4K 60p 150 mbps doesn't play back smoothly at all in Resolve (free version) for me. I have a decent gaming laptop that I got in February of 2017. I've heard that the paid version handles h.264 better though?

Intel Core i7 7700HQ @ 2.80GHz, 16 GB of ram, and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 graphics card.

Haven't tried it on my main editing rig yet, I still haven't unpacked it after moving.

h264 is hw accelareted only in the paid version of resolve.

I manage some light grading also on c200 raw at 24 fps

Worst bullish I have seen in a long time. I liked this guy videos, but now I will be more carefull. T

    - First of all, the sharpness on the MP2 should be turned to +1 because they have turned down the digital sharpness compared to previous drone.
    - Secondly, the guy uses AF which is known to suck. Just go MF and click on infinity symbol and all your footages will look sharp and no focus issue. Someone tells him?
    - Third and MOST important: the diffraction on the MP2 is enormous past F5.6. Best sharpness is achieved at 2.8, and best corner sharpness at F/4. Sweet overall spot is F/4. Shoot in either manual either aperture priority and always between 2.8 and F4. I am sure the aperture was higher in his shot.

Do the 3 steps above, re-compare, and the guy will order again the Mavic. When you put out videos like this for the world and you are popular you should do the work properly.

Picture from the Pro 2 from this weekend. Shot in JPG.

Is this picture supposed to be a good example? Imo is not that great.. but I don't know the conditions that it was taken... there is no detail on it...

A somewhat similar picture form P4p (still not that great but better than the above):DJI_0098.thumb.jpg.fa834f015a0f2774c36c8a399a662f8a.jpg

  3. I remember when I brought the 1Dx II more than two years ago and a lot of people were saying when the Sony A7s III will come, when the G5 will come, when this and when that.... 2.5 years after if you need 4k 60p and great AF the 1Dx II is probably still the best choice. It is not perfect but is a great camera.
Considering that it is a 2.5 years old model I would try to find a used one instead of buying a new one...

    Pro:
    4k60p with great quality
    Super video AF
Solid codec 4:2:2 (funny that everybody is saying that the EOS R has fixed the codec but the ALL-I at 480Mbits is 4:2:0, I take the 1Dx II at 500Mbits 4:2:2, the addition of the 120mbits h264 is anyway welcome on the R)
    Very good rolling shutter
4k120p with AF (quality ok, not great)
    Super sports/actions camera for photo
    Very quick camera to operate

    Cons:
    No C-Log
    Expensive
CFcard for 4k60 are expensive but got cheaper lately
    Big and heavy
    No Zebra
    Fix LCD

If you do only video I think the C200 is a better buy but if you want a camera that does it all the 1Dx II is a solid choice (assuming that 4k60p and great video AF are key requirements)

Is this true? Sounds like a big fail ... I would think Andrew would have a field day with this one?

Not sure about the 5d IV but the 1Dx II, wich I own, will record movie on the card that is set for playback.  No paralell writing of movie. If you don’t trust me search the manual.

Not much sycophancy here...so perhaps you CAN be on speaking terms with companies, yet be critical nonetheless, mmm?
Jared Polin also was extensive in the video above.

No canon dslr can write video on two cards simultaneously..... so even with the 1Dx II he would have had the same issue

Canon DPAF is just overrated,Sony 4D PDAF is actually better, because it can work in 120P mode

If Canon DPAF is really better,Why can't it work in 120P mode or taking photo up to 10fps per second as Sony does?

Besides ,what affect the IQ most is sampling, not just code and bit rate

Panasonic 、Sony、Fuji 、even Nikon now do supersampling

Only Canon still stick to crop Pixel to Pixel  sampling video

On the Dpreview , the most soft 4K IQ is 5DIV, compare with its competitors

    PC1.png.bb4f75caf5aa3696412c5631df3d8273.png

Not to mention EOS R does not have focus peaking and Zebra, how could it be a working tool?

    Wait for ML hack again?

    LMAO

Canon DPAF can AF continuously at 120fps in the 1DxII, I use it many times.....

The main reason is to save space and exporting time on 4K jobs that are considered “mundane.” Long speeches, interviews, etc.

Not sure how you would save exporting time by converting to another format, Resolve is definitely faster with MJPEG than h264 content...
Saving space for archiving etc.. is another story and there h264 probably is probably the best as KinghtsFan has mentioned.
Now 200 mbits vs 500 mbits it is an important save but converting takes time and some works, so I simply buy more storage and I keep the MJPEG.

