Photo Rumors says it's gonna be €3,799. If video is your thing, that seems like a crazy sum to pay for this. Have to think you can buy some solid video cameras for that amount. But I know everything is more expensive in Europe (except health care) so maybe not.

For me as 50/50 Stills/Video it looks like good deal... I sold my A7s and i´m thinking about to get a mark VI.

For me its the Colors, they look pleasing out of the box, how the mark III renders light feels completely different to Sony.

I never used DPAF but just imagine to put in on my Ronin and stop think about focus (more or less) is truely awesome.

For only video shooters go and get a video camera guys...

If i shoot something more important such an interview i will grab my bmmcc.

Whats my alternative ? a d750 without 4k and DPAF.

I think the mark IV will be a work horse for guys like me.

    PS. sorry for my englisch.

Do you have to have full frame? It just sucks this will not be a 1DC replacement as well as a great stills camera. Pretty sure the primary focus will be on stills.

Why not use the MXF codec from the XC10 for 4K? seems odd... 500mbits is bonkers.

Probably cause they limit stuff like that to what they consider their cinema line and they don't see this as one of those cameras, though I'm sure they expect it to get a lot of use from indy filmmakers.

@Mattias Burling "4K from a GH4. Sony A7s or other low bitrate shooters doesn't look as good as upscaled HD from a good camera imo."

A carefully shot and edited 4K image looks much better than any Canon FHD. I've used for meany years the 5D2 for video work and was a revolutionary tool for it's time, but now even in RAW looks old. It is ok to have different preferences and opinions but what you just said is very untrue. On a 4K or bigger screen, FHD looks bad in comparison to a good 4K.

Just remember, Gh4 + an external recorder brings 4K at 10 bit4:2:2 to the table, a very good image at a price under 5D mk 3.

Yeah, it's remarkable what the GH4 can already provide. Now imagine how much better the GH5 and GH6 will be. Both of these should come out before we see a 5D mkV. I know cameras are more than a spec sheet, but I'm not understanding the excitement. Maybe it will be incredible though.

Have you shot any 5D III RAW footage? As for narrative at least for me it also blows away any GH4, A7S. For event filming and such I would agree to shoot on a A7SII or GH4, as the edit needs to be delivered fast.

I agree that the 5D raw footage is stunning but it's not Canon that is providing it. It's yet to be seen if and when Magic Lantern can provide similar capabilities in this camera. If they can, this camera should be much more useful.

  4. You've got so many devices that can do 4k now, it's not like it's a rare thing anymore. I guess Nikon is making the cheapest DSLR possible and the parts they're reusing just can't handle 4k. I doubt many of the people this camera is targeting will choose this over their cell phone, which might even shoot 4k.

I'm still rocking a 5d Mark 3 with H.264 and its performing just fine for most gigs. More detail and Dual Pixel AF is all I need. A moderate upgrade in the slowmo department is welcome too.

Why will you choose this over another camera in the $3,000-4,000 range? Seems like there are options that are a better choice for someone doing video. Or do you need something that can do stills and video well in one camera? The dual pixel is nice to have but you can now pick up a new C100 mkii for not much more money.

If true it will rock. Its gonna keep Canon at the top of the sales lists for years.

You think these specs "rock" compared to what other companies are currently offering and what they'll be offering in the coming years? I'm not seeing it. But I'm sure Canon will sell tons of them because so many are already heavily invested in their system and this will be more than enough for most of them.

People should take a look at this. This footage looks gorgeous, I only saw a couple strange jitters when the camera was suction mounted to the car, might've given the camera body too much vibration for the 5 axis stabilization to handle. Overall though, this was done with a BM Video assist, occasional bounce light and the Oly 12mm and the Oly 9-18mm. That is fucking GOOD LOOKING STUFF for what is used here. Olympus is unmatched with stabilization, this is all handheld and it looks outstanding. Still 8 bit but hard not to be impressed. The narrative and song are not my cup of tea at all, but the imagery is great.

  7. I certainly don't think Red looks bad, not that my opinion matters (I'm one of those hobbyists you mentioned and admittedly far from an expert). I actually think Red looks pretty fantastic. I've just heard my favorite cinematographer (Roger Deakins) and others rave about the Alexa. But I'm sure there are some who love Red just as much.

