I signed the petition about a year ago.
I am happy to hear they got a response from Samsung.
My question is would you guys be willing to trust Samsung again after leaving us hanging like this? and if not what kind of commitment would be needed from Samsung for you to trust them.

For me, I would need to see a 2-3 year lens release roadmap schedule similar to what Sony did. It's not that I need a lot of lenses I just need to know they are committed to developing the line and that an NX3 would follow after the NX2.

Actually, who am I kidding I like my NX1 so much I would probably buy an NX2 no matter what lol. I can only imagine if they made the NX2 today it would probably have some ridiculous specs like 4k 120p and 1080 @ 480

I would disagree with you on the points that Samsung's own store did not sell them and the employees who worked there never heard of NX1.
I worked at Samsung's OWN store as a sales associate in London where we have seen the NX1 and got trained on it month before the release of this camera. I was the first person to sell the NX1 on the launch day.
I bought the NX1 (display unit) that was being used in the store as training purposes by us and to show customers after the store shut down on December 23rd.
I'm still using it and I bought another NX1 just few months ago to use it as backup or B-cam.
Used the NX1 last month on a wedding. The footage came out astonishing. I also had the Sony A7S II, but it was resting inside the bag most of the time. Prefer to shoot with the NX1 more.

I am not a electronics engineer but I am pretty sure high ISO performance and color rendition are not connected in that way. Meaning the camera designers do not get to make the decision to sacrifice the one for the other.
The NX1 performs great (for its age) at high ISO's. Remember this is almost a 3 year old camera at this point. If you look at the cameras that came out around the same time it performs competitively except against the a7s but that is an unfair comparison as the a7s was built with the sole purpose of having high ISO performance.

Samsung keeps hiring old Japanese engineers, designers and other talented people who are "honourably" fired from Japanese Corporations because the new generation must replace the old.
And this is the result, Samsung is destroying Japanese Corporations, Sony fired a lot of elderly extremely talented people and Korean Corporations fished them in.
Having tried several cameras it seems that Samsung NX1 and NX500 trades high ISO performance for superior extremely high colour reproduction.
So while having very bad ISO performance in general with huge drops when reaching 800 ISO and beyond, the colour reproduction at lower ISO is superior to most cameras I have tested so far, even the Sony big megapixel beasts cannot seem to keep up. The Sammy's do what other CMOS bayer sensors struggle with the most, capturing accurate autumn colours.
Even Sigma SD Quattro with Foveon censor seem to struggle very hard to keep up with Sammy censor.

NX1's AF was the second best back then, not that further away from Canon's, and still I prefer it from Sony's for video (so in my opinion, it is still the second best!). Samsung was nothing to Canon back then, the smaller players were afraid the most (Olympus, Fuji, Panasonic mainly; Sony was worried, and Nikon would have been doomed). Olympus and Fuji haven't the resources to fight Samsung, Nikon can't compete in the new digital age, and even Panasonic is much smaller than Samsung.
Sony is powerful, but Samsung had some amazing R&D breakthroughs, and the capacity to manufacture EVERYTHING you need for a photo/video camera (CPUs, RAMs, lenses, Super AMOLED touch screens, everything). First 28mpxls BSI sensor (A7Rii was the second big sensored BSI actually) etc etc.
Samsung just decided that they didn't want to compete on a declining market, and pro video/photography was a long shot. NX1 was too late in the game.
It is just a pity that we didn't see a NX1mkII, they did the first version SOOOOO good, without any prior real practical experience. The NX team had some truly talented and passionate people (just check some of their older corporate videos), something that a huge capitalistic and autocratic mega-trust, couldn't allow to exist.

They are really on the ball. I feel the respected as well and they have really supported EOSHD with this roll-out of the firmware.
I feel every penny of the investment I made in the GH5 has been rewarded with this update, and the ALL-I codec is stunning.
This is a Hybrid Log Gamma / TV thing, you are best off using H264 for everything else especially the 400Mbit ALL-I. Due to the high efficiency of H.265 it only needs half the bitrate of H.264 for the same quality so it is good for saving space, but it doesn't quite have the filmic motion and fine grain of the ALL-I H.264.

Hi Kino, In relation to this I think it changes little if the heir of Samsung is in prison.
The data is clear, Samsung's strategy to focus their employees on commercial products and smartphones has proved to be a great success.

