barefoot reacted to IronFilm in Brainstorm a future $3,000 Samsung cinema camera!
    http://www.eoshd.com/2015/11/official-statement-samsung-withdraws-from-camera-market-in-germany/
Andrew suggested Samsung should make a cinema camera, and thought that is such a great idea it deserves its own thread. (waves to Samsung reps! Hopes they're reading....  one can but hope!)
I don't think it would take much more to get there (well.... it would be a significant sized project for Samsung for sure, but easily well within their grasp to pull off).

All they need to do is increase the size of the NX1 body the minimum amount needed so it can do this (perhaps C100/C300 shape/size? Although, I'd much much rather have the ergonomics of an FS5/FS7! But even if, g-d forbid, it has the shape of an FS100/FS700 then I'd still be "ok" with that that!):
Make space for dual mSATA slots, perhaps mSATA already in their own simple plastic casing like what Atomos does with SSDs (I think Sound Devices made a good choice going mSATA on their small PIX-E5 recorder, and in a small camera it makes even more sense over the large SSDs). Dual slots are needed so you can write a proxy to the 2nd slot, or just simply if you need the extra bandwidth when doing 6.5K raw at high speed. Can't stick with SD cards, as they won't handle 4K ProRes HQ, which leads me onto my next point.... Add DNxHR / ProRes, whichever licensing of DNxHR or ProRes is easiest for them to get. Though having ProRes HQ would be preferable I suspect over DNxHR (just because ProRes is more commonly recognised by the market, thanks to BMD and others widely using them), plus ProRes 444 or even raw would be dreamy! (but maybe a little unrealistic in a $3k camera?!) Add two XLR inputs.  Make its HDMI port a full sized HDMI port.  Add two SDI outputs (important to have two, what happens if one breaks? You'll have a nearly useless camera for many people, as SDI is for them *essential*. Plus is very common to run more than one monitor in a production environment, thus got to have two) I think if Samsung did this (and nothing else, just the five points listed above: mSATA + DNxHR/ProRes + XLR + full HDMI + SDI inputs) for US$3,000 then they'd have a huge huge indy cinema camera hit on their hands! The next DVX100 or 5Dmk2 of our generation??
Even if it came out at US$5k I reckon it could maybe still be rather successful, although it would be up against the URSA Mini 4.6K, Sony FS5, and Canon C100 mk2, all at a similar price point. (plus whatever else comes out in the next 6 months)
For bonus points Samsung could do:
Camera mount: just before, I'm assuming they're sticking with the Samsung NX mount that the NX1 has, and only making the body a little bit bigger. As Andrew mentioned perhaps their mount held back sales of the NX1, maybe this cinema camera should have a different mount? Ideally I'd like to see them use the Sony FZ mount (as this would mark it out as a true cinema camera, able to be used with the best of the best cinema lenses, yet also allowing tremendous flexibility with this mount!), next best choice would be using the Sony E mount, 3rd best is Micro Four Thirds (like the JVC LS300). Branding/marketing/licensing issues mean I expect sadly all of these are out of the question. Thus I feel the best Samsung can realistically do is create their own open cinema mount, which has similar features to the Sony FZ mount. But make it completely open and easy for anybody else to adapt. Thus Samsung will start off by selling their Samsung Cinema Camera with the high prestige PL Mount, but in a blink of an eye we'll see third party manufacturers offering adapters for everything you can possibly imagine (like they do now for the Sony FZ mount!). High Speed Options: apparently their engineers managed 6.5K 240fps in testing, maybe we could at least get this cinema camera to give us 1080p 240fps or 4K 60fps? High than 4K resolutions: give us all 6.5K resolution from the sensor!! :-o Raw: need I say any more? This could hit it out of the park!
What are your thoughts? Remember, it should be based on the existing underlying NX1 technology (so not too much more R&D is needed for Samsung to get it to market), or using commonplace readily available tech (such as mSATA, or SDI connections) and hit a US$3k price point or at least not more than a couple thousand over that.

You're right. It does perform like a webcam more than a proper phone camera.
Also, if the blackness of the material is significantly proportionate to its light (and presumably heat -- cooling must be a pain) collecting abilities, I'd be interested to see what they'd make of the blackest man-made material, carbon-nanotube that absorbs 99 percent of light.

