  1. I'm interested to know what the FF Panasonic will offer and how practical it will be.

I have a GH5 (also a Canon C100 among other cameras) and as someone who 95% of the time is shooting video I think the GH5 is great and I'd need something really special right now to leave it. As a cheapish video camera it is great. I have shot whole day confrences with the GH5 as a main static camera plugged into the mic desk (xlr unit is great) and a GX85 handheld doing cutaways. Light, efficient, reliable...great. I have a client here who works with football players in La Liga. He was used to people who turned up with a Canon DSLR or a Sony and would hand in wobbly Making Of fashion shoot videos and static interviews. Now I know it's not all down to the cameras but the Panasonics were a big part in being able to win over the client. Run n gun video done with little fuss, very discrete. Interviews with one camera that gives us reframing options, good sound and no cuts....my client likes that!

I'll be trying a GH5S this weekend to see how well it complements the GH5. They are great video cameras (not perfect) that can take good photos. If you need and all terrain video centric mirrorless then I can't see past them at the moment.

In saying that, bring on the innovation!

  2. I still use the GX85 as a B or C cam with the GH5. I bought from Hong Kong and it has no recording limit. It keeps going until the card or battery run out. I also bought a dummy battery with a DC connector. Very cheap, small but quality 4K cam. One of my best buys ever even if the sound is rubbish. If sound is important get one of the 2 Sennheiser kits with the mic and recorder and just sync up.

  3. Anyone using 200mbps all-i 422 HD with GH5?

I have used the GH5 with 4K for over a year (corporate, video clips, weddings, etc) but I always deliver HD. I saw a couple of videos using the new 200mbps all-i 422 HD. Some look very good but I have noticed moiré some HD footage (could just be the horrible jacket someone wore at an event). Is anyone using it? What are your results like?

I really like the idea of 422 50p and the in camera zoom/crop effect (whatever it's called) in HD is even more powerful than in 4K.

Playing with grading to be more canonesque... GH5 and SLR Magic 10mm.

Very nice. Do you have other SLR Magic lenses? How do they perform? I have the older 12mm T1.6. How did you get the Canonish look out of the GH5?

    Thanks!

So, I think that comparing Voigts with cheaper FF lenses just because of simple dof mathematic is not quite correct - besides, there are also cheaper m43 solutions such as Mitakon or even SLR Magic with more players just in the game - Laowa or so.

The Mitakons lack wider options 17, 12, 10mm.

The SLR Magics wider lenses are not so fast. 17mm T1.6, 12mm T1.6 and 10mm T2.1.

Voigtlander is the only brand with a range of lenses that are really fast across the whole range. All are 0.95. But they are very expensive and to buy all 4 here in Spain you are talking about 4000€!!!

  6. Jon, I don't want to argue with you or anyone but I think you need to be aware that sometimes the tone of your posts come across as rude and condescending. I realise that's probably not your intention but maybe worth reflecting on.

Don’t worry, sry I ever suggested a 5” external monitor. Enjoy your life!

  7. Hi Kieran,

lowlight is a problem for me. I have a Voigtlander 25mm 0.95 which is light enough and works well enough in lowlight but I would need to buy the 10.5mm, 17.5mm and 42.5mm lenses as well to have a decent range and that's over 3000€ here!

The Lumix lenses are just too slow or have horrible MF and the fast Olympus lenses are as much as the Voigtlanders! That's a lot of money to spend on a M43 system when you add in that the GH5 and the XLR unit cost me around 2400€, there you have to add the cards, hard drives...

    It's a tough one.

  8. Thanks for the replies!

I had been using the C100 mk1 (without DPAF) for a while for weddings and corporate work. It's a lovely camera but it has a poor LCD and a minuscule EVF but the magnification whilst filming resolves a lot of problems but not all. After a couple of years I found it a bit heavy, especially on a wedding shoot (12 hours here). I bought the GH5 to go lighter and handheld. I use Canon APSC lenses with a speedbooster (Sigma 18-35 and 50-150 and I have the 18-135 and a 17-50) so lenses are not so much of a problem. The problem is that the GH5 is now becoming quite heavy and if I add a SmallHD Focus it will have become larger and heavier than the C100! The 4k is nice in the GH5 though.

I still have a Canon C100 mk1 although it needs the XLRs repaired and that seems to mean sending it to Germany from Spain and will be expensive. I suppose a SmallHD focus would improve both cameras but I really want to go light.

The LCD screen has worse resolution than the EVF. I tried another loupe but it was quite a bit worse for manual focusing than using the viewfinder.

For critical work, the LCD is useless.

Hmm...I worried that this might be the case.

