  1. It is more a 4.1 version than a 5, but some good refinements:

    - Mics with integrated wind shields, on my X4 I use the velcro wind muffle but they are quite bad and I lose them often. From the reviews audio in windy conditions seems much improved but who trust reviewers nowadays...

    - Replaceable lens, I never scratched mine but I got very close a few times.

    - Finally a quick release mount!

    - Pure view + larger sensor, curious to test this with MTB as the X4 needs really good light to work, already in daylight in the forest the X4 breaks a part.

They now have also an external mic but nobody is speaking about.... unfortunately it does not seems like the DJI Mic 2 and Osmo Pocket 3 that can do 32 float internal in the transmitter while sending good quality to the Pocket 3.
Insta360 X4 Bluetooth mic just sucks, not sure something has changed in the X5 and if the new Insta360 Mic Air is a normal Bluetooth Mic then is a big miss.

  2. Really impressive and cool.

The only thing that bothered me is the slow panning back and forth between actors when they were talking because they did not want to use two cameras and have cuts (breaking the one take choice). I started to notice and then it become more bothersome. I find a bit unnatural, as a human you would quickly switch your look to who is speaking and not this slow switch.

Makes me even more tempted to get the little 1" sensor DJI Osmo Pocket 3

Honestly, most of what we look at is indeed overkill for our true needs, and smaller and simpler equipment can get the job done.

I have the movmax + insulator version that came out before. I use it for Cars and MTB

Yeah the AF appears next-level, not sure  if the R5 ii has face-only AF from the cine line though?

Yes, R5 II has the setting for Face priority and Face only. In term of AF (other than having peeking on while AF is on) R5 II can do all the R5c and much more. One of the key features that I use a lot is that you can size and position your AF area where you want. Another one is that you can load a face of the person you want to AF on and it works quite well, at first I thought it was a gimmick but in a group of people it works quite well.

Hey have you read my questions above? Really curious about your take on 4K60p SRAW. I've played with test footage and found that reducing the default sharpness setting from 10 to under 3 seems to get rid of any moiré issues and still leaves a much more detailed image than the soft HEVC 4K60p. I'm overall quite impressed with the R5 mk2 footage I've downloaded, especially Clog2. Skin tones are so much more natural and DR a lot less crushed than every Clog3 footage I've had previously. Gives a way more filmic image and nuance to grading. That said R5C in RAW does give Clog2 option although I haven't played with that footage. Anything else you miss or recommend vs R5C (aside from WFM on/off!)?

R5 II RAW CLog2 is a better image than R5c RAW CLog2. Imo on the R5c CLog2 does not really give you anything more than Clog3 other than matching to other Clog2 cameras.

It wasn't me testing out SRAW, I'm a big fan of 8k so I never used SRAW and probably will not if future, but if they would add SRAW for 4k 120 fps and 2k 240fps then I will be super happy.

For my usage (sports, actions) the AF is a quantum leap compared to both R5 and R5c but if you do more "normal" stuff not sure it makes such a difference.

I really only miss the WFM on/off but happy to trade this with the C1, C2 and C3 that is such a time saver for me especially for going from normal to HFR. I do miss a bit but not a big issue peaking while AF on.... as it helps me judging if the AF is doing his work. The movie playback on the R5c is also a bit nicer but are really small details.

If you shoot RAW the R5c battery is still miserable as also when you are not shooting is consuming the same amount. Just one recurring example, Ice Hockey match, camera is on for 1.5h in 3x30min periods and I record around 10-12 min per period, R5 II I have 50% battery left, R5c I need to change battery at least once.

Is the R5 II better than the R5c, for my use absolutely. Is it worth the difference in price used R5c vs new R5 II? It is a harder question to answer as the R5c is very capable and now at a good price and with the new battery it solves the biggest issue that I had.

    *bump*

im thinking abt getting an r5 ii, but reading this thread, WOW have there been issues -- so sorry u guys have had to deal w returning cameras/etc, what a nightmare

how are things going at the moment? have firmware updates worked the bugs out? whats the latest?

    hi btw lol 👋🏻

I have two R5 II and the first firmware fixed my issue, and since then they are super stable no more issues. Very happy with mines.

