For many that have moved away from Sony, they'd need to improve the following:
    * Figure out the overheating issue
    * Improve their color science
    * Move to an IBIS that really works and is demonstrably superior to just an OIS lens alone
    * Implement 4K60p...again, without overheating
    * A flip out VF would be nice, thank you.
I'd be surprised to see if they really come up with something competitive to the GH5, but I'd certainly like to see that happen. It just seems to me that Sony is so set in their ways, they rarely deviate from the path.
I've used Sony cameras for years, so I'd like to see them give Panasonic a run for their money. The more competition the better.

What about the large portion of video shooters that never use AF? Seems like more of a hobbyist hangup than something that'd hold back a working pro.

Good read. Maybe there is not enough room, in this particular room, for all these elephants, but there are other smaller rooms in this house, and Panasonic seems to inhabit quite nice the video room for quite some time now.
Just have a couple of mirrorless models, and concentrate more on video.
Everything of the GH5 on a C100 body, for 5500$ (give or take 500$!), with more room for heat dissipation and bigger batteries, and you have an instant hit.
They used to have the 100, and have the DVX200, and JVC has the LS300, just combine everything and do a good video camera.
If they do not fit in the video room (Canon/Sony, Fuji seems to care more now, BlackMAgic), then they won't fit anywhere soon!

I guess well-informed indie filmmakers would know that Panasonic makes some of the best low budget indie filmmaking cameras for the buck. And that one of Panasonic's worst problems stems around bad sales, due to poor marketing and terrible after sales (not in all countries, but in many). Add to this, the fact that they haven't Specifically targeted capturing India and China for their enormous potential and one can pretty much understand the state of affairs of their camera division. Which quite honestly, is bad for the low budget Indie Filmmaking Community as a whole.
Now it appears Panasonic is restructuring it's camera division and retrenching people from the camera division and absorbing whoecer is left, elsewhere.
("Three other businesses units -- digital cameras, private branch exchange telephone systems and optical disk drives -- will be dismantled. Each will be scaled back and placed under the umbrella of other operations, with headcount to be reduced.")
IMHO this is just bad timing, considering that people were predicting that the GH5 would break the 60,000 units camera annual sales record of the GH4 at its peak.
While this doesn't mean that Panasonic would be shutting down its Camera Division, it just is very bad timing, especially considering that the GH5 is around any moment (early units have already been shipped and users are very happy with them), and buying nay lose confidence.
I think Panasonic needs to Clarify and Pacify customers who have bought into the system and many others who are hoping to pick up some great low budget indie filmmaking gear. Also they need to get SERIOUS with their marketing regarding the audience for their cameras.

Sure, if you're not excited about:
    *4K60p
    *4K slo mo
    *IBIS
    *Improved color science
    *Obviously improved AF
    *Internal 10bit 4:2:2
*Improved low light that some say are in the range of an A6300
*Higher rez sensor for better stills
Then yeah, not much to get excited about.   (I'm sure I've left off some other things)

You cannot claim a camera that shoots clean ISO 3200 at F0.7 is 'not that great in low light'

F1.2 on the Speed Booster XL = F0.768
Sensor dynamic range in the RAW files is around 13 stops, so same as the 1D X Mark II full frame 20MP sensor.
So not sure why you think DR is less due to the sensor size.
It's only a bridge too far if it kills low light and dynamic range. It hasn't.
    Yes it does.
    300mm F2.8 hardly a must-have lens for filmmaking.
Bird watching and plane spotting maybe.
The GH5 actually excels at telephoto because you can easily attain the equivalent of 800mm on full frame.
    800mm!
(with the relatively small Panasonic-Leica 100-400mm)
I do miss the old body size and ergonomics haven't exactly progressed much but it's still a small camera and the extra features have to go somewhere.
You're welcome to have your opinion but there's not much of a factual basis for it.

After a weekend playing with the GH5 and 2 years of the GH4 I am happy with my purchase. Did the improvements warrant the hefty cost and the upgrade in general? probably not for me, as I am just an enthusiast who loves filming family occassions and taking his camera around with him whereever he goes. I am sure all the fancy stuff under the hood would be more noticeable to those using the gh5 to its limits for paid work. I was looking mainly for stabilisation as most of my work is handheld, and this camera delivers on this in leaps and bounds, especially noticeble with non OIS lenses.
I purchased vlog and after some initial trials I am back to using standard profiles. I shot some standard footage over the weekend and showed it to my wife and mother in law , 10 bit 4k 150mb in standard profile and the first thing they both said is "wow look how amazing that looks...it feels like you are there!" Now these guys are not pixel peepers, and they watch my footage all the time and are used to high quality hd footage, but this change from the gh4 to gh5 was instantly noticeable to them, the humble viewer who normally wouldnt care if something was shot on an iphone or not!
Low light seems to be better as well, and with a bit of netvideo you can get really clean footage....
All in all if I hadnt have managed to sell my GH4 for £1000 I would not have been able to consider and\or afford the GH5. As it was though, it was a £700 purchase for me, I already had lenses so as it stands I am very happy!

