Canon is being Canon.  No DPAF in 4K and ridiculous crop.  I wonder how terrible the rolling shutter is.  I'm surprised how much hype is around this camera that has useless 4K.

Hopefully this video will show dissuade you from buying a 5D4 if you need 4k.  From my personal tests, the rolling shutter is so bad you can even see the lag when doing a closeup on someone's face even when you're not panning.  They compare the rolling shutter to the 1DX2 which is far better in 4K when it comes to rolling shutter.

Have you ever shot with the 5D4? because it sounds like baseless erroneous assumptions you are making here.. fyi FHD has improved since the 5D3.
As for C-Log it is far from useless.. for matching footage from other C-log cams, getting creative with grades or extending DR.. it doesn't seem to break much on the "dinosaur codec"

Michael Ma got a reaction from jonpais in Canon - the REAL technical and political reasons behind the lack of decent video
If you remember the original launch of the 5D Mark II, it didn't include 1080p 24p.  Only after a public outcry, Canon caved to the public demand and released a firmware update that included 24p.
    https://prolost.com/blog/2010/3/1/canon-adds-24p-to-the-5d-mark-ii-and-i-blame-you.html
So looking back, Canon has been trying to limit video capabilities to be on their photo cameras, even on the launch of the 5D Mark II.  But they cannot stop the momentum of the market demand that was forced on them, which they had a big part in creating.

For many that have moved away from Sony, they'd need to improve the following:
    * Figure out the overheating issue
    * Improve their color science
    * Move to an IBIS that really works and is demonstrably superior to just an OIS lens alone
    * Implement 4K60p...again, without overheating
    * A flip out VF would be nice, thank you.
I'd be surprised to see if they really come up with something competitive to the GH5, but I'd certainly like to see that happen. It just seems to me that Sony is so set in their ways, they rarely deviate from the path.
I've used Sony cameras for years, so I'd like to see them give Panasonic a run for their money. The more competition the better.

I really like this guy's videos.  If somebody is taking a magnifying glass to the dark shadow areas the image, the real failure is the composition of the shot.  Noise only becomes a problem when it steals away focus from the message.  ISO 6400 is clean enough where it should never happen.  At 12800, I think it the composition needs to be strong for things like b-roll.

It sounds great.  Same crop with the GH5 with metabones XL.  But if you don't already own the metabones, that puts the GH5 + metabones at nearly the same price range as the 5D4 if you go gray market.  And I'm going to guess 8-bit C-LOG 4:2:2 is more or less on par, and maybe easier to grade than 10-bit V-Log 4:2:2.

GH5 Advanages (even after 5D4 update)
IBIS Fully articulating swivel screen Video tools such as focus peaking, waveform, vectorscope Legendary Panasonic Battery life (Canon's video recording battery consumption rate is quite high). 4K 60p (vs 3K 60p on the 5D4) No 30-minute recording limit Less rolling shutter
    5D4 Advantages:
DPAF Canon skin tones Full frame 1080p (unchanged) Full frame pictures
Conclusion:  GH5 is still a great purchase.  I wouldn't cancel your preorder.

Ah yes, 42.5mm!  The repair guy did the same type of subjective test initially.  If it wasn't for your assurance that it wasn't normal, I might still have the blurry center.  Thanks!

Michael Ma got a reaction from Twist in My Review of the Zhiyun Crane 3-Axis Gimbal
Just saw this video.  Seriously impressed how powerful the motors are.  I get the impression Zhiyun is really serious about making good gimbals and are willing to spend money doing the R&D some (not all) other companies out there that have put out products, but I feel they are untested for real world long term use and are unwilling to make any improvements or fix any issues that the customers are having, and they are too busy making 10 other gimbal models that are not thoroughly tested for professional reliability. I guess it's just early adopter issues.  Anyway, looking forward to more reviews on the Z1 Crane

It's like you invite someone over to a prescreening of a movie that hasn't been audio mastered, and instead of telling you that there were issues with audio and hearing what you have to say about it, they publish an article to the world saying the movie is unwatchable.  Then they make assumptions and state that the audio issues probably can't be fixed.  Should anyone ever let this guy prescreen movies ever?

Michael Ma got a reaction from Kisaha in Gimbal for Gear 360 (Samsung VR Camera)
I always wondered what the results would be if someone bothered to put a light 360 camera on a camera's hot shoe that was stabilized on a gimbal.  This is the rig I wish I had on my honeymoon, unfortunately we didn't have these options a year ago.  Now that I've got around to it, I would like to share the results.
    Gear:
    Gear 360
Canon 80D (I recommend a taller camera over a mirrorless.  Also, lighter camera won't always work out in your favor if the rig is top heavy which makes the 360 camera prone.)
Zhiyun Crane (I tried something very similar with my Pilotfly H1+ GH3, and a GoPro Hero 3, and it was too shaky as the motors was not strong enough).  The Zhiyun Crane with the 10-18 STM lens had no problem with the Gear 360 on top.
Note: The edelkrone TILTHEAD is only there as rudimentary stand and more importantly a counterweight to balance a top heavy rig.  Somehow adding a lot more weight to the bottom makes it much easier to hold for longer periods.

Results: It stabilizes very nicely.  In fact, when the 360 camera itself is placed on a table that is not perfectly level, the stitching doesn't seem to align that well, but when on a gimbal, it's always holding that perfect longitudinal (roll axis) level, even during movement.  If you can get a taller coldshoe mount  than the one I'm using (without making it too top heavy), that would be much better.  As high as it is, the gimbal is very apparent in the shots if you look slightly down.
Premiere Pro has tools to work with 360 videos now and lets you pull normal looking 2D shots in the NLE.  And even though the the quality is much better than I expected from the YouTube videos online, the video quality still has a long way to go.  The 2D frames offer less quality than a HD (720p) camera would provide.  Still useful for something like a vlog.  Currently, 2 cameras are being recorded and stretched on a 4K file.  I think we need to have at least 8K (maybe more) to match the 2D image quality from a GoPro.
Other notes.  As you might have imagined, having a big ball on top of your camera will limit the movement of your gimbal slightly.  You cannot extend your camera outwards with the camera facing out as the Gear 360 would make contact with the roll axis motor.  Also, keep in mind, unless you are willing to hold this above your head, your face is always in the shot, which may be undesirable.

Michael Ma reacted to Andrew Reid in Dynamic range vs everything else
Dynamic range is more than just counting the number of grey shades at the end of a chart.
It's how colour is handled, the roll off, the codec, noise, a lot of stuff.
C5D say nothing about what is usable, what isn't.
My Leica M9 came out 7 years ago and it has more usable dynamic range in the raw stills than the latest full frame sensor from Sony in the A7S II (which remember, Sony claimed had 15 stops!! Yeah right)

Michael Ma reacted to Cinegain in Panasonic Leica 25mm f/1.4 or Olympus M.Zuiko 25mm f/1.2 Pro for the GH4?
Olympus PRO has a more clinical look, the Leicas are more about smooth character. You could say one is a surgeon saving people's lives and the other an actor like George Clooney. Not to say that you can't have a smooth doctor or an actor without much of an attitude. Think it's also about what you shoot with it, maybe the Oly is more for landscape and Panaleica more suited for people. Again. Not to say one cannot mean the other, just the natural tendencies I think each has.