Now Canon please just make the waveform on/off assignable to a button.

I use the Kondor Blue brand which is great but has a 'quirk' in that when you initially connect it, you need to wait 90 secs or more before you actually turn the camera on. It seems like its a safety measure that allows it to acclimate to the R5C's powering needs w/o blowing the circuits (???). But once you've done that you can turn the cam off/on as much as you want - however, if you disconnect the D-tap from the cam for 90 secs or more, you have to repeat the initial process of connecting and waiting 90 secs, again. Aside from that the Kondor Blue brand has been fantastic and I have two of their D-taps now.

All that said, I actually no longer use the D-tap/dummy battery option anymore because Canon's new LP-E6P batteries give you 90 mins on a charge and 3 hours with the OEM grip. So I plan to get 4 or 5 of these new batteries which should be able to last an entire shoot. Particularly if you have a basic remote battery charging strategy (like two portable USB-C chargers connected to a powerbank). The other reason I have moved away from D-tap (and USB-C powering for that matter) is there is still a chance that a faulty cord or something can fry/damage your cam. Using LP-E6P batteries guarantees that will never happen.

Anyways hope this helps and good luck!

    https://kondorblue.com/products/d-tap-to-canon-lpe6-dummy-battery-cable?srsltid=AfmBOor5C5INM2K10rRTMNEXPh0WihRDU0zMYj4UPBkMwHmdOKIm-4Uy

This is wired I used exactly the same d-tap adapter for 2 years with my R5c and never had this 90 second issue, is just immediate. I use it with FXLION Nano One batteries.

Never the less Canon should do an official dtap dummy batter that mimics the EP-E6P.

I now moved to two R5II but if I would still be having a R5c I would simply move to EP-E6P and for really long stuff use the USB-C.

PS: it is great that Canon made the R5c work with the new battery it really removes the biggest issue I had with the camera.

  8. Since the FW update mine works flawlessly, no issue at all. Since the new FW I shoot 3 horse showjumping competitions, two MTB events and 11 Pro Ice Hockey matches and not a single glitch.

I finally received my second R5 II (it took two months here in Switzerland to get it 😮) and sold my beloved R5c.

Now please Canon just add a way to turn Waveform on and off with a button!!!!!

Well all of my shoots got cancelled for this week due to the inbound hurricane, so hopefully some of that gets rescheduled and I can test out the new body and FW before my exchange window ends.

I suspect you are right and I think I had HW problems as well; I was getting pretty bad IBIS wobble at 24mm with the first body, the image would have been unusable at 14mm.  I don't know about auto WB performance, I've never used it for video and stopped using it for photos as well, when I don't have the C70 with me I use the expo disc, if I have the C70 with me I just use AWB to get a reading then hard code it into all of my cameras for that scene. It's annoying that the R5II won't show you the AWB values it has selected unlike the C70. It won't even show the WB values when playing back an image.

I do know that it has some options on how to control the auto WB behavior, maybe one of the settings will help its performance.

BH supposedly has the R5II in stock again, they might ship to Switzerland.

Hope the hurricane will not hit bad.

Ordering through BH is an option and the total cost is about the same as here but when I resell, not sure why people, want to see that it was brought in Switzerland even if is a 4 year old body with no warranty.

Auto WB is not a major issue for me as I mostly shoot RAW, but I did notice that between "takes" especially on the ice arena is inconsistent something that the R5c is not. I will use the preset when using 10bit formats just to be on the safe side.

I got my replacement body yesterday and updated it to the latest FW, it looks like that feature you mentioned is on by default so it was on with my last body that was draining the batteries so fast.

One thing I immediately noticed though and it's not documented anywhere in the release notes is a big improvement in IBIS, either something was wrong with IBIS in the other body, or the FW update made some IBIS changes because it is way smoother than before.

It still has the annoying message "Mode movie still switching" when trying to playback images/video. I have shoots coming up for most of next week so I will see if any of the other problems are fixed as well.

