I think in a lot of the heavily graded films you cite, the skin tones are kept to an acceptable color while every other color goes nuts. That's the real talent of a world-class colorist.

Many people do not know what they are doing or why they are doing it when it comes to 'grading'. You can spot a professional colourist a mile away.

I don't have the GH5 yet, but here's a wish list and things I wish my GH4 had done:
    2.7 or 2.5K up to ~80-90fps, at 10-bit 4:2:2
    Focus punch-in while recording
Assign audio levels to one of the dials
Let us choose which settings C1, C2 etc change, and which are sticky/global. So that we could for example change between regular and overcrank framerates without having to reset white balance, picture profile, etc.
Let us choose which different options the Display button toggles through- for example I never use the Info screen (black grid with settings), and I'd love to not have to cycle past it when I'm trying to switch between the clean preview and the preview with settings.
A smart UI overhaul that makes better use of the touchscreen- more smartphone-ey I guess. Like the newer Blackmagic firmwares- swipe to bring in different displays, etc.

    This is a joke, right?
The Canon picture looks terrible. Blown out red channel, banding, no detail in dark areas, out of focus etc...
Looks like DR was crushed before pushing black into higher level.

ermmm... unlimited? There is some indication that overheating might eventually show up and it will revert to burst mode. It would take a long time or sitting it in direct sunlight to manage I think.

Well, maybe we need to save the grace going on with some filter in the front of the camera in order to put it soft, I guess. Apart, work @post.

The problem isn't the codec or IQ, it's the heavy internal processing like sharpening (it's an unsharp mask with 1.5 radius actually even at -5 sharpening) and noisereduction which cannot be bypassed.

DJI uses the same sensor with really cinematic results, by using no processing instead.

I said it looks nice but still videoy. To me something being filmic is not just technique but the quality of image itself - it emulates film. Digital systems like arri and red get close. Also you don't know what experience I have that led me to my opinions. Cameras like gh5 look nice but videoy. It's also thin like the pixels are spread over a sheet and if you blow on it it will move. Don't know why panny prosumer images feel this way to me but they do. But again that's just my opinion. Don't know why you think I'm being childish about it. I guess I hurt your feelings. If I did I apologize.
Crazy people are so sensitive about a thing like a camera. I guess these days people being a special snowflake isn't enough, there chosen brands need to be special too. To me it's there to tell my story and I always wish it worked better no matter the brand. Maybe these brands keep innovating because some of us are never satisfied. If it was all technique why are these product cycles getting shorter?

But, you've made it with your GH4... BTW, you should be hired for Lumix Luminary instead.

I actually trust Kholi as well, but not this time. Comparing V-Log to S-Log on the A7sII? C'mon...
If it is nearly as good as V-Log on the GH4 it'll put the A7sII to shame in terms of color science.

Watch my showreel to see what I mean:
    Almost 99% internal V-Log!

And yes, I've been using the a7sII quite a lot, always struggeling with the color, even using different profiles and combinations (such as Cine4, Slog2/3 SGamut 3.cine/3/2 etc). On the GH4 I just hit the portrait profile with:
    Contrast 0
    Sharpening -5
    NR -5
    Saturation -2
    Hue 1

And it looks almost identical to the color corrected RAW output of the FS5...

It's basically adding lots of saturation, then contrast using curves (find a proper black value using the waveform!), shifting the hues (bright green a bit to yellow, yellow a bit to orange, orange slightly to red, red a bit to magenta), desaturating shadows and highlights, desaturating bright oranges (helps for skintones as well), pushing gray or low saturation mid and dark tones (not black though, leave dark skin color the way it is!) to teal a bit, adding a bit of grain.

    That's it basically. :D

Man, your showreel is one of the best GH4 footy samples I and many others have ever seen here or everywhere else *thumbsup* Panasonic should take this in consideration for new releases. You 're Da Man... I already had watched it, just clueless you were posting in these boards. Grading is your surname, pal, kudos to your associates and clientele ; )

Reports in the media suggest Panasonic are dismantling the 'digital camera' division with some even speculating that Panasonic will pull out of the camera market like Samsung. In fact according to Yosuke Yamane of Panasonic, the company is re-doubling their focus on cameras like the GH5 and planning more releases in 2017.
