awesome!!!!! what a great review. andrew i love your writing style and this was filled with great information thats super useful to me and my new rx10m2
i have owned a few cameras over the years (anybody remember this?) and the rx10m2 represents many firsts for me
its the first camera ive owned that i have ~any~ intention of shooting stills with that has a fixed lens, or a sensor smaller than +/- super35mm. if you wouldve told me three months ago that my next camera was going to have those characteristics i would have laughed
but when i realized that this brand new “bridge” cam could be a [relatively] inexpensive point of entry to shooting slog2 to see how much i like using it, i said why not~! because im very interested in the performance of the a7rii, and the upcoming a7sii, but im also interested in all the alternatives for the varied advantages they may provide.
anyway, some salient points which i personally appreciated:
• rx100iv magfilter, how interesting~! good to kno
• calling the 1080p the best youve used for the money is a big compliment! and your simile about a small sensor fs7 is just the thought i had when i first starting shooting 120fps with it!!…. its like a lil baby fs7 with a small sensor that i have with me~! no ones bringing an fs7 anywhere because its fun to carry around lol
• thanks for underscoring the 240fps being so good. i havent shot above 120 yet due to fear of quality loss and lack of time to experiment, but ill be sure to use it soon~! awesome
• re: low light, didnt know i could raise the iso for slog2 above 800
hadnt even tried ive been fighting with color in slog [a topic for another time, frowny face]. thanks for the heads up
• agree the 4k isnt impressive per se, but its my first 4k camera so it is for me in all those ways lol. a world of possibilities. but yeah, the 1dc for example annihilates it in terms of resolving power. its like night and day
• the continuous af in movie mode is so bizarrely awful that i couldnt figure out at first IF IT WAS ON OR NOT. when i realized it was i had to laugh
such garbage. james may on lsd lol
• "Too many 'cannot do this’ messages”ok i think you get my point that i liked this weblog entry (tbh reading it at work was the most fun ive had all day smfh). also im sorry that i didnt make posts complaining about the wait for the second part of this article; ill try to bitch more in the future

for this technique you want less frames per second. Shooting at 120fps means you will degrade image quality for no reason since each frame will be sharp, and low light benefits no longer apply.
for instance, 25p at 1/5th of a second confirms perfectly when sped up to 500% since the 1/5th shutter equates to 5 frames being exposed with one image. hyperspeed by 500% smooths as if it were 25fps.
shooting 24p and 1/4 sec means you need to speed up by 600% to keep the perfect conformation. 1/4 x 600% = 1/24th sec or 360degree shutter.
this was shot on the humble NEX5n, more than 3 years ago at around 400iso i think. imagine how clean the a7s would be when in this mode.
im with you rich, this is awesome btw. i just provided that specific info because shooter had messaged me multiple times lol

Okay and what Sony models?
Kay Lee clicks like. I've asked her but no word if her RX10 M2 does the job... Any RX10 M2 owner to confirm it please?
its kaylee one word lol
ok i checked: on my rx10m2 shutter goes down to 1/4sec for 24fps like rich said, BUT it only goes down to 1/120 in 120fps mode

hmmm. so its happening at different frame rates. could the memory card be an issue? i doubt it but idk. im using these http://www.amazon.com/Transcend-Speed-UHS-3-Memory-TS64GSDU3/dp/B00J3KA814 w no problems so far
wth
lame

Has anyone had glitches when recording 100fps 1080P?
It only seems to happen within the first second of shooting, but it's like it misses a chunk of the middle vertical strip and stretches the remainder to compensate...
This is taking the 100fps MP4 into After Effects CS6, and interpreting it as 25.
Seems to do it when played via VLC as well though.
I've not seen it before today where I was shooting at a local comic con, card is a Lexar 64GB 1000x (150MB/Sec) Professional UHS-II SDXC Card, which is what I've been using before with no problems.
I've attached a rendered clip from after effects, but the source seems to have the same glitch.
Thanks,
Steve
steve, i downloaded your file and that is undoubtedly an appalling aberration. fwiw i havent come across anything like that with my rx10m2 shooting 120fps 100mbs, but thats the only mode besides 4k that ive spent some quality time shooting. id definitely be interested in knowing what the disconnect is here

Which Hoya NDs did you have? Their ProND line is very good. But their others, not so much. If you want a variable ND, I've have very good experiences with SLR Magic's. In this video I compared it to the Tiffen VariND.
wow thanks zak. i just started researching *variable* nds and i was looking into the slr magic for my rx10m2, do you think i would have any trouble using it with a 62-77mm step up ring? like i said ive just started investigating all this but ive already run into the weirdness of an "X" pattern at higher densities which can be exacerbated (?) by having the nd ~over~ another filter or whatever......
video was so helpful!!!!