Supposedly another FW release is coming this month so it really sounds like Canon rushed this one out the door with a plan to fix all of the problems later at the expense of their customers.

It seems that your first one had some hw issue on top of the bugs.

I tested IBIS with the old FW at 14mm (IS lens) and 16mm (no IS lens) handheld fast panning, slow panning, tilting and twisting and I could not see the same wobble issue that the R5 had. If is still there very much improved.

Since updating to the new FW I have shot 2 more hockey matches and 1 additional show jumping competition, and I did not encounter any issue.

I will be selling my R5c for a second R5 II as soon as I find one in stock that here in Switzerland seems impossible to find.

I can confirm that the AF, battery life and the image quality vs R5c the R5 II is definitely better.
Just now I was editing a video that I shot with both R5 II and R5c both in RAW and the image of R5 II is just better and can take more beating in post.

One thing that is not super is the auto WB, the R5c is more consistent.

Frame grab 8k 50, ISO 4000, no noise reduction, shot through a Plexiglas...

    3. Fixes an issue in which the camera's LCD display may become abnormal after the camera resumes operations from the [Viewfinder off] state. (I think this is the black/green screen problem)

I took no chances and sent mine back, I should get the replacement next week and I will update the FW once I get it. Nothing about rapid battery drain, but who knows...maybe one of these fixes fixed that as well.

    3. Could explain why it does not happen to me a lot, because I either use the EVF but then the LCD is off an mostly turned in or I use the LCD but I don't use the EVF. Thinking about I know why it happened only in 200fps because there I was continuously switching between EVF and LCD.... I hope it fixes it.

For the battery drain die you had the setting with Standby: Low Res to On? This makes a big difference while not filming how much battery you drain. R5c does not have this feature, and it burns battery at the same rate if your record or not.

Not really. It is difficult to recover gradations of tone and color that are not in the original RAW file. As I mentioned, I will need the CRM files to confirm. The R5 II and R1 have very different sensors that should produce visible differences in DR, RS, noise/texture, and color. Since the R1 sensor is likely a variant of the 6K sensor in the C400/C80, I would expect better performance for video than the R5 II's 10.9 stops of usable DR and 17ms rolling shutter in 8K mode (as demonstrated in the tests above).

Number game interpretations. For RAW with no processing you should compare to the max DR possible so it would be 14.9 vs 13.4.

The proof that in 4k Log R5II 13.6 stops of usable DR vs 12, indeed disappointing 😉

And view that you are disappointed can you point hybrid cameras with more than 13.6 stops? I believe only A1 has 0.2 more...

But again, I don't care about the numbers too much as I just open the files from both camera that I own and is definitely visible the better DR.

  13. 10 hours ago, Kino said:

R5 II offers very little DR improvement on my R5C (and only in the shadows), whereas the the R1 looks like a significant improvement in both highlights and shadows. However, I will need to see more footage when the camera is released. FF 6K RAW is really the sweet spot for video. The EVF and AF on the R1 are also world class and there is no need to attach a fan/battery compartment to avoid overheating in our L.A. summers. Canon 1-series cameras are simply built to different standards in terms of weather sealing and durability.

Canon claims 16 stops for both so not sure why you are expecting significant improvements from the r1 vs r5 II.

In my experience shooting R5c and R5 II (I own both) side by side the R5 II has better DR. The numbers also confirm this.

On the IBIS issue I agree with you. Same for the overheating.

Btw I owned 1D III, 1Dx, 1Dx II and 1Dx III and I'm so happy that R3 and R1 does not look any better than the R5 II so I can skip those huge body that are a pita on gimbal and heavy. I use big lenses like the 100-300 2.8 on the R5 II and compared to my sports steup of years ago 1Dx III + 200-400 is much lighter and compact for a better picture quality.

  14. Last week I shot two ice hockey matches and a horse endurance race. Shot mostly 8k 25 and 50 RAW and some 10bit 2k 200fps. I did not have any issue with black/green screen, but I never had it in RAW.

