  1. If the GH6 comes out soon and is as good we all hope it to be (and as the GH5 has been) then I'm all in with Panasonic the next few years. The GH5 is great but it's showing it's age when it comes to lowlight.  Anyone think the GH6 might do 6k 25p?

Had this a couple of times with SD cards that had a lot of clips on them.

Seemed more related to the amount of clips rather than the capacity used by them.

I would say that was my experience too. It became worse as the day went on. Is that the same with CFast and SSD?

verry interesting. I haven't updated any of my cameras yet since we are in the middle of wedding season. But all of our bm (2 p4k and 1 p6k) has been really reliable so far. We use npf plate and t5 ssd on all of them and none has any shut down issue. I have found if the ssd is more than 3/4 full, it takes a lot longer to read.

The playback thing is the same with every bm camera so it's not a bug.

I didn't realise the playback was like that. It sure gave me a fright!!!

  4. I had my first experience with the Bmpcc4k. Rented one and took it to a friend's wedding to see how it stood up. I had barely anytime to get to know the camera so there will be user errors. I've yet to see the images as what I really wanted to check was reliability and handling.

Good things first: actually feels very nice in the hand, menus nice, recording individual sound on each channel, once I'd pumped up the brightness on the screen it was nice to use.

Bad things: wtf, so unreliable. Shut off 4 times although connected to external battery and internal. At one moment it would only record clips of one second then stop. Then it started recording normally again. It took an age to start up and even longer to read the SD to be ready to record (nearly 2 mins!). I tried 4k 50p and 2.6k 50p to see if that helped but no. Another weird thing is when watch the clips in playback it would only show the clips recorded in the same settings as the came was at at that moment (4k, could only review 4k. 2.6k could only review 2.6k).

The rental place is reliable and always want feedback from their clients. I was the first to use the camera after the new firmware was installed. It could be that. The SD card (v90) had never had problems before with the camera according to them.

So was that just a freak shitty experience or does that kind of stuff happen a lot?

  5. I had been thinking about a GH5S to accompany my GH5 and help with low light situacions but now I'm wondering whether it'd be better getting a GH5S and a S1H. I shoot a range of things, events, interviews, promo videos, conferences, weddings. I really like the ability to record for hours with the GH5 but recently I've been finding more and more dark venues and it isn't cutting it. I have also bought the 10-25 1.7 but after using it for a few weeks I'm thinking about selling it as the Sigma 18-35 with the speedbooster looks better in my eyes and is easier to manual focus. I shoot a lot of 4k 50p which I believe is Apsc on the S1H. I have a few Apsc lenses which should be fine for that (sigmas 18-35 1.8, 50-150 2.8, Canon 18-135 and Tokina 11-16 2.8). I guess if i accept that I will use an adaptor on both cameras then they should pair well. I'm selling my C100 and some lenses I don't use so If i were to sell my mft lensrs as well I could probably afford to do it (only forking out 1000-1500). Does that sound a logical choice? Anyone using those 2 cameras together? How does the S1H fair as a apsc 4k 50p camera? How does the Sigma adaptor handle efs lenses? Is it any good for photo autofocus (I principally shoot video but once in a while I have to shoot some photos as well.

  6. When I was using the canon C100 I mainly used the Canon 18-135mm f3.5-5.6 and the Sigma 18-35mm f1.8. If I needed wider my business partner (photographer) would lend me his Tokina 11-16mm. I also have a Sigma 50-150mm 2.8 which covers everything!

Since getting the GH5 a couple of years ago I've mainly being using the Sigma 18-35 and 50-150 with a Speedbooster. But sometimes I use the Voigtlanders 17.5 and 25 and an Slr Magic 12mm 1.6. But since hiring an Olympus 12-40 2.8 I've decided that I really prefer native and going lightweight. So today I'll pick up the 10-25mm 1.7 and I'm considering the Olympus 12-100mm f4, 12-40 2.8. I'd love a longer lens like the 10-25. Maybe 35-90mm f1.7 or 2 (but constant).

True, but some people are after better low-light rather than shallow DoF.  In this sense, MFT is better than FF because an MFT lens at F1.4 will have an exposure around T1.4 and the DoF equivalent of a FF F2.8 lens, whereas the FF lens at F1.4 will have an exposure around T1.4 and the DoF of an F1.4 lens.  This means that (ISO performance being equal, which is another whole topic) the MFT lens will have a deeper DoF than the FF equivalent lens at the same exposure, or you can stop down the FF lens to match the DoF but now you need a higher ISO on the camera.

This is why people say that FF lenses are harder to focus manually, it's because if you match exposure values then the FF lens has a much thinner DoF than cropped sensors.  In low-light this is an advantage of MFT lenses over FF.

This is important. It's not so much dof (the Voigtlanders offer that anyway) but general low light performance that I think many people are after. If the camera has good lowlight you can then use the lens of your choice rather than being forced to use the Voigtlanders or Speedboosted lenses.

No, the 50-200 is harder to manually focus for me. I really wish Panasonic would add linear focus by wire support like the S1. The 10-25 has much better control with the focus clutch for whatever reason.

Well Panasonic has shown it can do IBIS with dual gain sensor tech in a full frame. So, they would be smart to try for that in the GH6.

I love my GH5S. If I had an option to get GH5S with IBIS as a second camera...I'd be all over it.