As a documentarian, I've totally let go of big rigging.  While I love to shoot on an Alexa, if I'm rolling through the day with a subject and need to keep a low profile, these stabilized M43 cams are just so incredibly practical.  No, the IQ isn't as perfect as other cameras.  But, as seen above, it doesn't really need to be.  Shoot wise and your footage will look great.

I bet Olympus will be able to make the stabilization just a little better with the EM1 mkii. Imagine a camera with their stabilization combined with Canon's dual pixel autofocus. It would be an incredible tool for documentarians wanting to use a small form factor.

Spent some time looking at Kinefinity footage after some posts on this thread and the image is beautiful. Surprised there isn't more interest in it. They've got some traded in versions of the Kinemini on their website pretty cheap too. I think I like the image more than BM.

It's been on my plans for a while, but I want a real script instead of just random shots for these, as I'm not really testing anything, just showcasing. :P

As for the purple aperture, I did very few tests before sending it away, and there was just NO WAY to compete with the orange/amber version.

Well I dig what you do and appreciate all the hard work you put into it. I'm learning a lot.

  11. Tito, I wish you would consider some future videos where you combine modded lenses with 1.33, 1.5, 1.75, and 2 to see what kind of looks you can achieve. Also, that lens where you made the aperture purple, I wanted to see what the pics/video would look like after you were finished but I don't think you posted any. Anyway, thanks for all you do. Love the vids.

  12. Adorama has the GX8 with a free 12-60mm lens and a $150 gift card for $997.99. They also have the G7 with the 14-140mm, a free 25mm 1.7, and a $150 gift card for $997.99. Not only that, but you can save $100 on the 42.5mm 1.7, so with the $150 gift card you end up getting it for $97. Imagine, you can get the 14-140, 25, and 42.5 plus a G7 for around $1,094.99. Seems like a good deal to me, especially if you don't have any m43 glass.

The sensor is only part of the story - the processor is another. It's simply not true that u4/3 sensor tech has stood still while APS sensors have made huge strides. Panasonic is going to be a leader in sensor technology, with its patents for organic sensors, PDAF, 8K, a light-field sensor and other innovations. The GH5 will probably have the same sensor as the GX85, but an improved processor. But this thread is about the GX85, not the GH4 or upcoming GH5. And Panasonic's GX85 rangefinder has IBIS, which is lacking in their closest rival's camera, the Sony A6300. It also has a fully articulating touch screen, another feature Sony has inexplicably left out. And the GX85 doesn't have any issues with overheating, which the Sony cameras famously suffer from. And then there are those who aren't overly fond of Sony's colors, or confusing menus. So, they have got some things right, I just don't think I'd purchase it as my primary camera. It is not a replacement for the GH4.

I never said the sensor is the whole story, but it's a big part of the story. I also never said they've stood still, but compared to the advancements we've seen from APS and Full Frame in recent years, the improvements in m43 have been weak. If they recycle a sensor for the GH5 and only manage to get slight improvements out of it thanks to processing, many of their customers will be disappointed. I saw a videographer who was working at the RNC convention say it seemed like everyone who was shooting mirrorless had switched to the A7s and had dropped Panasonic. He did not see a single GH4, which surprised him, because at one point it was a popular camera. It's why I think Panasonic needs to delay the release of the GH5 until they can put something like that amazing organic sensor you mentioned, and they announced years ago, in it. As far as the thread being about the GX85, you're right, but there has already been plenty of discussion about the GH4 and GH5 in this thread, which is why I made the comment. I think it's critical for Panasonic to get the GH5 right or they risk losing even more ground to Sony.

    Brace yourself for....                     disappointment.

Unless you absolutely have to use the same camera for stills and video, I don't know why anyone who primarily shoots video would get this instead of a dedicated video camera. In this price range you have some much better options for video. Unless this camera turns out to be a 1DC replacement. Which it will not.

  15. That you don't wish to respond to? Example A: you hit the quote button but decide you don't want to quote the person and just want to respond. But everytime you try to respond the quote now appears and you can't just make a reply. The forum keeps adding the quote. Can you turn this off? Example B is you do want to quote someone but you hit the backspace button before replying, because the cursor is too low, and the cursor ends up in the quote box. At that point it is simply impossible to contstruct a reply as far as I can tell. Nothing you do can get the cursor back underneath the quote. Is there anyway to turn off some of the automated stuff that seems unique to this forum?
