  1. Mattias, do you think the Slider One could handle a Canon C100 and lens (say a Sigma 18-35 1.8) and get smooth shots? How do feel about the Slider one after various months with it. Thanks for your input, your reviews are always interesting and useful.

  2. I have been wondering about the settings too. I found that dialling down the NR made everything over 800iso very noisy and having to use Neat Video can get a bit tedious.

I've been thinking about using the custom settings and dialling things down in post a wee bit as it doesn't seem to be working for me the other way round.

It'd be interesting to hear different thoughts.

  3. Clearly there are huge imbalances and injustices through out the world. In the so called developed world many of the voters have simply switched off as far as politics is concerned. This is a huge problem as it leaves the door open for organised or even semi-organised extremists with narrow agendas (racism, fascism, religious groups, etc). This has been seen in recent votes in the UK, Colombia and the USA among others. Other democracies have been manipulated and attacked like in Turkey, Hungary and Poland. Media has played a huge part in twisting the truth and feeding people's worst impulses. How we deal with this is one of the great questions of our times.

We are at the end of an era, a system (neoliberalism) is in it's death throes. It has torn up and shat out the social order in place since the second world war as well as truly trashing the planet, all for some stupid tokens that we call money. Our problem is what comes next. The losers are fed up and angry, lashing out at anything or anyone that might be to blame. Whilst we have so many scientific means to understand the world, more and more people seem to be turning to the ignorance of extreme religious beliefs. Witness the power of the evangelicals in places like the USA and Colombia and Hindu and Islamic groups in Asia. Dangerous groups who have been thoroughly manipulated to believe absolute nonsense and who try to enforce those beliefs on others.

We can choose those that offer a change but a change for the worse like Trump, Farage, Le Pen or those who live in a world of anger like Uribe, Erdogan and Orbán, or we can take a step back and realise we have to change many things in our lives, the way we run our planet, how we treat each other, how we share what's left...What we really need is a positive movement that people can rally around because if not we are going to tear ourselves apart again.

  4. Far dues. Same goes in south west Europe!

I have a Canon C100 and it's great but sometimes it's just too heavy to lug about all day! I think we both use DSLRs in the same kind of low budget jobs that you get in these parts.

Usability, video quality and price will determine whether the GH5 (and MFT) can survive in this rapidly evolving and cut-throat market. I hope it really lives up to expectations and comes in under 2000€ as I really need a light weight alternative to the C100 ( and I have some lovely MFT glass!).

Plus, we are talking about thousands of euros, if someone is so interested in video, why spend 3-4000$ for a hybrid camera? Most in business, would prefer a real video camera, even if it hasn't 60fps/4K.

Don't forget that Canon C100ii is still selling very well and Canon has the XC15 out with 4K and all. If they put a 4K C100 out for 5000$ everyone is going to buy that one.

IBIS is another thing too. Most serious videographers use serious ones, when needed, and if... I am not against, but things that weren't even there a week ago, suddenly become a necessity amuses me a lot. If you do not have proper money (and if you are not a pro), a GX85 (or even better, the working G85) is pretty much perfect for most things and for most people (that they need something more than their iPhones), 3 and 4 thousands for a "similar" camera, is overkill in my opinion. Except if the true video cameras go to 10.000$ territory, and good buy video middle class, like it happens with the real middle class everywhere!

P.S 4K/60 and/or 10bit needs a lot of money on editing equipment as well.

There is a lot of snobbishness about equipment and a lot of nonsense talked about what makes someone a pro. A professional is a person engaged in a specified activity as a main paid occupation rather than as a pastime. It has nothing to do with what equipment he/she choses for each job. I have "pro" gear but I also use DSLRs when there is a need for light weight work. The IBIS on the GX85 has been very useful on occasions on some paid jobs. Horses for courses.

If the GH5 is as good as it sounds and sells for 2000€ then it'll be a very interesting camera for some professional work and a beast for hobbyists. What is true is that 4K/60 will be a bugger to edit on most people's present editing suites.

I don't have a mic yet, gonna pick one up this coming week. I can say the internal mic picks up on it and six inches away from your face it's quite noticeable. I doubt it will be a problem with an external mic but if it is I guess an editing program can catch the hissing easily.

Is a videomic pro the mic to get in that price range?

It shouldn't but you never know until you test it!

  7. I have the GX85 and with the NR turned down it does produce quite a bit of noise at 1600 and over. That can be tackled somewhat with Neat Video. I have never used the GH4 so I can only take people's word that it is worse.

Other than have a stop or so of better ISO the biggest plus for the GX85/G85 is the IBIS. If you want that flexibility to go handheld it really is worth it. On the downside with the GX85 you will need dual sound recording as the sound is awul!

Honestly, I get the best, quickest results using FilmConvert with the Panasonic cameras. With my settings, I usually only need a slight adjustment to the lows, mids and highs and if anything I lower the saturation... But again I find the saturation to be an unwieldy bitch with these cams. For the muted look I ultimately want, I could probably get by with a -4 saturation in camera.

What settings do you use in FilmConvert to 'tame ' the Panny look?

Agreed... not fair on so many levels. :)  Here's a quick look:

    Price: $2000 (XC10) vs $800 (GX85)

I think the discussion should probably stop there. The form-factors are way different too. The XC10 doesn't look like a hybrid video/photo camera at all IMO- just a video camera. I'm sure it has great ergonomics and I trust @Mattias Burling 's "5 Reasons to buy the XC10." The footage looks nice.

I disagree that the discussion should stop there. Once you buy 2 or 3 lenses and a variable ND the price of the GX85 is getting close to the XC10. Undoubtedly there are key differences like codec, sensor size, fixed lens or not, but for some they are legitimate competitors. Both are offering stabilised 4k and 50p HD in a small form factor. In my case the GX85 has unlimited recording times and doesn't overheat. The way I see it is that with the GX85 I'm dipping my toe into the m4/3 world to see how it compares to Canon. I prefer the Canon image but for the work I'm doing going light weight is a real bonus. Low light is very important for me and to compare the 2 is invaluable. I don't expect them to have the same capabilities as my C100 but they both interest me greatly.

  10. The C100 is a fantastic camera with a great image but lugging it about with a set of lenses and batteries for a live event is tiring.

I use wdr  as it suits my needs. I haven't used Clog as it hasn't been necessary. I used to have a G30 (I think it was a G30!) as well as a 700D but they just don't work cutting with a C100. The XC10 appeals as it should cut a whole lot better with the C100 but I worry about low light and DOF.

To see a few tests of how the GX85 and the XC10 compare would be most interesting. Testing colours, IBIS and iso limits would be very interesting for me and many others in the same boat. Both in HD and 4k. What are the limits for both cameras.

    Thanks!
