    Hey guys,

I´m a great fan of classic Andrew Reid stuff like this one telling about Richard Gales Nex5 mod.
Are there any other cool mods going on by Richard or others? I just think this looks so pretty:)
Here is this super cool article by Andrew:

The AF even in that video compared to the Sony stuff shows it's still pretty behind.  Maybe if they tweak the algorithms a bit they can improve it.  The Sony is really smooth whereas the Panny stuff is kind of abrupt, especially when it does the in and out when it finds focus.  The Sony of course is not god like all the time, especially at night, but when it works, it works so well you don't even notice it, whereas with the Panasonic you can tell the camera is doing something.

The terra 6k is shipping, ready to buy... The thing with the 5k is the same that got us exited about ursa mini at launch: global shutter. And really and cannot stress this enough: it IS handhold able, not shoulder mount heavy, handhold heavy, size wise is close to a 5d (remember the revolution the 5d II made? It wasn't only the price and sensor size, it was also the possibility of using it in your hand in thight spaces, the combination of size, weight, image quality). And ssd  as record media, from them or other vendors.

Come on guys, the birth of Atlas has arrived on NAB 2017, the first relatively affordable Anamorphics on the market. This is huge. Flare and coating is spot on.

elgabogomez reacted to ReinisK in Another 35nap 2 3 project
    Hello guys!
I'm new to anamorphic adapters, have never really looked into these things, but a week ago I saw a 35nap 2 3 projector lens on sale on a local advertisement site, and after a quick research I decided to take it home. It's huge and since I like to have my gear as small as possible, this didn't make me happy. But ok.
First thing I did was take it apart, to have only the lenses, so I could focus closer than 9m. Then I mounted the lenses on my rail system somehow, and tried to test the quality. The mounting system was quite bad, first results were not very encouraging, and I almost gave up on it. The picture was quite soft and of course the experience with double focus is not the best too.
Then I made a somewhat more stable mounting for the lenses so I could align them better. The front lens though is lower than taking lens and rear anamorphic element, but it seems, that it's nowhere near as important to align them vertically as to align the lenses horizontally (and also correct rotation), which immediately gives a sharper image.
I did the aligning using a Canon FD 70-210 f4 set at 200mm f4. It really helped to use such a narrow FOV to get critical sharpness. With the current setup though at 200mm f4 it's not very usable, but stopping down or using a wider FOV increases the sharpness, and once I got the best sharpness at 200mm, the sharpness with 35mm lens was just amazing.
All I can say is - I love the image and I'm really looking forward to making a nice mounting system for the setup. The image is supersharp and it seems like that all across the frame. I even couldn't believe it at first. I did this test with Samsung NX1 and Canon FD 35 f2. There were black sides though with this setup, but those can be cropped off.
Will post pictures with the setup soon and definetely some video examples.
The squeeze ratio seems to change very much depenting on the focus distance. 1m and below does squeeze the image a lot less than further distances. How do you cope with it?

Technical proficiency has never been an enemy of creativity. There is an expo in LACMA that pairs Picasso and Rivera's work from students to world renound paintors and the experimentation with all sorts of techniques only made them better focused on their message and masters of their style.
What makes you creative is not log or raw or 16bit, is the combination of your knowledge and life experiences with the moment you are capturing and your raw gut feeling.

The widest I've managed in apsc is 28mm (in video mode and cropped to 2.4:1). There is a guy on the anamorphic shooters group on Facebook that uses a 40mm on fullframe.

It looks amazing! Most of the time, you are right to say the stabilization is a little too much, maybe manually 35 \ 1.75 = 20mm would be better and avoid the little jumps and the vignette creeping in at random, I actually like a little vignetting in a shot but not being constant makes it distracting. How far away from the person in the shot do you have to be to a medium shot (waist to head) with your set up? 5 feet, 1.5m or so?
Your work is as hypnotic and engaging as always, keep it coming and thanks for it.

elgabogomez reacted to j169 in strange problem with anamorphic lens - seems ok except bokeh oval is wrong
Ah thank you Elgabogomez (and Justin). I'm new to this and still working it out. I have a clamp on the way from the US so once I get that, and I have a permanent 'fixed distance' between the taking lenses and the anamorphic I'll look at re-aligning the lenses again to tighten the focus, and then practice some more to see what I'm doing wrong.

