FWIW, we seem to now have a method to make bitrate mods permanent (in hibernation image) so independent of Bluetooth and similar. But this currently applies only to bitrate mods (but should apply to 2.5k on NX500 as well). Other mods still depend on Bluetooth. We are all working on further improvements.
    See here for more information

Yeah the NX500 is a great little B camera, especially good for stills and timelapses now that the hack has enabled silent shutter, which almost acts kind of like a pseudo-ibis in a way as well, since there is never any shutter shock, shutter speeds can be set lower than usual and still get sharp photos.
The 4k crop is pretty annoying though, but can also be pretty convenient. A tiny, stabilized lens like the 16-50pz can be pretty versatile switching between 1080 and 4k to take advantage of the crop. Something to be aware of also is that there is no UHD 24p, you have to go up to the DCI 4k for 24p which makes it slightly annoying matching with the NX1.

My trick is to hold the camera at like chest/neck level and walk around like that and just act like I am pondering something then when you do bring it up to your eye no one is like WOW a camera everyone was kinda already expecting it lol.
Also another small trick that helps me is I push rec before I bring the camera up (NOTE NX1 you need to make sure EVF is on first ) for some reason in my head I feel like its less of a "now I'm recording" moment and I tend to act more casual about the whole thing lol.

Honestly - I never thought the NX1 hack would get this far!

I can remember long ago, when we were all but children playing in the garden, back when Kidzrevil first posted this challenge....

At the rate some of the folks here are carving deeper into the guts, I wouldn't be all that surprised if one day someone DID find a way to get a RAW video feed out of these kittens of ours.

In the meantime it sure seems to be a resounding success even just in it's first couple of months, with the increased bit-rates cleaning up some of the problem areas in just the way I expected it would. Kudos to all involved.

Now if only Otto or someone else could write a sub-script that would prevent me from pointing my NX1 at bad subject material...

Yeah it's too easy to get locked into that "grass is greener" game… although I have to say I shoot an A7sII at work most days and for me it's not all it's cracked up to be, ergonomics are horrible, everyone knows about the menus, battery life way worse than nx, bloody awful screen… it just feels soulless. For me the nx1 is basically the perfect camera ergonomically. So comfortable to hold and easy to shoot with.
The only thing the sony's really have going is the low light and of course it's a little bit easier to achieve shallow dof, but to be honest with fast glass I pretty much never have to go above 1600, ever. Who actually NEEDS 25,000+?! And why are they only filming in pitch black caves?!
I do love (and frequently use) the NX1 for stills as well, but lately I've been batting around the idea of picking up a full frame just to utilize all my FF lenses the way they're meant to be used… which means mirrorless over dslr, to adapt all that glass, so I've looked at used A7r prices, but then it sucks to buy a camera that sucks for video, just in case, so then… gah… round and round it goes.

Yeah I used to own the A7s I also used the GH4 but the tiny sensor almost gave me tumour in low light, great camera otherwise you just need light, a lot of it.
A7s is, lets just say............ A good photo low light camera, but not so much for video...... 1080p and horrid rolling shutter with terrible menus and God awful ergonomics even worse than the A7sII/A7rII
In a way the NX1 is the perfect camera, its got the perfect body, its got all the tech inside we just needed to unlock the goodies in video mode. Photos are a class of its own too, only Nikon beats it in APS-C size when it comes to photography. I wish the rumour of Nikon buying Samsung camera line was true, I would pay my left leg for a Nikon NX2 with that great video features and mirrorless Samsung sensor tech with a Nikon mount.

I'm not so much for ff cameras. I mean, ok, they are cool, but I still prefer a high end apsc to a mid-end ff. Of course 1dx mk2 is incredible, but imo nx1 is better than most ff under 3000$.

I from the other side just consider getting the 16-50S and/or the 50-150. I am reconsidering my options very dynamicaly (almost real time!) and I do not see anything better with similar, or slightly more cost, than a NX1+16-50S combo. The practicallity of this, is just priceless. IBIS is the only thing missing, but the NX1 is perfect size/weight wise, for the most image stabilizers (e.g Ronin), and I do not see any APS-C camera surprass it anytime soon, and when it will, it won't be cheap (including glass), so I huess I am good for at least a couple more years, which is a lifetime for equipment of this sort.
Together with the NX500, is just a perfect combo for 4K low budget jobs, and if I want run and gun 1080p, I go C100mkII.

I have used A7 cameras, A7Sii is great, but only using it as a sensor (as we use the black magic cameras, no ergonomics whatsoever),  the battery life is the worst ever fro pro work (together with black magic pocket!), menus/button placement just terrible, screens (back screen, EVF) not that great, and I am against full frame sensors for video (I do not like the aesthetic and practical problems it creates). Also, maybe A7 cameras are smaller than NX1, the lenses are big and heavy, so I can't really see any advantage there, in the contrary, with such big and heavy lenses you need a sturdy dSLR like style body.
If you earn money from the NXes, the investment is just minimal, maybe for a hobbyist ia not very wise to invest (actually, I am resisting too), but as a short term investment, is not that bad (considering that the S lenses are 2 to 3 times cheaper than similar ones in other systems).
GH4 ergonomics are really far behind NX1.

Samsung offered features in their updates that other brands offer in one to three generations of new bodies. The only other company that I respect in that sense is Panasonic, always trying to offer the most to their customers (again not because they are "nice people", but because they want to attract customers), but with paid firmware updates or new bodies nevertheless. Maybe the most like-able people in the industry are the Fuji ones, and I do not see their cameras and firmwares being bold and beautiful.
That was probably the last reason that NX failed though. We have discussed many of them before, now it is not the time, as it is actually kind of optimistic that they have a new firmware update. The fact that actually someone took an order to fix the connectivity issues with newer Android versions, (for normal "normal" people of the mainstream, the target group of Samsung anyway, that is far more important than the mods/hacks; we, the others, can still go on with our firmwares) leaves all the opportunities open.
    Plus the filmconvert situation!