I used to have one but it never felt 100% reliable.
This week I decided to give it another go as I'd upgraded my PC rig. By chance the hardware was all on the recommended list at TonyMacx86
    http://www.tonymacx86.com/building-customac-buyers-guide-october-2015.html
The most temperamental bits are graphics, sound, bluetooth and wifi but 100 google searches later and a lot of late nights, eventually you will get it stable. Mine even sleeps!!
I recommend a USB sound card, they tend to 'just work'.
Also I recommend Unibeast to do the install, then Multibeast to do the drivers post-install bit... Clover was too advanced, I didn't get it as well.
It is now stable, was having random freezes due to Intel integrated graphics being enabled and for whatever reason not working, so disabled that and now it is fine.
However there are still the occasional bugs, like Resolve 12 saying it is out of GPU memory on a 4GB card after a few minutes... hmm.
Verdict - if you are of technical knowledge with the time and can risk the occasional crash in the middle of work, go for it. If you just want a ultra stable system which will work immediately, avoid like the plague!
    My hardware:
    CM Storm Stryker case
    4096MB MSI GeForce GTX 970 Gaming 4G PCIe 3.0 x16 (Retail)
    MSI Z97 GAMING 5 Intel Z97 So.1150 Dual Channel DDR3 ATX Retail
    16GB G.Skill TridentX DDR3-2400 DIMM CL10 Dual Kit
600 Watt Corsair CX Series Non-Modular 80+ Bronze
    Intel Core i7 4790K 4x 4.00GHz So.1150 BOX
I went for OSX Yosemite. Although you can put El Capitan on there it might not be as stable, since it is so new. On my genuine Macbook Pro I have major issues with Premiere under El Capitan related to CUDA and GPU acceleration.
Best to dual boot from separate SSD. They are so cheap now, just have two drives.
By the way don't try and put a virtual Windows partition on your Mac RAID array like I once did!! The Windows installer damaged the RAID config and I had to spend hours in data recovery software, as well as buying 3 extra 4TB HDDs to backup to. Was an unpleasant experience to say the least, so keep Windows as far away from your Mac as possible

I think Canon is acting pretentious, it reminds me a lot of Nokia.

In the early 2000's/late 90's it was unthinkable buying a phone that wasnt Nokia, every other phone was "crap", so they kept doing the same thing, phones barely upgraded between generations and in a  very short period of time, Iphones came and smartphones....and no Nokia has 1-3% market share.
Canon is getting left behind, and when they decide "its time to move" it may be too late, because you need time for try and error, and they will loose so much ground (I suspect by this time, next year, they will have lost probably 50%). The rebel line is good enough for beginners/enthusiasts, but even that market is getting shadowed by the uprising of Iphones and other samsungs.
IMO they deserve everything that its coming, they spend most of their time crippling their own equipment so that they can protect their overpriced cinema line.
*I upgraded to the NX1 about 2 months ago, and even though im still getting used to it, I dont consider going back to a dslr. Might get an a7 or a7s if the price is right (around 500-700€ thats what im willing to spend).

Still could be 2 years at least till it goes from this to what we have.  Obviously the money lies in the smartphones.  Then small cameras, then film.  So let's see.  But this is exciting news.

Also curious to see what it looks like side by side a real camera, not their "fake" iphone video-ish camera. My samsung galaxy s4 takes better video than that.  And the iphone 6s takes much better video than that with more dynamic range. Or at least in my head it does.

for me this is one of the most useful color grading videos I have seen - the amount of work he does in each scene is remarkable.

Basically he throws a lut on the end - even though it feels like it throws it on first - it's an output lut.
then he makes the shot overall color, then tweaks the low, mids, and highs.  he adds power windows - brings down the window - lowers exposure on stuff you don't want to see - other than where the action is - and in these shots it's the person talking.
then he goes into the faces - he usually adds a power window to bring up the exposure on the face where he wants it.
then he isolates the skintones, gets those to look healthy, then he does secondary correction, like making the lips more red and adding some highlights to the head.
God, overall, as I say it again and again, as long as you are shooting with as much color information as you can on the camera you can get - the colorist does a ton of heavy lifting in addition to how well the DP can light the scene in the time alloted.
but the difference between hollywood and small films is usually in the grading, beyond good lighting, composition, etc - this is so often forgotten.
And this is why I go bonkers when I shoot something on the alexa and it comes out and looks bad.  I mean, I screwed up in how I shot it and lit it - I can't free myself of blame, but many times the piece goes to a colorist and I have no way to communicate with that person on style and look and it comes out screwbally.
I wish production and post worked together more.
But anyway I guess this is a weird way to learn about film worked since I have hardly shot anything on film.  Film hits the telecine since the 90s and is turned into a log called cineon and from there gets tweaked and then put out on an answer print - and back then they would simulate the answer print with a LUT.
So I guess all this is part of how people have been shooting films for a while now.