Horizontal oval bokeh instead of vertical oval bokeh happens when the taking lens is on close focus and the anamorphic lens is on far focus, or in another words, when both lenses are not focused precisely at the same spot. Maybe the focus marks in your ana lens are off?

This is my first test of using the 6K 29,97p 3:2 ratio on the new GH5.
I'm happy with the results, please tell me what you think.
But I want to share my teething troubles working with the GH5.
1- The first question was which focal lens setting did I have to choose for the stabiliser. My prime lens is a 35mm, but did I have to include the 1,75x factor of the anamorphic, that is influencing only on the width ?
My first impression is that the internal stabiliser is not really the friend of anamorphic lens, some distortions or rolling shutter. There is some small moments in the movie that you can notice, but most of the strongest were unedited.
Because of the prime lens which is 35mm, and maybe the wildest I can use with my baby Hypergonar anamorphic lens, I had to zoom in the image sometimes, when it's in movement for example, to avoid moving vignetting in the frame. I did up to 17%.
2- the H265 codec that is used for the 6K mode
I had problems editing the 6K mode video. I have Premiere CC2017, but even when it downloads the H265 / HEVC codec, I couldn't really import the original files. Some of them were working, but most of them had strange result on the timeline with green colors. And not to mention the lag with playing the video, on Premiere or VLC.
I test it on two different iMac, mine that is a end 2012 with 24 Go of RAM, and at the university that is a 5k iMac with 8 Go.
So I transcoded the video with Handbrake, which surprisingly accept the 5184*3486 with H264 5.2 level. Then I decided to export directly in anamorphic without the black bars, in 5184*1976, then doing a same dimension sequence in Premiere.
Badfully I couldn't export the same dimension when I finished my edit on Premiere, so I did it in the maximum that my version of Premiere accept at my home : 4K (4096 maximum on the width).
When I will find the solution, I will export it in its original dimension 5184*1976.
Having troubles with a new camera and a "new codec" and new dimension "6k" is not new for me and I accept it I remember when a long time ago when I bought the GH1 I had to switch from Final Cut Pro 7 to Premiere to be able to edit the H264 clips directly on the timeline.
Thanks for watching the movie and do not hesitate giving me your opinion and your experience with editing 6K material from this new beast named GH5 !
    GH5 6K 5184*3486 3:2 29,97p export to 4k 29,97p anamorphic 4096*1560
prime lens : Qioptiq 35mm f1.6 wide open most of the time
anamorphic lens : baby Hypergonar 1.75x
focus module : SLR Magic Rangefinder Imperial
    ND filters : Hoya 32x, 4x and 2x
slight black and white levels / no color correction
cropping due to vigneting of the anamorphic due to the stabiliser from 0 to 17%
Thanks to Virgil for his GH5

Canon FD lenses are superb , great glass highly recommend , especially on soeedboosters , they are all manual focus , you cannot autofocus these lenses at all.
The primes are great and the zooms are also very good, 24-35mm l series , 35-70mm f4 zoom is steller for the money , 35-105mm 3.5 is also very good!!

Nikon 35-70mm f3.5 Macro works great for me. It zooms internally, so it sitting with the scope on rails work great. I'd have to check Focus, as I use this with a single focus solution.  Shot this with this set up on a RED Dragon.

Yeah, it is doubtful I will get one, but I cannot deny how great of a camera it is for the money and since the OP asked about the best cam at $3000... the LS300 definitely has to be considered. Also, I read that they are planning a 4K 60p firmware update... unsure if it's true... but definitely another bonus if it happens.