Disabling NR and enabling UHD, 4K, 2.5K MJPEG even UHD at 50/60FPS with LOG would make NX1 and NX500 kill cinema cameras in the price ranges of 20 - 50k in terms of video quality, sure you get one or two stop more dynamic range, but these cameras are like mobile camera size in comparison to those cinema cameras imao.
Make NX1 shoot 2.5k raw video, would been a pipe dream come true, that would probably get big names to use the camera for their big movies I am sure of it.
They used Canon DSLR's with Magic Lantern in the movie Mad Max

No this is Samsung NX500 in 1440p and 2160p mode at 6400ISO (highest it will go)
There appears to be no NR on in these video modes with Kino's Mod Pack, but I am not sure if his Mod Pack turned off NR for UHD mode for some reasons. Also if you apply noise reduction on these footages it looks way better than NX1 at 6400ISO
The fact its not colour noise either means a lot of colour is saved as well.

I really appreciate your hard work as tester - it is really great contribution.
Honestly - I have tried one of very very early version of Kino Seed's version and then rather stick to original Vasile's BT hack becuase it basically fixed most important issue to me of NX1 (macroblocking) and I am fine with it (except longer booting). I know that last versions are probably big leap from earlier versions (also because of you)- I will definitely try it but updates comes so fast (which is great!) and I was 2 weeks without internet connection so I am little bit lost now :))
BTW  :-) - my name is Pavel (first name) Masek (surname). MaÅ¡ek corrupted because of unsupported diacritics from FB login...

Still not even had time to install the new firmware... and the little time I have for cameras outside of work is being stolen by the M8.
    But here is some footage.
A quick edit of material gathered for a BTS to a friends photo exhibit. As some may know I shoot a lot of analog film, so when he needed a BTS for his Large Format project I was game.
He is doing two things, recreating old pictures of his home town. And also takes portraits in the same old stiff ways they did back in the 50s, but in todays environments.
In this "draft version" I left in some shakes, zooms and sound for the sake of reviewing the LS300. The final version will be silent, probably B&W and much much longer.
(its going to loop on a monitor in the museum)

Its shot in HD 4:2:2 using only a Canon 35mm f2.0 IS lens. All closeups etc are done with the marvelous Prime Zoom.
It was a good test of something I already knew, the LS300 is a killer Run-n-Gun camera. There was no directing, blocking, or retakes. Everything outside was was done in an hour and I have loads of footage.
Like I said, these are just some random shots from the material, I didn't spend more than 10 minutes on grading since its going to be B&W.
I might do a short version of the final video and put it on Vimeo later on.

Kisaha reacted to OliKMIA in Drones. Which one?
Hey Guys. I've been building and flying drone for years now, long before it became mainstream. Here is what I would consider:
    - Before buying a 4-5K inspire, get a a dirt cheap used Phantom 3 Standard (the cheap version) for $300-400 and play with it a lot. The control and handling are similar to the Inspire but this is the one you want to experiment and crash (because you will crash at the beginning). I would even start with a $35 Hubsan X4 to get familiar with the controls.
    - There are a lot of brand but the ready to fly package are DJI, Yuneec and 3DR. unfortunately the inspire with X5 is the only one that can provide enough IQ for real pro work.
    - Matrice 600 Vs Inspire X5R ? Beside the big size difference, the main aspect is redundancy. There is no room for failure on the Inspire. If one ESC/Motor/Prop/battery/flight controller IMU or compass fails, the whole drone is going down.
The new Matrice 600 offers in its Pro version a new A3 flight controller with 3 GPS antenna and 3 IMU in order to prevent failure (like in modern airliners, the 3 sensors check against each other and the computer eliminate the one unit that would give false reading)
The Matrice can also handle the loss of and ESC/Motor or prop and land safely, albeit with limited control. A quadcopter will spin an free fall in this case. There are solutions though with safety parachute and automatic deployment systems such as MARS and NorthUAV mayday board.
Last the Matrice 600 has a multi battery system that can handle the loss of power on one battery. This multi battery systems also offers the advantage of not having to carry large battery like other drone in this class. Large batteries are a problem because they are legally impossible to carry on board aircraft (check IATA policy).
    - As for flying, all these machine offer dumb proof assisted flight mode (GPS, ATTI, Return to home). No need to be an helicopter pilot. Any kid can fly a drone these days. Just a matter of practice.
Feel free if you have other questions.

Why buy a drone at all?...unless you personally want to specialise in that , I'd side with hiring in a qualified and experienced pilot is often much more cost effective for many projects. Hiring an experienced person with top of the line gear is always going to give far better results, plus they'll have liability insurance, safety training and any relevant flying permits/ licence.
any chump can buy a drone these days and get exactly the same results as everyone else - like most things, if you want special results from a piece of equiptment, you get a specialist to operate it for you....or make the decision yourself to focus just on drone piloting and spend a lot of time and money on it as your business. I'm a big believer in maintaining the 'craft' of things...realising that there are reasons why people specialise in such things.
The same thing has happened with gimbals - people buy or rent those over an experienced steadicam op who actually know how to make a shot work technically as well as creatively. Now with all these cheaper options to hand, it seems like a race to the bottom, when it comes to quality cinematic movement of a camera.
saying that, the Inspire is a good all-round drone if you were to take the jump for your own video projects.