I just hope that Samsung (also for a prestigious issue) continues to shoot professional cameras with NX2 release, also because Red has decided to enter smathphone market with Red Hydrogen damaging the Samsung Galaxy market , So I hope that Samsung to discourage Red (which has 100% sales of professional video cameras) is to produce professional cameras and camcorders, for professionals, invading Red's market.
These are just my considerations, but the only certainty I have is that if Samsung comes out of a new professional camera, whoever has a Samsung camera will definitely run to buy it.

In FHD it's the aliasing that causes the sharpened look, not the digital sharpening algorithm.
This is all a bit of a pointless argument because in 4K on the NX1 you have the option in post how sharp or soft you want to go.
The NX1 has a superb image.

Even if you do think it's over sharpened at -10 (I don't - it looks similar to a Canon JPEG on default sharpness and no photographers are rounding on Canon claiming their photos are 'over sharpened') then it is a rather easy problem to fix.
Downscale to 2.8K then upscale to 4K again.
And if you want to fix your shooting style to get a less 'sharp' result there are numerous techniques, easiest being -
Black Mist Pro on the lens and softer light, more diffusion.

16-235 in-camera stops the clipping so you should use that option like in my guide if you want to maximise dynamic range without having to fix the clipping problem in post.
If you're going to fix it in post using 0-255 in-camera is ok.
Smart Range + is a new thing, I saw the effect it had on JPEGs and realised it could be enabled in movie mode as well... I assumed before that it was some kind of Samsung TV thing!!

When the NX1 came out Philip Bloom bought it but didn't use it very much as he said the dynamic range was limited.
I thought it was a bit limited too, turns out we were both wrong...
Here is the effect of Fast Colour Corrector in Premiere changing output levels to 16-235 for NX1 clips recorded in 0-255 RGB range mode.

Original file - blown out clouds...

And here is an additional 1-2 stops in the highlights from enabling Smart Range + in-camera -

I'd put this camera right up there for image quality now... Right near the top of the pile.
Both sample images shot with the superb NXL adapter by the way with Canon 50mm F1.2L full frame FOV and DOF. Thanks Luca

Are you still working on an electronic version? You might consider crowd-funding that one too as I'm sure there would be a lot of interest!

The Aputure DEC modded one was pretty cool to see (although it looks like it rules out using the NX1 Battery Grip). A full-on electronic one connected to the camera body with AF functionality would be awesome, and would instantly make the NX1 a top-class full-frame camera.

Marco Tecno reacted to Andrew Reid in Installing the hack
The original creator's instructions are in the Readme.txt file as part of the download (links below), all credit goes to the hack dev. You must read this before installation. However I thought I might summarise how to get started here in a sticky post to save searching for help (if you need it) in the long threads.
    PREPARE CAMERA
    1. Ensure fully charged battery
    2. In the main menu, ensure Auto Display off = 5 minutes and Power Save = 10 minutes
    3. In the main menu, ensure Touch Operation = on
    4. Ensure firmware is version 1.41 for the NX1 (you can view this in the main menu under the option Device Information). If older, update firmware according to Samsung's instructions online or via Wifi in the camera menus.
    5. Format a memory card in-camera
    6. Turn off bluetooth and wifi, set mode dial to M
    PREPARE THE NX-ON-WAKE PATCH
    1. From the following link download nx-on-wake.zip https://github.com/ottokiksmaler/nx500_nx1_modding/blob/master/nx-on-wake/nx-on-wake.zip
    2. Extract all files in nx-on-wake.zip to the ROOT directory of your SD card.
    3. Insert the SD card into the camera, turn on the camera and wait
    4. A touch screen menu appears to enter a "Magic Number". This is in the Readme.txt, to ensure you have read it. Please look at that document carefully for the 6 digits. I found "357669" but check to see if different.
    5. Message "Thanks, preparing the ground" will appear and the display will go blank momentarily. Green light begins to flash...
    WAIT AT LEAST 5 MINUTES
    6. Leaving the camera powered on, pull the battery out and wait 10 seconds, then put the battery back in.
    WAIT AT LEAST 4 MINUTES
    7. Turn off the camera using the power switch.
    8. Pull the battery, wait 5 seconds and put the battery back in. Turn on the camera.
    9. Look at the green LED, you will see it blink 4 times (one long and three short blinks), to confirm everything went ok.
    10. Turn off the camera and remove the SD card.
    INSTALL THE MAIN HACK
    1. Download nx-patch.zip from https://github.com/ottokiksmaler/nx500_nx1_modding/tree/master/video-bitrate-mods/nx-patch
    2. Delete the all the nx-wake related files and folders from the SD card
    3. Extract the nx-patch zip and place everything in the root directory of your SD card
    4. Insert card into camera, turn on the camera and wait for the 'Please wait, installing...' message and for it to do its thing
    5. Hack should now be activated, turn off/on camera and you can enter the hack menus by rapidly double-pressing the LCD illumination button on the NX1
    6. In the hack menus (double-press LCD illumination button), you can select bitrates, and change Pro1 from 80 to an even higher value like 160
    7. Press the "Make persistent" option to save any modifications so they remain on the camera at next cold boot
    8. Please make sure you have the fastest possible SD card for Pro bitrate 4K recording (80Mbit to 160Mbit). Happy shooting!