    Exactly my thoughts.

The 10-25 1.7 has really opened up the possibilities for m43. But I think Panasonic needs to apply the same logic (manual focus clutch, aperture ring, etc) to it's flagship zoom lenses. This lens shows there is an appetite for larger faster zooms for m43. A 50-100 (or 35-100) f2 with a manual clutch and we are all smiling.

The problem with the GH5S is that there are no fast wider zooms with IS and a manual clutch (fly by wire is useless for run n gun video). Although the Olympus 12-100 f4 IS could be interesting. I wish their 12-40 had IS. It's a very nice lens.

DZOfilm has announced two new MFT Cine lenses: 10-24mm and 20-70mm T2.9

http://en.dzofilm.com/https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC8Cndtgz0OGPG_A1mfNuPpA/videos Interesting for sure. Guess after Veydra MFT cinelenses aren't quite dead yet!

-- Awh yeah, I thought DZO sounded familiar, they kinda showed it as a prototype during NAB earlier saying 'around $1700' (might go check em out on last day of IBC)

-- Speaking of lenses. Picked up the illusive Leica 10-25mm constant f/1.7 today for €1794,10 (bit of a deal, fresh on the market, normal/current retail: €1999), curious to try it out! Here's a good vid on that one:

How you finding the 10-25 1.7? Does it focus as well manually as the Sigma 18-35?

Well, it’ll cost you more than $1799 to pickup a S1H and an L mount lens.

I have the 10-25 f1.7. It’s a brilliant lens. It will be even more brilliant on a future GH6.

If the GH6 has as good lowlight ability as the GH5S then it’s going to be a huge hit as long as it carries on the GH5 tradition.

I shot some video of some Elk a couple of days ago. It was dusk, approaching blue hour. I had my 50-200 f2.8-4. I was shooting at 200mm f4 at ISO 10000 and 12800 in 10bit HLG. The noise performance was more than acceptable. I lost a bit of color vitality but it was dusk so it really didn’t matter.

The 4K footage downsampled to 1080p didn’t need any noise reduction at all. If I was to keep it at 4K I would have applied noise reduction to some of the clips at 12800. The images were more than useable.

I switched out to the 10-25 for some environment shots at at f1.7 I could drop my ISO to 2500-3200 which is a piece of cake for the GH5S.

Are both the lenses you mentioned good for accurate manual focus?

Now is a difficult time as with S1 and S1H there aren't so many lenses and with MFT the future isn't so clear.  If you can possibly hold off then that would be the smart move..

Yeah. But sometimes (in my case dues to tax reasons and older gear not being used) the time has come! Previously I had waited for canon to produce a reasonable b cam for my C100 and it never came (the XC10 just failing due to lowlight). Switched to GH5 and have enjoyed the experience (other than file size and extreme lowlight). Need a new A cam for my GH5

  12. I would really like some solid info on a potential GH6 as I'm at the point where I'm all in with M43 or it's L mount or another brand for me. The new M43 lenses, especially the 10-25 look great, but as it doesn't have IS I need a camera withe the GH5S' low light ability but with IBIS for the format to keep making sense for me. Without that info I could never invest 1700€ on a M43 lens. So I find myself in a kind of limbo (one which will resolved in the coming months) as I'm in a position to upgrade my gear.. but not totally sure where to go!

It makes me so sad to hear that Canon might give in to the conservatives that demand IBIS instead of innovation. Even though its an old, clunky and obsolete technology.

Innovation? Canon? They've heaps of innovation, they have just decided that now's not the time to share it. Wait a few years and you'll see!

You could record to a Tascam DR-10L which is one of the smallest recorders (you get dual backup recording as well, at -6db or -12db) and get the audio from the headphones output to the Go. That would make a very small and affordable recording solution, I can't think about a smaller recorder with dual recording. They already come with a lavalier, but if you already have a good ones you can sell them and it'll be cheaper. The tascam DR-10C comes without the mic and has a signal pass through but you can't get it in the US. For the budget you can't go wrong, I wouldn't trust on any affordable wireless transmitter receiver without a backup.

Actually you could just record the whole thing ONLY with the Tascam DR-10L but you wouldn't be able to monitor the audio. It's really small and you can clip it to a belt or whatever:

    dr10l_hand.JPG?width=1100&height=800&scale=both

The Tascam has failed me. Doesn't record anything. Seems like a problem with the mic connector. Others have had the same problem. I suppose if you are monitoring with a Rode that would help detect the problem.

Yes above that temporal filtering kicks in and messes around with the image.
I'd rather have more noise like on the Pocket 4K than a wobbly mess and trailing.

On the GH5 ISO800 was the max. ISO without it in the past. But now you can easily use ISO3200 without any issues.

Hopefully they'll fix that soon otherwise the camera is a no go. I was considering it as quite a lot of my work involved shooting in available light (1600-6400 iso). What a bummer along with the blue problem, looks like it is no good for event work (concerts, corporate, weddings).

Since firmware 2.0 on the GH5 the issues were gone.
Was shooting at ISO5000 even without any issues. Now I can only use up to ISO1600 :(

I have another shot at ISO6400 where the out of focus background is looking like it's floating around in slow motion, will upload that sample as well.
All caused by too much temporal noise reduction - it creates artifacts and only works when the image is static.

If I understand you, you are talking about the S1. You can only shoot cleanly up to 1600???
