Cheers. It was a quick test with Magic Lantern x5 crop mode with diopters on a regular anamorphic setup...I could have gone way closer, if I used a different taking lens (and will do in my next test).

So to answer the question, it was a bit of both - closeup ability, with an effective sensor crop of the full frame by using ML crop mode. The subject of these stills was a 3inch diameter glass ball with shower gel/glitter and other liquids poured over it - and let to run down the surface to diffract and sparkle at different depths. It was an experiment to see how easy it is to create ambient light / fluid effects.

    Password: macro

Ive got lots of old enlarger lenses I've put into Chinese helicoids that work really great for macro work...extreamly sharp and extreamly cheap, so I'll probably dig those out soon for a better test.

This is so badass. Very creative and cool looking Hans.

To give a rough idea of the macro anamorphic setup I've configured - here are some stills from a video I shot late last night (hence the bloodshot eye). The actual moving image is terrible, as I was filming my own eye and looking at a monitor so is very shaky. The focus plane is crazy thin, so these are really not as sharp as is possible to get when setup is more controlled.

Image 1 is result from full 16x9 ML raw capture with 1.75x anamorphic and diopters (16x9 desqueezed to show centred focus plane in context )

Image 2 is 5:3 ML raw + crop mode desqueezed (crop mode is 1:1 crop of sensor)

Image 3 is same as Image 2...(it's my top lip btw - not my 'front brush')

Images all lit with iphone torch - hence the horrible shadow green skin tones. Images 2 & 3 will make some wonderful profile pictures for my online dating application methinks.

ML crop mode is killer for macro work, as it effectively windows the sensor to 1:1 where higher resolution raw recording options can be selected as well as turning any lens into 3-5x it's rated focal length.

5DMKIII ML raw - 100mm taking lens on +1 macro ring - Kowa Inflight 1.75x - Tokina +0.4 - Various power singlet close up lenses (+4+2+0.5)

Focus distance was approx 12 inches.

Last off topic post on this thread, but you should submit a pic to @dog_rates, my favorite twitter account. They have over a million followers. That picture of her looking over the fence for her best friend might not be your best pic, but the story that goes along with it is just too cute.

Cyberphoto still has the a great deal on a NX1. Its used but Mint and with warranty.

Please someone buy it before I do :)

    -NX1 + 2 batteries + 16-50 S + Vertical Grip + external Charger € 1200

Its a bit more than I paid for my last two NX1 kits but still very good price imo.

I just checked your instagram for the first time in ages, was curious to see how Gunpowder the Dog was doing, and this photograph of ducks is incredible.

  4. Smart move to do some tests and then decide. You sound pretty happy with what you've got. A lot of Canon people seem to get super disappointed when moving to another system. But, if you end up preferring the GH5, get what you can out of the Canon. Not like you won't be able to buy another one down the road, probably for much less.

  5. Pentax released that 77mm prime for portraits back in the film days and a lot of people love that lens. The Fuji equates to 76mm. Still think a 56mm f2  would have made more sense. He said someone at Fuji told him one of the reasons they went with 50mm is for all the people who grew up in the APSC era and had a nifty fifty as their first prime. They like and are comfortable with the focal length. That 90mm is really something else. Incredible lens from what I've seen. Was just watching a comparison of it and the 56mm the other day.

What would you like to see in it?

Personally I would be happy with 4K, not for the resolution but for less artifacts. And of course the low RS of the E-M1ii.

I'd like to see the new hybrid autofocus but I doubt it will have it. Also figure it'll have less robust weather sealing/build and some of the photography features will be less impressive. So what will it gain from the EM1ii? I'm guessing it will have the same stabilization system and sensor. Maybe some video features that the EM1ii doesn't have. All for half the price of an EM1ii.

3 minutes ago, Mattias Burling said:

One can hope. The current E-M5ii is sitting in quite a weird spot as very little would make one get it instead of the Pen-F (new sensor) for a little more or the E-PL8 (same sensor) for a lot less.
Not to mention the very affordable and smaller E-M10ii with 95% of the features.
So maybe it will get an update a bit sooner.

Keep in mind the first EM5 was a ton of camera for the money and made a big splash when it was released. I don't think the EM5ii has had anywhere near the same impact so maybe they'll refresh it sooner. Also, John Brawley once said that Olympus viewed the EM5 cameras as being the more videocentric cameras while the EM1 was more geared towards photographers and at present the EM1ii outclasses the EM5ii in terms of video. Things might've changed, but if it's still the case that EM5 is more for videographers, I'm hoping the EM5iii will have better video specs. Not sure what they would be though. It looks like Olympus threw everything they had into the EM1ii. One thing with Olympus, they likely will improve both cameras through firmware.

  7. Curious how close to an EM1ii the EM5iii will be. There was a three year wait between the EM5 and EM5ii but both were announced in early February. So maybe they'll announce the EM5iii in a few weeks.