The extra time spent pulling hair in every project grading the s-gamut could definitely be put to better use elsewhere. That's why recently I canceled the A7S II order for a Samsung NX1 (order placed already). For 1/3 the price, it's a much more capable machine (skin tone, battery, build). The major trade off being dynamic range. I'm fine with not having IBIS for 1/3 the price; I was already planning on a Nebula 4200lite, even if I had gotten an A7S II.
But I am still rooting for Sony. Like Samsung, on a greater scale, they are kicking a lot of asses. I do hope Sony pulls through with future models. There's no excuse for getting the basics wrong (like poor battery life) on a $3000 dslr-sized camera from a company with such tremendous goals (like their possible 21-stop sensor.)

I reckon that should share the same mount as the pre mirrorless Sony Alphas (A mount). As it has electronic contacts, I doubt you would get aperture control like you can with Nikon lenses.
    EDIT:
I stand corrected! This seems to work, but it's fairly costly: http://www.videogear.co.uk/Lens-Mount-Adapters/Novoflex-Adapter-Minolta-AF-/-Sony-Alpha-Lenses-To-Samsung-NX-Cameras/prod_2417.html

We use the AL-H198, 672W, 672S, and Light Storm LS1s (all 95+ CRI) and LS1/2 (98+ CRI).  Suggest avoiding the bicolor models (not as bright). These are the first LEDs we've used with really good color for skin tones. They are good enough for still photography as well: almost as good as strobes for skin color.
Putting gels on lower color-accuracy LEDs will never look as good due to spectral spikes (we tried). The LS1's have barn doors which come in very handy for attaching the included tracing paper to produce excellent diffuse light. The LS1/2 clips the tracing paper much closer (no barn doors); not quite as diffuse- perhaps better to bounce off a reflector if more diffusion is needed.

    Hi!
For interviews (or photography) I always use diffuse light. So having a spot light is better for 2 reasons: Stronger light output (the light's power is focused), so you can even compete with sun light in some cases. And 2nd, it's easier to control, the W (wide) sends light in all directions. I prefer to have control over it. I use mine with a softbox with a grid:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Andoer-Umbrella-Reflector-Honeycomb-Speedlite/dp/B00U8M4P2O/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1444990240&sr=8-5&keywords=Andoer+80cm
I would avoid the C (color) versions, because they have half the light output, as someone pointed out above. And the included warm color gels work fine. But it all comes down to your workflow. This review helped me out when I bought mine:
    http://eriknaso.com/2015/01/11/aputure-hr672s-led-video-lights-first-look/
II thought the YN600 didn't have a cast until I got the Aputures. Huge difference!! And worst thing about them... noise, when that fan kicks in, it can ruin a interview.

    Hi barefoot!
If I'm not wrong, the H528's are 88 to 95 CRI, not 95 (they just write 95 in the info). So you could see a color shift. I've got 3 Aputure lights:  HR672S, HR672W and a smaller AL-H198C, and all 3 are 95+. I really like them... nice balanced light, with no tints, they don't overheat and they're completely silent. I also have a Yongnuo YN-600, and it's got a strong magenta tint to it, and it's very noisy. The HR672's comes with 2 NP batteries included (which ain't cheap), and cost around 160 quid. If you are going to bounce or filter your lights, I recommend the HR672S (Spot) model. It's brighter, and easier to control...
Light Storm looks great, but it's still a bit pricey (you can get 3 HR672's for the same money)... But they do look great!
    Hope it helps!

If you go into it I recommend starting with a desktop build, rather than converting a laptop. Its much harder to get compatible laptop components wise, but it can fun, I have a Surface Pro that runs Yosemite really well. The installation process is so easy these days and websites like TonyMac have excellent guides.