Hi Kaylee, Just a follow up on this post as I've been using these settings since you first posted them. Seemed I could never get the right look with sgamut and was looking for some help. This has been extremely helpful to me. Just like you said, add a tone curve, adjust the saturation to taste and for the most part, exactly the image I want. At the moment I'm -2 yellow, -1 magenta but have left the overall saturation alone. I may experiment with -3 yellow as I like to warm up my image without going too yellow. Also, the slog2 to rec709 lut built into resolve handles these settings beautifully. Simply pull down the gain, add a touch of contrast and the colors are as true to my eye as I've been able to get. So thanks again for the great advice! This forum and all of the participants here are the best!
omg thats awesome im so glad to hear that!!!!!!
the color science/settings of this camera have already made me question my sanity more than once lol, happy to see that youre doin well
thanks for sharing the details of your settings. also good to know about resolve... im looking forward to getting deeper into it when i get some more ram for my imac
-
thanks a lot for posting this shawn
i downloaded your clip –– an astounding amount of true detail and rich color
pulled the frame grab into photoshop to add a bit of magenta and yellow in the color balance..... wow at those canon skintones i gotta say. if i can ever get slog2 to do this ima start a blog lol
the subtle modulation in the faces of the five children closest to the camera definitely reminds me of canon raw.... amazing
the colour just feels right on an intuitive level - almost as if I'm looking through the optical viewfinder and not a recording on a screen

I don't see a separate control for saturation in highlights. Only normal HSL controls, and 3 way color wheels.
yeah thats it. lumetri is a GREAT addition to premiere but it needs more options imo, like what youve mentioned and selective color and so on
speaking of which idk how into photoshop you are but if its something youre p familiar with making a quick lut w adjustment layers and bringing that into lumetri might help? works for me

damn zach that sucks
sorry to hear that the lil guy has been so problematic~! thanks for sharing tha info tho

Looks great aside from issues already mentioned. Practically speaking, I'd be afraid of shooting with it though - it seems really hard to keep stuff in focus. Would have to be VERY well planned shots, unless you go for some aesthetic where the subjects come in and out of focus a lot.
right?
so i finally saw The Master last night and that happens... a lot lol
have you guys seen this? v interesting photographically speaking
great work rich
love the forbes 70 project!!!! wishing you all the best

theres a lot of great points in this thread
for me in 2015 the defining characteristic of the subjective feeling "it looks like video" is frame rate
high frame rate slog2 makes me feel a little ill when i pop open clips on my mac from the finder... but when that exact same footage is conformed to 24p it becomes magical
although i am not a high frame rate enthusiast as many are, i appreciate its use for certain applications, including those outside of what we would consider cinema, but within the world of narrative filmmaking id put it in the toolbox along with higher shutter angles – a useful creative technique, but only when used on the right occasions
-
Messing with the A7R II - good, but I would wait if you can till the A7S II - rolling shutter issues. Also save some cash.
Here's my receipe that I'm liking:
COLOR MATRIX - Pro, not s gamut - reds feel more red
COLOR GAMMA - CINE4, not slog - cleaner highlights. Slog2 looks weird with an 8 bit codec how it gets noisy in highlights
Black Level: 0
Black Gamma > Range: Middle , Level: -3
Knee > Mode: Auto , Auto Set > Max Point: 95 , Sensitivity: Mid
Colore Mode: Pro
Saturation: +8
Color Phase -2
Color Depth > R+1, G-1, B+2,, C-2, M-1, Y-3
Detail > Level, -5 Adjust > Mode; Manual, V/H Balance: -2, B/W Balance Type3, Limit: 0, Crispening:0, hi_light Detail: 0White balance > Manual > Grid setting B 1 (one to the left)
You don't have to follow it perfectly, but overall it can get to some stunning results. And the secret to any log recording is post. Use film convert. filmconvert.com. Or impulz luts. Select slog 2 - modify it - less contrast - less of a curve since it's less flat as s log 2
I used Film Convert Arri Alexa Log C profile for grading. FilmConvert setting is Arri Alexa as the camera. logC. film stock is Fuji Film 8543 Vivid. color 93. curve 100. size 35mm full frame. grain 0. But just mess around - find what you like.
Have fun!
And everyone post your own. Together we can help each other improve. That's what it's all about - using the Hive to get better. Get knowledge, give knowledge.
hi Ed!!! thank u for sharing this. i am new to shooting slog2 and your posts have been v helpful to me
what you pointed out about cine 4 vs slog is v interesting. i just got an rx10m2 and i havent noticed noisy highlight areas with my slog2 settings but ill have to check that out... in your experience, does this vary with exposure? ive been exposing for my highlights, basically setting the clipping point in camera just where i want it to be; but this is only the beginning of my testing
anyway, not being limited to the slog native iso of 800 on my lil cam would def be handy so im gonna try some cine 4 stuff~!!! thank u!!

