looking forward to hearing more about this.

  7. What I like about Panasonic is that their whole line up seems to work together, from the GX85 through the GH5, S1 upto the EVA1. I never had that with Canon. The C line was so much better than all the DSLRs (apart from a couple of really expensive ones). Much easier to justify investment.

I'd take the S1 over the GH5S sensor, already has IBIS, just need eND.

For me to go M43 I want to see 4k 120p as well as IBIS, good auto focus, and hopefully eND.

That's kind of my point. If M43 becomes super video orientated then I'm in. Not sure if the S1 can record 4k non stop

The GH5 is so dirt cheap secondhand, the GH6 will surely cost significantly more.

If you need a 2nd camera now then don't hesitate to buy a GH5! Is still fantastic value even in 2019

It's true the GH5 is cheap. I will probably need another camera to complement the GH5 by October. As it stands right now I'd probably get the GH5S as would cover low light as well.

Some of the work I do is setting up 2 or 3 static cameras to film a course, presentation etc. The Panasonics are great for this as they record for hours. Right now I'm using a GH5, a GX85 and usually hire another GH5/S if I need another camera. But with a job that is looking like it'll be confirmed soon, hiring makes no sense.

The GH5S is around 1950€ here, the GH5 1550€ and the S1 2500€ aprox. I think the GH5S is a bit over priced. I'm hoping it'll have a price drop in September

Now the P6K is with us, I think this changes the landscape a bit for the hotly anticipated cameras like GH6, A7Siii, etc.

From my own perspective, I think the following improvements over a GH5 would be 'enough' to sell a bunch of them:

    • Built-in ND that can be controlled by auto-exposure
Being able to set the camera to a set aperture, a set shutter speed, and then having auto-ISO and auto-ND control the exposure for me would be spectacular.
    • Higher bitrates / resolutions
This would be some combination of: RAW 4K, 6K 16:9, and "8K-like" 4:3 anamorphic mode.
    • Mix-and-match codecs and bitrates and framerates
Being able to choose from any combination of bitrate (eg. 100/150/200/300/400/600/800Mbps), and codec (H264/H265), and frame rate (1/2/4/7/10/23.976/24/25/30/50/60/HFR) that the hardware is capable of would be great.  Low framerates are great for time lapses or special effects too.
    • Better stabilisation
Not sure if better IBIS is possible, but adding a GoPro/OsmoPocket type EIS on top of IBIS would allow great SOOC clips in difficult situations.

For bonus points, having a removable mount so you can either have MFT and use adapters, or go EF or Nikon if you wanted to (and maybe a S35 sensor with the smarts to know what lens is attached and adapt appropriately).  Better low-light / dual-ISOs wouldn't go astray either.

The GH5 is a workhorse, so keeping the ergonomics and practicality / reliability but adding an ND, bumping up the image, and making it more customisable would be spectacular.

I am a very happy GH5 user, and when I look at the P4K I think "No thanks, I don't want the huge data rates of RAW, but I do need IBIS", and when I look at the P6K I think "No thanks, I almost have 6K, but I do need IBIS".  The GH5 was released in early-2017 and is still winning against late-2019 cameras.  Assuming that the GH6 is released early-2020 and needs to still be winning against late-2022 cameras, it will need these things, although they're not out of reach technically, it just needs a company willing to put them all into a camera, and Panasonic has a track record of that.

Sounds good. I think having magnification to check focus when recording as well as more accurate battery levels would be a great help. GH5s low light at least.
