If you're just looking for a super cheap overlooked option which still gives you aolid 1080 then simply get a secondhand Panasonic GH1 for US $150 or less. Will crush your existing Canon too ;-)

For a first camera of 5Dmk3 vs D5300 it is not even a contest!!! Of course get a Nikon D5300, and put all that saved money towards a few Nikon lenses. However there are a few others worth considering as well, such as the Panasonic G7.

it is a trivial thing to work around in 90% of usual cases for me. Usually when this is brought up it is just a red herring flung about by people (often Canon fanboys).

Ebrahim! You're almost making me change my mind again about not getting the D7000 right now... hmmm... must resist temptation! For now ;-) nah it isn't the huge deal people make it out to be. Pretty simple to do and quickly becomes automatic muscle memory. But I certainly agree it would be a wonderful "nice to have" if only Nikon would do this. But I strongly doubt they'll go to the extra cost (it requires an extra part built into the body) in a low end camera body just to serve a small niche of their customer base. I'd have hoped however it would be in their headline 4K cameras! Such as the D500. Wait and see, maybe it is!

Hilariously I saw yesterday released on YouTube the trailer for a local indie film. And boldly in the title it proclaims "4K UHD"!! Butttttt..... I know for a fact they shot the whole thing on a C100 mk1! Ha.

Refurbished is a good way to catch a bargain! Sell the kit lens and it is even cheaper.

Great pity the Sony F65 was never more successful. It was a screw up by Sony that they didn't focus on making the whole workflow for the F65 more smooth and efficient for Hollywood back when they first released the F65. They're fixing it now, but is too little too late. Arri (and even RED) has stolen the jump over Sony in this niche.

I expect the BIG changes with the low end cameras since that test is not just the image quality getting closer, but that they'll be able to light it faster and need to do less in post as well. Still won't be quite up to the speed and efficiency of an Arri Alexa of course, which is why the big guys will stick with that! But it is getting closer.

I'd avoid the ZE lenses in preference for the ZF instead, waaaay easier to adapt.

Heh, I've got a photographer mate who says the exact opposite and says the leap from D7000 to D7100 is only very small! & I know him to be a bit of a nerd, pixel peeper even (relative to me that is).

Mortgage the house and you can get 16 bit raw photos ;-)

For your needs I'd very strongly recommend ignoring the D500 as you do not fit into any of these categories: a) wildlife / photo journalist / sports photographer b) rich amateur who must have THE BEST NOW c) MUST HAVE NIKON 4K *NOW* filmmaker (patience.... it is just Nikon's first go at 4K. I trust/hope they'll bring out 4K to cheaper models soon. Hopefully without the additional crop over FHD!!) d) a very successfully working pro photography (they're rarer than you think...) who wants a pro body DX camera and who the extra cost of a D500 over D7200/D7100/D7000 is so small and inconsequential when spread over all their jobs. And who might even just be getting it as their back up / B body. Your big choices are instead between these three categories of options: A) D5x00 series camera, this is by far the most cost effective option and from reading your replies seems like the best option for you. B) D7100/D7200 good if you want to take your professional photography further and get a semi pro body. And it will allow you to AF with AF-D series Nikkors (this is the biggest reason why to get one in my books) C) a D750 for all the reasons I just said in B) plus you get the small (debatable, some will claim the benefit is greater) gain of moving up to the larger FX sensor. But at a much much greater, not just for the body but also greater cost for the lenses too. (And is why I wouldn't recommend option C for you, even though still now in 2016 the D750 is *the* best general purpose DSLR you can buy anywhere) My view is get yourself a D5x00 series camera (or maaaybe a D7100/D7200). Then a year or two down the track pick uo the amazing 4K shooting (probably? Maybe??) D5600/D7300 or instead a D750 on the ultra cheap. Then your purchase now will become your B cam body later on. As every pro shooter should have at least two cameras (and especially if you shoot events in the future, then it can become ESSENTIAL to use two or more bodies). Nope, sorry to be so very blunt but that is 100% crazy talk. Don't think Nikon has *EVER* made a DSLR which can't use a flash on its hotshoe, the mere thought of it is rediculous lol :-)

I just had to log in on my phone to correct the absolute crazy talk I'm reading about not getting a D5500 because it won't use an external flash!!!!! wtf Of course it can use a flash! lol If it would work on a D5200 / D5300, you can expect it to work on a D5500. Oh, and the D5500 is the same sensor used in all D5x00 bodies from D5200 onwards. They do tweak and refine the design, and even sometimes switch manufacturing suppliers, and in that sense it is "new". So you can expect sometimes some minor improvements from one model to the next (sometimes these are more notable than other times, such as fixing banding issues after the D5200), but broadly speaking you can expect the "same" general performance in all of them. The "same" sensor is also in the D7100/D7200 as in those newer D5x00 series cameras. Ditto in the D3300 as well.

Well..... it used to say "in July". Thus, I would not hold your breath over that January! I shall keep on expecting it to ship *LATER* than they say it will, until they actually end up shipping it.

Saw today the refurbished D7000 go for a crazy low price of US$349, very very tempted to get one myself!! But I think I'll keep on rocking along with the D90 for stills. And resist the temptation to upgrade for at least another 6 months. Obviously not so great for video, but if you're a Nikon stills shooter that is one hell of a deal!

Radical thought: I hope BMD is saving all the reject 4.6K sensors (which I believe are just ever so slightly too large for the m4/3 mount??) to instead deliver a cut down 4K version of the 4.6K sensor in a new URSA Mini 4K (with 4.6K DR & ISO) MFT! :-D

looks like they will be having a much much wider "beta" testing than usual with their trickle out shipping I would agree hardware is in its final form. They just want to nail down firmware before opening up to the masses and the reviews of it hit the web. clearly they are riding a lot on this with high hopes a want to get it just right and perfect before it goes into wide release
