Taking your film into a movie house. You pay to have it screened in their auditorium with 4 walls.
You take the film to the next town and do it again.
    And so on.
The old fashioned way of doing indy film distribution.

While waiting to get my Sony Zeiss 55 1.8 back, I thought I would muck around with my old Canon 50mm 1.8 AC lens (basically an autofocus FD lens).
In a pinch, if I had nothing else, it would even be usable though to focus, you need to turn it to manual and use a small notch in the front (not THAT hard) and to change the aperture, I have to turn the on-off ring on the adapter (no click stops).
Yes, I BADLY need to clean my laptop.
    Used FF on an A7s.

There are ways to get into the black doing a "4-wall", but the numbers are modest, so the realistic idea is to just use theatrical release as promotion.

I can see myself playing but only once I have to self isolate for 2 weeks which is (hopefully) a while off if at all.
No cat though and my flat is only two main rooms with a small kitchen and toilet/shower area so i WILL be going nuts.
The only wildlife is the odd bug or two so maybe a macro video unless I can get one of the local feral cats wandering by out the bathroom window.
Maybe a yellow ceramic rabbit as the "talent"?

This thread is for all of those cheapie, plastic lenses that shouldn't be as good as they are.
There are a few well known lenses that carry the moniker proudly like the Canon 50mm 1.8 and 40mm 2.8, or the Nikkor 50mm 1.8 D.
But there are some lesser known lenses like the Tokina 19-35mm that have a cult following and are often referred to as a "Plastic Fantastic."
The first lens I will mention is the Canon 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5. For the price, it shouldn't be as good as it is.
Here's a sample frame from the 5D Mark iii with ML Raw...
I have a few more on my computer I'll add later today.
Do you guys have any favorite Plastic Fantastic lenses? Please share and upload some sample videos or video frames.

I believe I've had a chance to own one of many rebranded versions of this Tokina - Vivitar 19-35 mm f/3.5 - 4.5 Series 1.
And I must admit it's one of the lenses I regret selling.
Build quality was horrible, handling was cumbersome.
But, man, the images coming out of it were gorgeous (at least to my eyes, hahaha).
Here are some photos I took with it and a7 III:

(FYI, the B&W photo depicts Gdańsk Town Hall, whereas the last two show Malbork Castle).

As a matter of fact, right now I'm eyeing another copy of it and most likely I'll end up buying it.

So, here are some keepers from my trip to Edinburgh and Gdańsk.

All in all, I think it's a pretty good lens.
Even though my copy seems a little bit decentered (left side of the image is visibly worse than right), it doesn't disturb me that much.
It allows me to get a whole different perspective and I like it.

Offcourse. For example: If you got a boring character, shoot him on a tripod. If you got a crazy @#@@#@#@ character, go all shaky handheld. Same with angles, lights, DOF, focal lenghts, composition. It all makes a difference.

Your focal length also has a great deal of impact on performance.
Some examples would be shooting scenes from further back with a more telephoto lens to create separation from the performance/actors and give them more space. The opposite is also true, if you get uncomfortably close with wide angle lenses, you'll inherently see a difference in the performance vs if you were shooting from a more comfortable distance.

Another one of my favorite Plastic Fantastic lenses is the Nikon Series E 50mm f/1.8. When the Series E lenses were released, Nikon was chastised for their poor build quality. But in comparison to today's lenses, they're built like tanks.
About 6 months into filming my movie, life took a turn and I went through a rough patch that's really just beginning to smooth out. Unfortunately, that rough patch forced me to sell all of the lenses I was using to shoot my film. I dug deep into the gear closet and pulled out the Nikon 50mm 1.8 Series E. This is the result of that test...

In some weird way, the rough patch I went through was a blessing, it forced me to look at my film in a different way and eventually led me to probably my favorite of Plastic Fantastic lenses... the Canon 28mm 1.8.
I've posted plenty of shots from that lens, so I won't bore anybody with them, but that is one lens I will never sell. By lens metrics, it's not even that great of a lens, but its rendering oozes character and mood. In my opinion, it's probably my favorite lens of any lens I've ever used.
Canon has a few Plastic Fantastic lenses. I would love it if Canon came out with a budget friendly cine lens lineup using these lenses' formulas in proper cinema housings.

Any good cinematography will be emotionally manipulative.  So the answer is yes.  Suggest watching and studying early movies that really explored this such as Citizen Kane or Battleship Potemkin.  I also just recently watched Rudolph Maté's work with Joan of Arc and was in tears by the end of it.

People forget that in the first Transformers movie that Megan foxes character was a young women that was trying to be treated with respect for her skills with cars.
The way she was shot completely undermined that, to the point no one even remembers her character.
The way you shoot a character can absolutely influence how their performance is portrayed.

There might be ways that a cinematographer and editor could  "interpret" a performance.  And, perhaps, lighting could influence a performance, as could lenses, DOF (if the actor/performer could see those results on set).

However, it is not the cinematographer's job to influence a performance -- that is the directors job.

In regards to an editor or cinematographer "interpreting" a performance, both crew members exist to serve the director's vision.  So, they can suggest ideas and execute their craft, but the director necessarily has the final word.

I have, it has great rendering and very little distortion, also the manual focus ring is better than the 17-35 or 16-35.  Unfortunately it has a horrendous minimum focus distance that was bad enough that it did effect it's use for video and photography.