As I film the hockey matches in the same arena so same lighting and similar situations, I can confirm that AF is better than R5 and R5c and the image quality too, it is less noisy, and I find it easier to expose. The AWB I feel the R5c is better but as I mostly shot RAW it does not really matter.

I'm exposing the highlight to just barely pass the last top row of the WFM and it seems to be working well in most of my scenarios. Now Canon please add a button to show and hide WFM!!

Battery life in 8k 25 is about the same as the R5 and much better than the R5c.
At 8k 50 I shoot around 30 min of footage with the camera on, continuously AF and IS  (no standby) for around 1.5h with 1 battery and still had juice left.

In 8k 50 it will eventually overheat, for the endurance race (under the sun at 25c) I did longer takes like 5-10 min each and the overheating warning was at 2 out 10. Is the only occurrence so far that the warning came out but most of my takes are below 5 min.

I got scared because a couple of times the brightness of the EVF did change while shooting, the recorded video was normal with no brightness change, then I realized that I did disable auto brightness of the LCD but not for the EVF.... rookie mistake.

I did a quick test at 14mm and the IBIS wobbling is much improved over the R5, where it was not usable imo... I need to do some more tests as I did only by standing still and panning (fast and slow) but no walking/running yet.

I'm starting to consider replacing my beloved R5c with a second R5 II, for my usage the only two things that I would really miss from the R5c on the R5 II are: peaking during AF (less needed as the R5 II AF is better) and no overheating.

The biggest improvement over the R5c is AF, battery life, DR (noise, highlights and easy to expose), 2k 240fps, c1-c3, IBIS (although I'm sure there will be occurrences that I wish it did have full locked system)

What was wrong with it...  mechanical issue?

AF not reliable, they changed the AF chip twice,  one was a recall, but nothing really improved.
I also had the mirror box replaced because it was getting stuck in hot temperatures... it was 1 week old, sent in twice as these stupid support people ignored my note to warm the camera to 30 degrees. At the end I traveled there at put it on a radiation and show the issue. CPS gave me a 1Dn loan until it was fixed.

In 20 years of Canon is the only issue that required me to send it in but I was really frustrated.

On the R5 II, I don't believe the green screen issue is HW it sounds typical of buffer bugs (Resolve had similar issues in the past). Getting a replacement now it will most probably have the same HW. It is really widespread the issue so either is FW or is a recall.

  16. 9 hours ago, herein2020 said:

Yes I saw that as well. CPS told me its a HW issue and I need to send in the camera....I'll wait until the FW update to see if things improve.

It's insane to me that issues this major and this common made it through to even v1.0 of the FW.

HW issue? It seems a typical buffer corruption issue... purely SW... but let see.... The picture that you posted is what happens to me, so far only in 200fps but I do shoot mostly in RAW.

AF never stopped in my case, and I shoot 3 TB of video so far, all using AF. Was it with the adapter or RF? If it is with the adapter, then it seems to have an issue with it as first the aperture and now the AF both that needs camera+adapter+lens communication.

  17. In my case when I press the record button the video feed goes black but all the info items on the screen are still visible. Is like filming with the lens cap on, so it seems different than your case.

I had to pull the battery but I was in an hurry.

I’m submitting the case to CPS

  18. Really nice video.

Your summary is quite in line with mine that I posted here: https://www.eoshd.com/comments/topic/88441-canon-r5-mark-ii-firmware-problems/?do=findComment&comment=754082

I had the same black screen bug, in my case only at 200fps but now that I think about it is also the only mode that I did shoot not in RAW. Seems a fixable firmware bug. Same for the annoying wfm.
The lens issue never happened to me (so far), but I used only RF lenses no adapter: 100-300 2.8 (naked, 1.4x, 2x), 28-70 F2, 16 2.8, 14-35 4. Did you check if the contacts of the adapter are good and clean?

In a few presses release it was mentioned that 8k 50/60 is only RAW light (not sure why somebody would use RAW (maybe for VFX)

I'm happy to see that I was not dreaming about the better quality of CLog2. I'm just editing right now and the difference between R5c CLog3 and R5 II Clog2 is quite visible and for me is also easier to expose correctly.