  8. Why you want to reencode? ... if you have a good enough machine you can edit MJPEG directly... If you want to save storage for conservation then h264 or h265 but to edit why somebody would convert to even bigger DNxHR 444 or ProRes 4444?

PS: I use a 1Dx II and edit MJPEG directly in Resolve, sometime even directly from the CFcard.

Just ordered one of these puppies. I checked it out a NAB, and it didn't seem overly heavy to me, and it seem really well made. The guys over at the DJI booth were really friendly also and answered all my questions... even when I speculated on what new products they might have coming. Not that the Tilta seemed bad, the DJI just had more of a next generation feel to it.

If you test it with the 1dx ii please report back

He absolutely can, he just needs to make sure he has virtually no motion blur in the footage, so he'd have to use a really high shutter speed, probably well over 1/250th.

From my experience Twixtor does not interpolate motion blur very well.

From what I saw from Twixtor so far I doubt that is possible to use it for sports movements.

I need to do something similar to this that was done in 2010 with a phantom flex:

I doubt golf, tennis, baseball can be faked with twixtor. Happy to be proved wrong

Given that you are going Full Canon, you are never going to get > 480 fps in FHD from Canon.

From my point of view, the best thing for Affordable HFR (> 480fps) is probably RX10 mark 2 or RX100 mark 5.

That or you Twixtor the b!tch out of 60p or better - I'm sure you can do it with your 1DX2 with its 120p mode.

I want an additional camera for super slowmotion. I’m not expecting a FF to have 500 fps.

I have a sport project where I need 480 fps or more. The sony rx the quality is to low. Best would be to rent a phantom flex but it is really expensive.

Chronos could be an option but also not cheap and hard to find. Rent would be good but here nobody has one.

240fps is still to low and almost the best quality is the iPhone X that I used from some early tests

  12. I have a 1dx II

    In addition I would love:
    C200
Compact mirrorless with 4k with great video AF compatible with canon lenses. Currently using an M5 but only fhd.
An affordable (renting would be better) HFR camera, ideally > 480 fps in FHD

  13. The 1Dx II is my primary camera for both still and video. I also own a 1Dx (mostly used as backup and remote camera) and a M5 for street and vacation photography.

The 1Dx II and the A7R III are very different cameras and IMO they are not target to the same user.

1Dx II is the one of the best action camera for both stills and video thanks to 4k60p + DPAF, also DPAF works at 120fps. But is not silent, is big and visible so not great for street photography. For me I miss only two thing: completely silent shutter and better 120fps or even 240fps FHD. C-Log would be nice too but I can live without.

The A7R III is a great landscape, portrait camera with good video but it will fail at any action where you need to track an athlete, dancer etc... the slideshow or simulate blackout whatever it is called is a real pain while shooting hfr and tracking somebody or something. The A9 would be a better camera for somebody trying to do action/sport/dance but need silent and a compact body for street photography. In the video department is for sure less powerful than the 1dx II. The A9 has also less DR than a 1Dx II in RAW.

Currently IMO there is not a perfect camera that can do anything from great video, to action photography, landscape, street, portrait etc..

I think you can cover most of your needs with a 1Dx II aside street photography and where a complete silent shutter is needed.

  14. Also a 1Dx II owner and for my usage for video I would never trade 4k 60p, 120fps and DPAF for C-Log and a better HD (super35). The rolling shutter of the 1Dx II is also better than the 1Dc. Most people that I know that went from 1dc to 1dx II they prefer the 1dx II due to better features.... If only canon would have added C-Log to the 1Dx II....

  15. Yeah, 24/25 fps with no DPAF with a 1.6 crop factor is not good at all.

The only good news that they can now do 4k h264 at 120 Mbits. Hopefully they can improve on the M5 II but I don't have too much hope now....

Currently cannon can read 4k 60fps with low rolling shutter but no oversampling (1dx II) with DPAF (even at 120fps fhd with DPAF).
They can do 120 Mbits 4k h264 but have to disable DPAF and max 25fps. Maybe is just thermal issues from the small body but I'm not sure....

Not really good news in the video front

  16. The Mavic Pro has basically only more fly time per battery and better radio signal. The rest the Air is better so I suppose in the next 3-6 months there will be an upgrade to Mavic Pro because there is basically no value on the Pro at the moment.... Ideally would be with a bit of a redesign to be able to host the P4p camera.