Let me propose this thought in the meantime. Was there ever a time in which 120fps @ 1080 was suitable or widely accepted by an average audience?
I think it's important to remember in the face of ever evolving technology that "good enough" doesn't simply go away just because "better" comes along. I'm as guilty as the rest of you for wanting, possibly even lusting over the latest and greatest camera tech. And certainly when you hit the professional circuit many operators and even some clients will judge you solely based off the equipment you associate yourself with. But I have to remind myself that a great many times my 2014 camera (NX1) has helped me achieve great success and continues to do so in 2017, and this will only stop when the camera becomes physically nonoperational.
The point is, creativity isn't beholden to the current state of technology. Creativity exists on it's own. The technology can help express that as a tool but technology is not creativity itself and can achieve nothing on it's own.
Like many of you, I want all the power and features of Arri and RED products, but under $2,000. No one WANTS to pay $50k for just a camera body. They pay that price because there is no alternative. We are incrementally getting close to this ultimate goal, and I would argue had Samsung stayed in the digital camera market that would have raised the bar for competitors. 4k/60fps would have already been the current standard by every manufacturer. But we're not quite there yet and without companies like Samsung raising the bar, ("like" meaning huge R&D departments) we will continue to see incremental movement in this area from the likes of Panasonic, Sony, Olympus, Fuji, Canon, Nikon, etc., etc. Consequently it also happens to be a marketing tactic. But should that prohibit any of us from expressing our creativity and ingenuity in the meantime? Hell no! We already have exceptional quality today. Think back just 10 years ago with tape based camcorders?
Let the haters hate. You and I have pretty images to create.

These images prove a few things about the NX1 and many cameras in general and I'm super happy you shared these to help me prove something I tell colleagues all the time.
1.) The secret to getting NX1 footage to look warm and or filmic to is first turn the sharpness down in-camera to -10. Samsung purposely uses sharpening algorithms in many of their products because their user research tells them that most people are attracted to it. It's the same for their tendency for bold contrast and saturation. While this is good for large screen 4k TV screens, it will make your footage look like video or broadcast quality. Even with sharpness essentially turned off, the NX1/500 image still is one of the sharpest images known to the entire industry. I implore anyone to test this assertion out against any Arri or RED.
There are times I will even put a fast blur on my on my footage in Premiere at .25/.5 just to give it that "emulsive" look. Some people may find the sharpening in the NX1/500 a turn off, but personally I like having the latitude. You can always reduce sharpness but it's very difficult to add sharpness to blurred pixels.
2.) The art of lighting separates amateurs from professionals. The sets of images above demonstrate this beautifully. This aspect has very little to do with the camera, if at all. Lighting your scene should be part of the narrative. It should tell it's own story while being a part of the bigger picture. In the whole high ISO craze Sony introduced to the industry, I feel many cinematographers or videographers have gotten lazy or simply forgotten the art of lighting a scene. It's more than just about proper exposure. Darkness is as much a narrative as light.
3.) Composition and setting the scene. This not only includes principles like the rule of thirds, but also wardrobe and even actor's micro expressions. Even in these stills you still get a sense of the character's motivation and persona. Trust me, even the crappiest digital cameras today can technically produce a better IQ than film cameras of even the 80/90s, but that means nothing if there's no story and art direction. It's not really all about the camera. It's about the narrative and everything in concert that supports that, which the camera is only part of.
I also wanted to add that no general audience would view this film (or stills) and think it didn't come from a camera the size and cost of a two-story house. If the movie is successful, the only thing they'll being thinking about is the emotional impact the story had on them. Good film quality is exactly what you DON'T think about.
