I'm sorry but I totally disagree. I own both lenses and I have to say the Sony G 18-105 PZ f4 is way better than the Canon 18-135:
    - metal construction vs. fiddly plastic (and the Sony feels much better overall)
    - constant f4 vs. variable which starts right after the 18mm, making it impossible to use as a zoom.
    - parfocal vs non-parfocal
    - internal non-protruding zoom vs. protruding: also, the Canon has so little dampening that it extends itself when shooting downwards at a steep angle.
    - super silent zoom and focus motors vs. noisy one: the Canon doesn't have a zoom motor and it is considerably noisy if you choose to autofocus on both the C100 and C300.
    - annoying focus-by-wire vs. conventional focusing: this would be the only "but" on the Sony lens (why, Sony, why??), but at least both the zoom and focus rings have a very nice feel and are large enough for manual use. The Canon 18-135 focus ring is rubbish: tiny, wobbly and with a minimal focus throw which make it pretty unusable.
    - 550$ vs. 500$: money is not the issue here...
Keep in mind the Sony G series tried to be equivalent to the Canon L series. I think Canon L lenses are in another league in terms of handling and build quality, but this Sony G lens is still many steps above the cheapo Canon EF-S kit lenses...

IronFilm reacted to hoodlum in Canon to release a mirorless camera very soon
Canon clearly mentioned that 4k is not coming any time soon due to "Cost" issues.
MM: Well, historically, I think that Canon was the first in the world to come out with a 4K product. In 2011, we had the Canon EOS 1D C, and then we had the Canon Cinema EOS C500 for professional use. For the consumer models, I think that we still need to work a little bit more on the balance between the cost and the sensor sensitivity before we can come out in the market. As you may know, Canon's main point of difficulty is to reduce costs.
[Ed. note: This is interesting, in that Canon views cost competitiveness as their main point of challenge in the market. It's also interesting in that it sounds like we won't see much in the way of 4K video in their SLR lineup for a little while yet.]

Hey - I'm no Blackmagic lover, but even I can see that if you expose your shots properly both cameras are entirely usable. All cameras have their flaws, and let's be real - the Epic is (or was) $30k just for the brain versus the URSA which is what - $6k? (can't keep up with BM's pricing these days) So you'd hope there's going to be a difference.
All I'm saying is - despite the fact that REDs have been used on countless high end productions over the past 8 years, it's not like the REDs are flawless. RED have suffered immensely from corrupt files, camera crashes, high amounts of noise (especially early releases of Dragon), and overall unreliability - not to mention overheating and the noisy fan, boot up times on the RED One, buggy firmware releases etc. etc.
I once ACd on a RED that had to be re-booted about every 3 hours because it would just shit itself. Then there's the REDs that wouldn't boot up unless you plugged the VF Lemo cable in, pressed the red button, pulled it out, pressed the red button again, and then plugged it back in...
You can get great images out of a RED, and many of its bugs have been ironed out over firmware and hardware upgrades... But to suggest that it hasn't had its problems is disingenuous - especially when they've been out in the wild for about 8 years... unlike BM

We're about to see a lot shitty red footage, then.... (not that reduser isn't already full of it).
The GH4/C100/A7S etc. are already capable enough in good hands and much easier to use and light for and operate. They are SHOCKINGLY close to the high end until you really push things far beyond what anyone here is shooting, anyway. Red is nice on the high end, but what they do well doesn't benefit those without the money (in post and in lighting and camera support) to make it workable. The camera is not very workable for a single operator, is a light hog, tricky in post to get the most of, etc.
And even the Alexa is affordable as a rental. Ever noticed that the most expensive cameras have the best looking footage? It's not because of the camera, it's often because of the cost preventing incompetent people from getting their hands on it. To a point. Lots of rich incompetent people, too, though they also have money to hire decent crew.
    Nice car, though.

    Nothing about that looks cheap/budget.
Can't see a shooting package coming in any less than $10k (probably about the same as Ursa Mini, when totalled up).
RED usually start the hype machine when they know something is about to drop from a competitor. Either they over estimated what the FS5 would be, or something is brewing elsewhere (or maybe they know the 4.6K mini/C300 mk II footage is gonna blow everyone away).

    Scarlet? What Scarlet?
3K for 3K aside, now converted as 4K4all (the only point is that's a bit late actually...) Scarlet doesn't exist. There is Mini-Epic or, better put, RED. Once Epic Dragon, whatever is, will be converted soon in Weapon. That's the actual truth.
BTW, RED One was a prototype. Sold to thousands of developers or beta testers who rather than to be paid for, paid the R&D. A couple of big names (v.g. Peter Jackson, Steven Soderbergh) as forfait of their own name and reputation, but probono. The deal comprehended to inscribe their lettering in the history of 4K acquisition.
People always forget RED is more than a camera company, they are simply the best dream sellers the industry has ever met. With a little bit but significant difference, they sell real IQ + QC based on supply and demand.
PS: Last but not least, ...with success as usual.

If they do, it would be so dumb of them.
Boxster aside, Porsche would be so dumb to release a car for "everyone."
It would dilute their brand as a desirable high end car.
It would put the car in the hands of people who don't care enough to drive it well, and they'd burn out their transmissions.
Red dodged a bullet by giving up on the 3k/$3,000 camera. No one takes the Scarlet seriously except as an owner/op camera... I can see them lower the price and capability of the scarlet, making it more of a true C100 competitor, but man. If Red does this... DUMB.

Yep. Even if they make camera somewhat affordable you're gonna have to add so much expensive RED gear to get it up and running that it'll end up being three times or more the cost of an Ursa Mini. But maybe they'll shock us. I doubt it.

IronFilm reacted to Ed_David in the Phil Bloom color grading look and learning to relove the sony fs7
I think based on Phil's FS7 slow motion video I have an idea of what he does to grade which I always liked.

I recolored my slo mo fs7 video with same style:

Basically I think he applies even to sony cameras in filmconvert an arri alexa lut - probably fuji eternal and or kodak 5219 - and raises the shadows up - milky shadows. From here he just affects the offset and plays with sharpness over the final image.  The alexa lut in filmconvert gives really nice greens and blues as a starting point.
I did that plus went to a kodak release print by going after filmconvert to rec 709 generic impulz luts to a cineon then off to a film print.
But not every video is the same technique at all and not one lut works well for each video - each is different depending on scene - color balance - etc - but I like the rich look he got out of the fs7 and it made me reevalutate the camera.  I am now pro the fs7 again and think the fs1 will be a pretty amazing camera.  I am still completely mesmorized by color - by how it all works - to get good skin tones but also to create looks that feel unique and interesting.  It's a very patient and experimental artform.
I no longer think we should all be trapped to c300 for skin tones - great skin tones and feel can come from s log 3.

OH EM GEE!!! That is making the PL/B4 camera be a killer studio camera! Unfortunately not something which would interest most of us here.
Makes it anamazing doco camera too (if only it had ND filters built in....).
I wonder if the PL mount could be swapped for a Nikon F mount, just like it can be swapped now for a B4 Mount?? If so, it could make the PL version be the perfect option for me!!
Pity about them dropping GPS functionality. But understandable

According to the statistics on my channel a huge majority watch on their computer.
Cellphones are rising and tablets are dropping.
The big point of 4k for youtube IMO is the higher bitrate and lower compression that makes the HD look better. My tests showed that HD upscaled also looked better due to the higher bitrate.
It even happens to be that people can't tell 4K and HD upscaled apart on youtube.
