  1. A But I don’t know if I could justify that.
  2. Hard to see beyond that. Other than the integral network it has. I often have ideas for a film. So I pop in here to read gear reviews. And look at CVP. And convince myself that the idea needs new stuff. And read the Resolve manual. And watch YouTube videos. And do some financial sums. Then I forget what the idea was and go back to work. Thats why I’m not a filmmaker. If I was, then I’d forgo all those interim steps and just make the film...

    my first short

Fabulous. I thought some of the angles and composition were superb. I’m not sure I am clever enough to follow the story but thoroughly enjoyable. Indeed, inspirational!

    Davinci Resolve 16

Any ideas why I’m struggling to record anything (voice overs) in Fairlight? I’m thinking my own incompetence primarily but other factors might also be relevant. My Rode AI1 is plugged in and appears as an input option. It is set to 48k as required (I think). I add a track. The record button (“R”) activates and the red line appears on “record”. But it records a blank. Nothing. The meters stay zeroed. It’s not the Rode because switching to GarageBand (“B” not “L” - The Clash) is fine. Any ideas?
  5. Don’t RED have a relationship with Foxconn? Could the Sharp (possibly rebadged?) become the new “cheap” RED small form factor camera oft rumoured or hinted at? Especially given that the Hydrogen phone modules have been abandoned in favour of something being developed by RED itself rather than the phone spin-off.

    Davinci Resolve 16

I prefer to use Resolve but I also like motionvfx plug-ins for FCP so I often use both. But in a hobby situation with no deadlines or time pressures I think these decision are so much easier - after all, it doesn’t really matter...
  7. Shooting Cats & Killing kittens. That’s a busy day...
  8. You’re over complicating this. You have a camera - use it to generate your video footage. Edit and tell your story. I suggested a short with the title “My Town” - any progress? Night or day? Fast or slow paced? Music? Monochrome or vivid? People or places? Positive or negative? Handheld or tripod? Those are all decisions you need to make. And you are in a position to make. So make them! I look forward to see what you produce. (Thinking about it I realise that if I set myself the challenge - to produce a short called “My Town” - I’m not sure I’d know where to start!)
  9. I admire the courage & hope your adventure takes you to where you want to go !
  10. You’ve come a long way in a short time - asking how to direct films on a zero budget to looking at C700s! But, as above, if you need low light filming the original A7S remains your best bet.
  11. Agreed... for some purposes. But if the intention is to view on a phone or iPad type device in a casual and fun environment then, yes, the quality is absolutely there. I had mine on the snow earlier this year - initially I thought it was dreadful and was going to bin it. But my wife thought it was fabulous and watched the fun rather than the banding, dubious stitching (at times) and any number of other limitations (features?). The ability to let your audience reframe is astounding and produces a genuine immersive experience. I think it’s used by Sky Brown (who must be the coolest person in the world) in her BBC sport video.
  12. Insta360 One X if the idea is to make fun and very entertaining holiday films. Put the app on an iPad, load the footage and play with the 360 look around. Immersive, interactive and a great deal of fun to be had. And use the app on the Mac (and presumably PC) to edit into a “film”. It’s the future! Plus her phone.
  13. Insta360 one x. (Well done for marching)
  14. There’s still hope... We need the French to veto an extension. Then it’s simple: no deal or revoke A50. And surely... It all rather changes the meaning of the word “may” doesn’t it. But we digress.
  15. And if you completed Myst you have my absolute and total respect... Some of the “escape room” type games are similar in that they invent impossibly difficult mechanical puzzles whilst retaining that feeling of playing in reality. I suppose Zach achieved this in his short - the impossible talking sock but grounded in a real world scenario.
  16. Wow... been playing with the Rode AI1 (into GarageBand) and it is superb! At least for my modest purposes. Voices sound like voices. Which is a definite advantage for voice-over work. Easy to use. Solid. I’m not suggesting that it is any better than any of the aforementioned alternatives (because I have no way of knowing) but the suggestion of a USB mic got the ball rolling, the AI1 is what I’ve ended up with and by golly I’m happy! It looks slightly ridiculous (ie pretentious) but that’s fun too...
  17. Managed to get a Rode AI-1 kit to play with. After reading the recommendations for a USB mic (which makes a lot of sense) I looked around and liked the look of it especially since I can use the mic with its XLR (plus adapter) on the P4k too if required. Might also get an XLR lav to use with the AI USB. Thanks for comments.
  18. How did you just so happen to stumble across that may one enquire? Buy two and it would rival RED’s Hydrogen for an immersive experience.
  19. Hi, I’ve done a series of work-related videos showing various laboratory procedures. I need to do voice overs to add commentary. Originally I planned to record sound as I filmed but this seems to have been the preferred option (and I agree). I’ve tried a Tascam dr05 (built-in mics & a lav I found lying around) but not happy (albeit a lot of that is probably bad technique on my part). Any ideas for the optimum set up? I was thinking of a Rode NT1A mic (but I’m not sure why) plus something along the lines of a Zoom F4. Keeping the cost in 3 figures. I have a P4k so also vaguely wondered whether the Rode (using the phantom xlr adapted to mini) would enable a good sound track? Or a better mic for the Tascam? It’s just a series of short sentences (so any background noise is a nuisance because the bits between the voice over segments are totally silent - although I could add in some ambient laboratory sounds I suppose). Thanks.
  20. Creative and fun! As said above - how would you critique it? Both from the creative and technical side.
  21. I look like that and all I do is watch my screen. And deceive myself.
