DBounce got a reaction from kidzrevil in SONY FS5 vs SAMSUNG NX1
Do you disagree? Honestly up until a short while ago I was not an NX1 owner... but after all the footage, pictures and reviews of the NX1, I became convinced that it was worth a shot. And now having owned it, I can tell you it's a great camera. Granted it's not perfect... no camera is. But it is an awesome value for money. It's 1080p is better than the 4k of many cameras. And it's 4k is among the clearest that I've seen. Colors are good also. It's amazing that there can even be a debate relative to cameras in a totally different class... that alone should stand as testament to how good a value the NX1 is. Truth be told, you could spend a lot more and still end up with an inferior camera in many ways.

I have no experience with the old firmware, so I cannot speak to that.  However,  I can tell you that the 1080p is dam good. Also the 120fps looks great and is not cropped.
My only concern with the NX1 was low light performance. I didn't need to see in the dark, I'm not conducting surveillance, so I light my scenes. I just wanted usable footage at 6400 iso or less. Fast glass took care of those concerns.
Battery life is great, no overheating,  memory cards cost half the price (don't need super fast cards) and store much more because of the codec. Files playback on any high-end android smartphone. It's a big win.

I think when comparing to a camera that is down-sampling from 6.5k, you had better bring your A-game. I'll just come out and say it. The Sony looks soft. Not just the FS5, but the entire Alpha line up.
There have been other post about this.

They can see the difference, they just can't put there finger on what it is... Plus if it's newer it must be better... Right?

So here is the long and short of it. The Beholder DS1 is heavy. It can get some very smooth shots, but you will be challenged to keep the shot on target for more than a very short while due to the weight. Additionally, I noticed something unexpected, certain movements can cause the unit to freak out. This results in a type of fast micro-jitters, that will appear as jerky image artifacting.
I wanted this unit to work smoothly. I do not know if this behavior is normal or if the unit is defective. But I can tell you normal handheld seems more pleasing to my eyes, despite being less smooth. Normal handheld just seems more organic.

Tbh there has been no official word from samsung or nikon, so all is speculation. But if true there is one thing you can count on,  you will be paying 3x the money for the nikon version of the NX1. Not sure if that's a win for anyone here. And don't expect Samsung's level of commitment as far as firmware upgrades go.  This is exactly why I bit the bullet and got the NX1. Unless my eyeballs are upgraded, the NX1 should be good enough for the next few years. At least until 8k is mainstream.

Here's a example of a classic film look as used to set the time period of the story. Taken from the movie "Man From Uncle".

Is not beauty in the eye of the beholder? In any case, I don't recall watching The Martian and thinking, "oh boy, I would really like to have that look in my productions". IMO, The Martian had a look reminiscent of Aliens ( I'm going by memory). It wasn't bad, but nothing I would feel compelled to achieve. And btw, lets not confuse in camera color from a $1k camera with the finished work from a $108 million dollar budget Hollywood blockbuster, with experts in cinematography, colorist, special effects, lighting, makeup, props and talent etc... In any case, I think many here would be curious to see what looks you have created with the NX1... and please share the settings. Who knows, you might have a winner?

FYI: Here is a little peak inside "The Martian"

I imagine most are interested in seeing footage shot from the 5 axis stabilizer you claim to have created,  not another 3 axis model. Notice I said from... you need to show the gimbal in action and the resulting unaltered footage. If you can't show this then pack up and go home.