Other than the crappy WiFi radio the rest I think is a very good drone for hobbits. Personally I don't like the video and photo quality of the Mavic Pro but for hobbits is quite ok. I find the P4p the bare minimum of acceptable quality. Hopefully the next round of upgrade of the Mavic Pro and Phantom series (if not merged) would bring even better video/photo quality.

  17. It can be done with a Drone and is not that difficult but drones are less stable indoors than outdoor due to the lack of GPS signal. I have flown my DJI P4p many time indoors and if the indoor location is well illuminated is quite stable.
For indoor the smaller the drone the better it is, because it can be more easily maneuvered, make less noise and the most important part they are less dangerous. A smaller drone like DJI Spark (HD only) with propeller guards is probably the best one for the indoor shoot. DJI Mavic would also work but it would be already quite big to maneuver in such small height advantage is that is 4k but also you can buy a full cage for propellers so no risk to cut the face or finger of the actor.
Anyway I would not recommend flying so close over an actor head without a lot of experience. I would not buy a drone just for this shoot even if you need to redo it many times as Grimor said a Crane/JIb is way easier and safer and you can also record audio... drones indoors make tons of noise and some wind.

Outdoor any good drone will do the job but pay attention that every country has its own altitude limits. All DJI drones are capped at max 500m altitude from takeoff point, but in many countries the law limit is way below.

  18. I have the tiffen vari nd 82 and as other have mentioned it suffer from the x effect at maximum stop and it does not have hard stops that is a real pain. You simply bump the lens and it rotates so there is no way to fix the ND value. I would buy the Heliopan... buy the largest one that you need and some step down rings... it will not fit inside the hood of the smallest lenses...

  19. Andrew, are you sure that Filmic Pro can turn off both EIS and OIS? this would be cool because OIS doesn't play well with gimbals like the Osmo.... I read that on older iPhones you could not disable the OIS....

Filmic Pro is probably the best app right now but I'm very frustrated with it... the "manual" exposure control are quite bad IMO. First if you set let say 240 fps capture and it allows to go to 1/60... ISO cannot be really set but just biased and it does not really work well, on low light it may max out at 486 ISO but in day light you can go to 900 ISO.... really wired... Would be cool to be able to set shutter angle and let ISO float and use ND to correct if needed but I could not find a way.... You lock the shutter speed at 1/480 and you try to influence the iso with the bias and boom it changes back to 1/60 even if it is locked....

Also at the moment the framerate are all over the place... you set 240 capture and 240 playback I get a file that 200fps.... if I set 240 capture and 25 playback I get a 15 fps file....

Additionally if you save the file from filmic pro to the photo library is converting it from h265 to h264.... why?

Would be nice to know what is others experience because at the moment I cannot really trust this app....

So for me I really like the iPhone X and the cameras have potential but the apps are not there IMO, the default one is super limited that is almost embarrassing and Filmic Pro has potential but seems very buggy.

  20. My preferred one is the 24 1.4 with the 1Dx II it makes around 32mm... second best 50 1.2 and sometime I use the 16-35 but I prefer a bit longer and with more shallow dof.... a wide angle all in focus shoot looks too much iPhone/osmo video....

  21. A good 4 core i7 machine with a good gpu you can edit in realtime 4k 60p MJPEG in Resolve. Jcs stated the same for premiere. In case of Resolve you gain nothing in converting to prores.

If you search the forums you can see in which kind of HD it works...

  22. The main goal of the X7 is to be able to put a S35 sensor on a relatively small bird. Up until now for putting a S35 sized camera even a DSLR you needed a much bigger, heavier and dangerous drone. Also having an integrated camera + drone makes controlling both a much much easier task especially over distance...

To have such "small" drone lifting a S35+lens the main design goal was to keep it as light weight as possible especially the lenses. Did you see how small are the motors on the gimbal compared to Ronin MX or soo... One thing I'm disappointed is that any frame rate > 30 fps it is using a crop of the sensor "narrow" and also no mention other than the intro video how the AF works, MF apparently can be done with a follow focus wheel attached to the remote or via touch screen slider. I see the compelling idea of an Osmo solution with this camera but I think the main desing goal was really a drone first camera. Osmo would need to be quite big to accommodate the cpu, cinessd, battery....