I guess this is slightly off topic, but how's battery life with this for stills and for video?
battery life update: ive had the chance to fully wear out the sony battery twice now, shooting 100mbs 4k 24p with the screen on almost all the time: camera shut off in about an hour and a half

Lackey Moths? Known as tent caterpillars where I grew up in Michigan. I remember one year as a kid they were friggin' everywhere. Step on 'em and yellow guts squish out. Ah, I'm channeling my inner 8 year old.
sounds like an x file

I'd just try something with a decent review track like this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0049WBZEK?redirect=true&ref_=s9_simh_gw_p421_d10_i2
I've tried two different cheapo versions and haven't had any issues, yet. They're supposed to not hold their charge as long as the premium ones, but I can live with that.
dude youre the greatest!! TWO batteries and a charger for $27?!???? if i get two of those ill have five altogether thats soooo perfect thank uuu

A general warning RE: over exposing log.
Yes It reduces noise as you can effectively push the floor down in post (perhaps beside the point but this is how Dolby noise reduction worked in way in audio with pre-emphasis) BUT you lose over exposure latitude and usually more importantly, the skin tones are pushed further up the log curve and can end up with les data allocated to them than if you just shot 709.
i wouldn't personally bother with 3 stops over TBH. Though you may find a use for one and two. Best generally is to expose properly and just de noise, I find.
smooth highlight roll off is one of the joys of log. I wouldn't want to lose it over a bit of noise...
wow thank you for your wise perspective. your dolby analogy is v interesting
tbh denoising as part of that workflow isnt something ive heard too much about.... ill definitely do some research on the denoising part and give it a try~!
also, same, the highlight handling of slog2 is totally bringing me joy lol. takes me back to shooting film. i love it. but i guess i could be doing a lot better??? thanks for the heads up!!!!

I guess this is slightly off topic, but how's battery life with this for stills and for video?
hi vaga id like to hear what ppl think about this too
in my experience its not great but alright, but mind you ive barely shot any stills and ive just been using the 100mbs 4k and 120fps options with the screen on almost all the time doing some casual test shooting. i havent had a chance to completely wear out the sony battery cuz i dont have any backups yet but ill get back atcha when i do
speaking of extra batteries.... do you guys have any suggestions for the "transcend u3 card" of 3rd party batteries on amazon? lol i need that delightful dichotomy of reliability and frugality
P.S. cant believe i spelled dichotomy right on the first try

Well that took a bloody long time! But I've just this minute completed my new reel and site. It's not "announced" until Monday.... social media campaigns etc blah blah. But it's live! Check them here:
View my new showreel and website!
Some info
- Each and every image - I shot, lit, edited, graded. A little directing. Very involved in creative ideas.
- Core crew was mostly 4-5 regular people in these productions (Director, DOP, Production Manager, Spark, Make Up Artist).
- For the geeks - cameras used are Sony F55, FS7, FS700, RED Epic, GH3, BM Pocket.
- All images are music videos, but going for commercial/corporate work aggressively into the next year. (and still many music videos).
- The aim is to have 100% new material for Showreel 2016. Max creativity required.
Anyway, if you like it or don't like it, whatever. Just thought I'd share.
this looks OFFICIAL. ba

awesome and inspiring to see you producing such nice stuff without 3 dozen ppl at the video village (im trynna keep some of the scenes in my first feature p bare bones). hell yeah. you must have a great team

It just used the Fine Detail picture style I was using for stills, so basically had a USM ("Un-Sharp Mask", which sharpens the image) applied to it. I was only interested in moire/aliasing so didn't bother with anything else (well, sensible shutter speed). If you actually wanted to shoot movies with it you'd use a different profile...
This one is hand-held and with the Neutral Picture Style (91MB, untweaked Picture Style - so can be better, note my total video shooting with the camera is these moire tests)...
https://vimeo.com/136118235(Oh and remember the video shown on Vimeo is 720p and you need to download the 1080p version.)
It still completely destroys my GH3 and GH4 for moire/aliasing when shooting 1080p... please note this was my entire point. I am very impressed over this single item though. Bonus points for anyone else shooting this scene with their camera-of-choice!!!
BTW here's the maximum amount of stuff you can have super-imposed on the screen. You can turn much of it off, pretty much item by item. The settings are as per the video except it had a different picture style - Fine Detail here - and it was shot at f10, which you can probably see was needed from the histograms...
(You can also optionally clean the screen, I recommend Spontex micro-fibre cloths.)
what tha heck!!!
uhmmm wowww.... tbh i was a little shocked when i opened that 1080p file
i need to see more video from this camera
thanks for bringing this up dr_jon...!!!!!!!!!