Same here, and I'm pretty much a Panasonic fanboy. I'll wait to see if Sony does anything at NAB, or whatever the next photo tradeshow after that is. And I'd like to see how the 400mbps firmware looks, as 150mbps is a little light for the high-motion stuff I shoot.
Ahhh, who am I kidding? If I wasn't broke I'd probably have it already

    Not this shit again.
It's only a quarter size sensor if super 35 is a half size sensor and super 16 is a 1/8 size sensor.
Low light on this thing is actually pretty good - it's not the A7S but it's comparable to the A6300, A6500. Maybe a stop under, becoming noticeable as you get to the upper end of the ISO range.

Only in terms of depth of field, but if you see the sensor size as a potential advantage that allows you deeper DOF for the same level of light transmission, then that can be an advantage. There's also a (admittedly very expensive) 7-14 2.8 lens from an Olympus, and a 7.5mm F2 manual focus almost-pancake from Laowa launches shortly. If you want to work with Speed Boosters a ' FF 18mm F1.8' is attainable with a 14mm 2.8 and a Speed Booster XL. But how often do you shoot at Ultra wide? There are a bunch of fast options for M43 from the 20mm on full frame and upward.
I guess it just depends on what you're using it for. You have a point that the auto focus is weak vs the competition, and also about the body getting a bit big for micro 4/3.  I think that's preferable to a too small body that overheats. I'm guessing that the IBIS, 10 bit, high frame rates, etc necessitated a size increase from the GH4, along with the professional features they've added (HDMI and dual SD slots).
If you're all about low light, a Canon cinema EOS or Sony A7s makes much more sense.

Hey ass hole, I'm just speculating for fun and never said millions. I have no clue how many guides/LUT packs he actually sells, just generally estimating based on my own experience. For a decently optimized website (yes, his is not), 1.0-1.5% conversion is pretty good. Frankly, I highly doubt EOSHD gets 1.7MM unique visitors per year based on organic traffic estimates, he might need start filtering out Russian analytics spammers.
If PayPal chargebacks are a significant problem for him then his content isn't good enough. Yeah it'll always be an issue to some degree but straightup piracy is a far bigger concern for something like this.

Personally I'd advise you to get a Nikon for natural colors. More natural than Canon in fact, they exaggerate the warmth a slight bit. Other than that, for something like family movies I'd probably go with the GX80/85 with stabilisation. Gives life to the shots if you shoot family handheld, and the stabilisation really helps.

Just get your facts straight and you will be fine.
    - 5D3/D750 aren't 4K cameras, so no 4K monitor can help you there
    - The monitors we are talking about are NOT real 4K monitors, is this comprehendible enough for you?
    - Full frame focus with 1.4f lenses is almost impossible to focus right for more than 1 second - or less, even if you had a 65" TV worn on your  head, it isn't about the monitor/screen/focus peaking, it is about physics. That is another huge conversation, about the 5Dii revolution, and the effects on moving image mentality and psychology, not for this topic.
That's what I said, that's what you seemed missing completely, people with less knowledge are reading these forums, and they will try to find 4K monitors to use with their D750, or else they won't be able to pull focus with out a focus puller on 1.4f lenses, filming a soccer game.
I did not call you anything, I just disagreed with your generalities and offered facts to your myths, while it is truth, people didn't use 4K monitors until a year ago, and still just a wee tiny portion of video makers have a true 4K monitor (something like a 0.4%) to help them with focus, do you disagree with that?

all these generalizations "we need 25600 ISO to shoot/only AF/only 4K 60frames 10bit is acceptable", and whatnot make me wonder, if I am too old for video, or people have just a six months memory.
Like a couple of years ago, all humanity was focusing on 4K 7" monitors that costed 150$..just gimme a break.

They fucked up because Canon fails to understand that entry to medium range ($1000-$3000) camera with good video capabilities would generate some substantial sales and there is definitely a market segment here (eg GH4).  Even if this "video DSLR" market segment represents 3-5%; Is the Camera industry doing so well that they can ignore it ?
They fucked up because now this market segment is being taken by Panasonic and Sony and people who make the switch are not going to come back.
They fucked up because some conservative executives in Japan think that delivering decent video feature in DSLR/Miroless body would hurt their pro-cinema line when actually the pro do need a real pro camera with built in ND, XLR and all the pro cam features.
They fucked up to comprehend that the amateurs or video enthusiasts like me can't spend the money they don't have for an expensive Pro camera and even if I had the money I need something small capable of doing video and stills (plus having a nice full frame sensor and not S35). It has nothing to do with cannibalization, Sony does have A7 and FS line and they do just fine because they know it's two different market.
Bottom line is that I laugh at the 5D4, I pre-order the GH5 and I'm not spending a dime anymore on Canon gears. I may not be the typical core market guy for Canon but is the camera industry doing so well than they can ignore the 3-5% video/stills folks and laugh at the face of customers who invested a lot $$$ over the years ?

Yeah I have to give it to Panasonic with the GH- series, they have really pushed the body space to the max with what you need and nothing else. Their touchscreen, AF system, battery size, articulating LCD you name it has been in response to the customer, not some silly bastard that has never used a camera sitting behind a desk.
I just bought a new, yes new, still in the original box Panasonic AG-AF100AP video camera. It is laid out beautifully. It has, in a few test I have done, a hell of a Cine, Film look to it for the money you can buy one that is crazy to pass up. If I can't make a decent looking video with this camera I need to give it up.
Is it a Arri, well hell no LoL. but I will give Panasonic credit, they have all along, tried to help out the little guy more than any company along with BlackMagic trying also that I know of video wise.. We need to give them credit for that.
