exactly. If canon does not release a new 5d mk. whatever in 2 years, we will be seeing 5d mk.IIIs on sets for the next two years. They work, get the job done, everyone knows how to work with them...as simple as that. It is called an industry standard. You have fender and gibson guitars, there are thousands of guitars out there that do the same thing and tons of other things as well...guess what are the most used guitars on the planet.

I shot 3 "making of " of mainstream music videos this year. 3 diferent DPs, 3 diferent directors. 80% was shot on 5Dmk3 and the rest which was slow mos on fs700. There are plenty of 4k cameras in this price range, but I guess people are just used to the 5d image and it works. By the look of things I predict that 4k will become mainstream once canon releases a 4k 5d camera.

I do alot of sport, news coverage and there are always hundreds of photographers...I don`t think I saw 5 of them over the summer using anything else that canon/nikon. 99% of the pro market belongs to them and consumers buy what they see pros are using. I would say that canon is doing fine.

one more question for budget nikon users...I have always set my expousure to the right ETTR with canon dslrs, but I have always used magci lantern. I usually just set the expousure until I saw zebras and then pulled back a bit. how do you do ETTR on nikons and be sure you are not blowing out the highlights?

no, the nx1...1080p and 4k comparison. But it might become a bit irrelevant now, since samsung seems to be officialy killing the camera bussines. Price drops to come maybe?

Well, I one feature for a weekly automotive tv show every week with a 550d, so I would not call it unusable far better that the eng cameras they used before. But yes, I agree that look wise the 5300/5500d is a far better camera than others in the price range. I just wish you could set the wb in kelvins.

The a6000/a5100 and g7 were my first picks, based on price, specs and ability to adapt just about any lens...especialy the a6000. I watched probably hundrets of clips of those online and it all sucked except a few. The green/yelow cast in sony skintones and overall britle and digital looking image of the g7...I thought it was just peoples unabiliti to grade, until I got to borow it(a6000) The skin looked ok-ish in sunlight, but horible under lights. I tried all of the picture profiles, got white balance spot on, used pro arri lights. The client prefered the 550d by far and so did I. a friend has the 5300, I asked him for some clips and just about everything was spot on in all the shots and just about every video I see it looks good at least. Untill there is a proper mirrorless camera by canon or nikon it will have to do.

ok, I have read just about everything there is to read about nikon HDMI out and nowhere online I have found anything where nikon would state the framerate out of the hdmi. I just say clean HDMI and nobody seems to be getting 24/25p to a ninja. This is a bummer...I could live without a ninja, just record to the card, but getting by without live zebras/histogram...dunno. It`s what I use 99% of the time on my 550d and ML.

You can use any profile you want and thats how it is recorded to the external recorder. Prores ussualy turns out a bit flater from my experience. Audio is pretty basic but better than all of the dslr I have tried.

Nikon mount tokinas are reverse focus as well??? That make very little sense...are you sure? I know that tamron uses nikon rotation for the most part, but others as well? The tokina 28-70 2.8 is my favorite lens, I have it in pentax mount and I wanted to get one in nikon mount as well. Anyway...I do eng work every day, and work on many projects as a focus puller...I kinda don't want to get used working the reverse way as it may interfeer my paying jobs. The 60p is a must also 25p hdmi, so the d5200 is out, but thank you for reminding me about the d3300. At this point I'm practicaly buying the camera just for the sensor. I have it on a rig most of the time so ergonomics are not that impostant to me. Any yes, the thing I will miss the most about letting go my 550d is cheap lenses...oh well. I really wanted to like the a6000 just because it opens up a whole new world of lenses, but theres just something off about the picture it produces, and there is just something right about nikon.

I can get a great deal on a new d5200 with the 18-105 lens. I was gonna get the d5300...is there much diference? I`ll be using it with an atomos ninja2/blade. The only reason that I haven`t already bought it was the lenses...I hate the reverse focusing, but I`ll live with it for the work that I do right now. But for everything else I`ll be needing new lenses(those that I have now are won`t fit). So what non nikon primes are available besides samyang? Or should I just get a reverse gear follow focus...just got a new non reversilble :/

you can get a very cheap 4k to 2k downscaler for cameras that have 4k hdmi out only. works great, most of them you can power with a cheap cell phone battery bank for hours and hours. I used this setup with a gh4 and ninja blade.

Unless it's a new thing in the samurai, othervise no. I just used cheap 20€ 4k-2k downscaler and it worked. Ninja 2 or ninja blade seem to be the better alternatives now that the prices have droped. The screens arent the best out there but perfectly usable.

this!!! The one and only reasson I don`t own a Nikon camera. Only once I did a shoot with one and after one hour of going crazy I was fortunate enough to have a follow focus with reversable gear on set.

Well, the workflow is not bad if you ask me...compared to other raw cameras is just one step more. It's the file sizes and what you want to use it for. It's fine if you shoot a cat or some plant, but you will not be shooting a weding, a non acted documentary... for raw it's probably the best budget camera out there, and a very capable 1080p h.264 camera. I prefer it to a gh4 except for the slow motion.

I have been kinda folowig this and it seem like a one man operation...it might take a long long time if ever for this to be somewhat reliable. And he is working only on d5100, so it's not just getting it right there and they just enabling the same thing on other nikons. But othervise, the guy is a champ either he gets it working or not. If he does I will gladly buy my first nikon camera