the a7r is kinda half baked for video....... and i think thats part of the reason a lot of ppl were surprised at how aggressively video forward the a7rii is~!
i just sold my 7d for an rx10m2, and let me tell you, in terms of video it is a HUGE upgrade for many reasons. i mention it bc of the way you described what you need to shoot; there could be a lot of benefits there. its super easy to use handheld due to its stabilization, and rolling shutter weirdness is absolutely minimal compared to, say, the a7s. just a thought, might be worth looking into idk
whats lacking in comparison is the sensor size... but for me the rx10m2 is destined to compliment a full frame a7sii......which doesnt exist yet lol. how shallow do you need your dof?
speaking of the imaginary a7sii.... i dunno how long you feel comfortable waiting before pulling the trigger on this, but when the a7sii comes out the used price of an a7s may well be in your price range... but then again i dont know exactly what your price range is
what are we talkin here.... $1500 or so? less?
tbh id avoid the a7r entirely for video. moire/aliasing is one drawback as ebrahim pointed out; besides, youve just got way better options as ppl have mentioned. the gh4 as andrew suggested, a d750 if you can afford it as therenaissanceman said, idk theres more..... and when youre buying used theres definitely some deals out there if you hunt them down~!
-
While waiting for Andrew's full review on the RX10m2, can anyone post a set of 'camera video settings' for shooting the best SLOG optimized for grading quality? I've not seen many, if any, posts from knowledgable videographers on how to set up this camera. I know most of the action is over on the A7S and A7RII side of the house, but the output of the RX10m2 looks pretty good as a solid B cam. Or even an A-cam in the right run and gun situations. But I am new to shooting LOG and getting the most from the format on a tiny cam like this. Any suggestions? Andrew: will your review cover how to get the most from this camera as in specific settings you recommend?
Thanks for any help on this.
whatsup misterwiggles!
since the a7s came out last year i have spent way too much time reading about slog2 and being intimidated by it... because it turns out i didnt need to be...! its p easy to deal with as long as you have some crucial prior knowledge (lol). so in that spirit heres a few Quick Start Tips
• the slog2 output of the rx10m2 is very similar (perhaps virtually identical) to the a7s in terms of dynamic range and how it handles color –– so all that info is totally relevant and theres a ton of it out there~!
• slog2 has a base iso on these cameras which is your only option: the a7s base is 3200 and the rx10m2 is 800. as you may know the rx10m2 has a built in nd, so that can be handy, but i dont think that its variable in any way, its either "on" or "off". anyway, this base iso thing is something to be aware of: you cant just dial down to iso 200 like with the other picture profiles
• as far as color goes, avoiding sgamut entirely may be a good idea. i used the "pro" color settings posted on the previous page as a starting point, and decided to dial down the saturation a tad, the yellow even more, and the magenta just a bit. this has easily produced naturalistic color which doesnt require a lut to make it look halfway normal –– just some curves and saturation to taste. what you want to do with the settings in PP7 (slog2) is up to you of course and depends on the aesthetic of your project~!
• slog2 needs to be overexposed on these cameras –– 2-3 stops depending on who you want to listen to –– otherwise its a noisy hot mess. ive gotten great results throughout that range
ok!!!! i am not nearly as smart as most of the posters on this board but like i said it took way too much of my life to gather this information so i hope that helps a bit
other posters PUHLEASE correct me if i am wrong in any of this or something should be added or something!!!
Taking the plunge!
Can't turn down the high frame rates in a small body with no fuss for (relatively) few pounds.
This should be fun
its SO fun youre gonna love it. tbh idk if ive had this much fun shooting since i got my first camera

Sony RX10 II review final conclusion and introduction to its smaller brother, RX100 IV
In: Cameras
Posted
lol agree. and theyre actually super affordable to rent, at least here in socal
okay, THIS is what i am DYING to know about
please oliver, if you would be so kind, how different would you say color behavior is on these two different cameras, compared to each other? and how so? i believe andrew has mentioned that dynamic range in slog2 is very similar between the two, but what are your thoughts on the color and how it differs?
frankly im thinking about picking up a used a7s for cheap at the end of the year and im wondering how much the annoying/hard work im doing at the moment sussing out the best color i can with slog2 on my rx10m2 will translate over