I hear you! It's just that after using Lumix cameras now for the past four years or so, and having had to re-think everything I've been taught to believe from forum members here and at other sites, particularly regarding Photo Style settings, using adapters, LUTs and so on, that I'm starting to question every remark I see online, which I'm not sure is a healthy thing. Then there's the fact that I want to grow as a filmmaker and I'm not at all sure where I'm going with that. As for what kind of information I'd be interested in hearing from you - for example, I often wondered why someone would intentionally underexpose an image two stops; I've never had to underexpose a shot, then bring up the shadows: it seems like a recipe for introducing noise and banding in the image - I see embarrassing examples of this all the time on Vimeo. But listening to Paul Nelson explain how he often shoots athletes in shaded woods, and how he underexposes to retain detail in the sky at sunset, then lifts the shadows in post, and now I understand that there's a time and place for underexposing shots, and at the same time, this obsession with wide dynamic range and low noise. When I was studying French at university, we had to learn French culture as well as language, and we were tested on both. Some students complained that they just wanted to learn the language. But you can't learn one without the other. So, I guess I'd just like to hear more about your experiences a filmmaker, your workflow, how you overcame certain difficulties, anything but specs!

This was a good interview with him that covers a lot of his background

If they give you all that they will find another way to disappoint.

You're not a fan of Sony are you Mattias? Not putting you on the spot or picking a fight. I could be wrong. But I remember you were a fan of the BPCC, the NX1, Fuji, Red, Leica, that Canon camcorder that a lot of people hated, and some Panasonic. Off the top of my head I can't recall you being very fond of any Sony cameras. Maybe some of their phones.

The A7S: HE (Hollywood Edition) has a groundbreaking new feature, in which you can map ISO sensitivity by touchscreen to different pixels in the image, so you no longer need any lighting whatsoever!

I like your thinking. That would be an awesome feature.

With 4k 60fps, Higher bitrate codec, Redisgned colors science, Bigger battery, Bigger grip, 6500 focussing system, 10bit 4:2:2, Full frame 120fps in Full HD[slow motion playback]

In less than 3500usd. Sony can you make it?

Seems like there should be a A7iii before too long and then an A7riii followed by an A7siii. I wonder if they'll keep the A7 in the lineup, like they have with all those RX100 models. Seems like a weird strategy to me.

28mm F2 would be her preference, but - as known - there is no stabilisation for spontaneous hand-held shots. So she should buy the stabilized 35mm 1.8. She already took a look at the 18-105mm F4 OSS and it seems to be a good lens, but as the thread is named, "one woman, one lens" and not "one woman + dozens of lenses". As my father and me already collect Canonikon lenses, we need an "purist" in our family... ;-)

Off topic, but do you have a preference for vintage Canon or Nikon glass?

Thanks Flynn...but the Sigma has no stabilization...and many buyers currently have problems with the optical quality (not sharp at all) when using F 2.0 +/-. Sigma knows about the issue, but there is no solution till now. Googling on this topic (or taking a look at reviews of verified buyers - Amazon Germany) will reveal the massive problem (not all owners have it, but quite a lot)... --> Amazon site with reviews (German) <--

Thanks. I'd only heard great things about the Sigma so that is disappointing. I can't remember your criteria. You want a fast smallish lens with stabilization? I guess the only choice is the 35mm and 50mm. Out of those two I'd pick the 35mm. But I'd prefer the Sony 28mm f2, because I find that a more useful focal length on APSC, but it doesn't have stabilization. Do you know if she has a focal length that tends to feel right to her?

Okay, thanks, that clarifies it. Because there was no mention of a 27mm in the press release for the two new cameras Mattias mentioned.

Oh, I see what threw you off. Yes, I was just making a general comment about the system, nothing to do with the press release. I love Fuji but those are the three things I wish were different. Really only two of them are a big deal to me- the 27mm and the ibis. Other than those two things I think it's an excellent system. And again, I apologize for coming across as rude/unclear in my initial response.

  13. 14 minutes ago, jonpais said:

Pardon me for asking, but which 27mm lens are you referring to?

I'm guessing that designing a 55mm f/2 as compact as their popular 23mm and 35mm lenses would be more difficult.

And you wish that the 18-55mm had better stabilization or that Fuji bodies had IBIS? Because when you say 'I wish they had stabilization as good as Olympus's', you are implying that Fuji cameras already have IBIS

    It takes beautiful pictures.

And I wish they had in body for all these wonderful primes.

  14. 35 minutes ago, jonpais said:

Could you clarify? I can't follow anything you're saying here. If you weren't a forum member in good standing, I'd swear this was spam.

I'll ignore your insulting tone and clarify.

    1. 40-43mm is my favorite focal length. 35 is too wide and 50 is too long. 42 is just right imo. So I wish the 27mm was faster. F2.8 for a prime on apsc, especially one that would be my favorite lens, is too slow imo.

    2. I don't like 50mm for portraits (with apsc). I'd prefer the new f2 was 55mm or 56mm like the more expensive lens.

    3. I wish they had stabilization as good as Olympus. For obvious reasons.

Not sure why you felt any of this needed clarification but there you go.

And I do apologize if that response was unnecessarily combative. The spam comment rubbed me the wrong way and I was a bit more feisty than I probably should have been.