I might have to really consider selling the GH5 and buying a second hand Canon C100 mk2. As I get older (43 at the moment) I find that my eyes get more tired on long shoots. I'm realling beginning to miss being able to punch in to check focus when filming as well as accurate one touch autofocus

  10. Anyone tried the Vary-i loupe for the GH5? Does it make focussing easier? Whilst the EVF is very good my eyes get tired using it for long period and I find holding the camera up to my face a bit uncomfortable. Even with the focus peaking I sometimes find the GH5 hard to really nail focus in certain lighting conditions.

    Vary-i loupe

I used to have a similar one for the Canon 700D back in the day. I always found it to be very comfortable to use, especially during long days of run'n'gun shooting like weddings and corporate events.

  11. Voigtlander vs SLR Magic:

I have the 25mm 0.95 Voigtlander and it's amazing. Only thing is it has a bit of bloom wide open but it's useable for video. The image is lovely.

The SLR Magic 12mm T1.6 is nice enough and a lot cheaper. It has a natural look (not like the Lumix lenses) and is a bit warmer than the Voigt. It's a bit harder to focus as well. What I really feel is that T1.6 is not fast enough for me at times on the GH5.

    M43 vs APSC/FF

I have the GH5, a Speedbooster Ultra and the Sigma 18-35mmm 1.8 (1.2 with the Speedbooster) and there are good things to say about the combo. What I really like is the IBIS as it means I can go handheld in run'n'gun situations. The 4K 10bit and 4K 50p are great and give a lot of flexibility in post (edited in 1080p).

But....it has 4 weaknesses for me for video. Coming from a Canon C100 mk1, the GH5 really isn't great in lowlight. With the same Sigma lens I could go to 6400-8000 iso with the Canon and with the GH5 it's pushing it at 3200. Whilst the Voigtlander improves things I don't feel it's able to really compete. Another problem is focussing. The LCD and EVF are miles better in the GH5 but being able to punch in to check focus is a godsend in the C100. In the GH5 if you haven't nailed it you are punished (we won't even go into AF!). Ergonomics is another issue. The GH5 is a vast improvement over the Canon DSLRs I have used before but on a C100 everything is in the right place and works. I now find myself thinking about buying a loupe (Vary-i) or mini rig for the GH5 which is not why I bought it! I wanted to go lighter! The other thing I notice is that somehow (voodoo?) the small Canon (WDR) files seem to have far more dynamic range than the GH5 (even 10bit). The Canon is somehow able to make the image work and handles complicated lighting (colour temp or lack of light) much better. At least that's my opinion!

So last night I got very little sleep as I contemplated selling the GH5 and buying a C100mk2!

    Why o why hasn't Canon produced a 4k 50p C100 mk3!!!

May I ask - have you ever shot with a camera that had IBIS?

Yes, I have the GH5 and the GX85. I also have the Canon C100 and Canon lenses.

I really like the IBIS on the Panasonic cameras but I have had some situations where the GH5 lacks lowlight ability, even with the Speedbooster and the Sigma 18-35 F1.8 (1.2) and the Voigtlander f0.95. There are ocasional situations when I need 6400-10000 ISO. Mainly events where it's impossible to light. I like to go light so I'd prefer a GH5 to my Canon C100 (a camera which I love but it's heavy and an awkward shape to stick in a backpack). So I'm wondering whether the GH5s with a Speedbooster and Canon f2.8 (f2) zoom lenses with IS would be better in lowlight than the GH5 with the Speedbooster and the Sigma f1.8 (1.2) zooms. I'm aware that in lens IS is not as smooth as IBIS but I have a lot of experience shooting handheld with a lens with IS and it's doable (but not as enjoyable as IBIS!). As an event shooter that would be an interesting test to see as far as I'm concerned.

    true.

Original question: Am I right in saying that the IS in Canon lenses will work with a speedbooster?

Gh5s: So maybe the Canon 17-55 2.8 with IS with the 0.71 Speedbooster might make a good match and make up for the lack of IBIS handheld? I have no idea what focal range becomes! 22-65mm? F2? I also have a Canon 18-135 3.5-5.6 IS which would be a 24-150? F2.8-4??

Dunno if it's worth while compared to the Gh5 with the Sigma 18-35 for low light. It would be interesting to see.

So here's my quick prediction (just based on the same bits and pieces as everyone else).

Low resolution sensor (but not the super low-light starvis thingy).

An improvement in low-light over the GH5 of around 2 stops.

A sensor dedicated Log profile (V-log or variant, but not shackled like V-log-L)

    No IBIS

    No ND

Some additional exposure tools (perhaps false colour)

Personally, I'd be happy enough with that.  They would have my money.

If they keep IBIS then yes.
