So that leaves me with either the E-M5ii, the a6500 or the A7ii. Since this is supposed to be a casual camera, I don't see the point in spending close to $1500 for one of the Sony's

I hear you. Yesterday I was checking out the A7s II for the Xth time again, but I dont think I could justify the money. For me it will be short term a G85, because I need that mic-in by end of september. Longer-term (e.g. Q1/2018) I will either get the E-M1 mkII or GH5 (if there is no G85 sucessor with 4k60p until then). I am tempted by the even better IBIS of the oly as well as by the fact that it has the same size as a G85! I yet have to find some convincing stuff shot with the oly though...

    Olympus 17/1.8 and 45/1.8.

This is all I ever need on a m4/3 system. So great and so sharp. Affordable to.

The 17 is great and has something I (and others) call mojo, but I dont regret trading it for the Pana 15 for a fraction of a second.

Why don´t you do a quick test in the basement? Shouldnt take more than 15mins. I don´t mean to be a smartass, but that would give

you 1st hand info, as lowlight with a 3.5 lens might deserve a special test due to the various variables it accounts to.

Thanks Panny, for sure I will make those tests, but the Fisheye has yet to arrive. Would have loved to get the Laowa instead, but this is just a single project and I wanted to keep the costs down. But you know what? As soon as it is here, I will make that test and share the results with you guys, so we all benefit.

If you plan to de-noise in post production, 4k would definitively be advantageous.

    Perfect, ty!

I just started following him a couple weeks ago. He has some great 5D3 footage and this one looks great as well. He really captures a late 70s/early 80s NYC film look with his videos. I love the slow dolly in he does in that video.

I finished watching all of his videos and followed him immediately. what a nice vibe. would love to achieve such a thing.

It's not the 10mm, but this is the video that convinced me to go the SLR Magic route when I first got into micro four thirds. Far and away one of the most cinematic videos I've ever seen on the GH4.

good lord, this is ... epic.

It seems the G85 makes the most economical sense, but if that isn't necessarily an issue, have you considered the Olympus E-M1 Mark ii? The price is starting to drop on them and they seem to have better IBIS than Panasonic's variant. It does Cinema 4K at a higher bitrate than any of the current Panasonic's as well. You can use your current lenses and I feel Olympus has a better out the box color science than Panasonic. It also has a high bitrate, all-i 1080p if that is appealing to you. If you don't need the 4K, the em5 Mark ii is a nice choice as well.

However I will add that although the a6500 does have its issues, the 4K really is pretty remarkable... but I understand why you wouldn't want one... the same reasons I returned mine.

The oly is an interesting idea, because in essence the size of the body is the same as the G85, which suprised me. Honestly, I dont think I need an even better IBIS than the Panasonic one for my purpose, so I am not really seeing the additional benefit of the Olympus to justify the higher price. Maybe I need to re-read Andrews review.

What does this mean: "I am not willing to switch to sth like the A6500 because I went the Sony route twice only to return back to Panasonic." What exactly were you dissatisfied with? The A6500 actually puts out different colors than all previous models. It is compact, mic in, IBIS - has what you need and the best resolution 4K (you can really see the difference).

Well, take the dimmed screen when recording 4k for example. 90% of my footage is outdoor and I dont want deal with barely readable screens nor with overheating issues nor with not having AF-S in video mode etc pp.. Three times I was nearly pulling the trigger on the A6500 before I got doubts on second thought.

There is a third option if all you want to have is your GX80 to have a mic input for a small shotgun mic and that's to get a Tascam DR10SG integrated shotgun mic and recorder.

If you want to use other sources like lav mics then its obviously not going to do the job for you (although they do a version that is exactly that as well) but if you are just looking to get a G85 or Ninja Star to record a small Rode shotgun with or some such then this is a much cheaper solution (about £130). As it automatically records two streams at different levels, it will also be a bit easier to use if you are running about solo grabbing shots on the GX80. Quality wise its much of a muchness with the cheaper Rode ones IMO.

It can be used without the additional mount arm if you want to keep it lower profile by the way.

Looks nice, but as Anaconda stated:

The problem I have with recording using that Tascam thing, or a Zoom or anything else like it. You have to press record twice. Chances are, you'll (or at least I would) just leave the audio running, which could be a hassle to sync.

this. I already have a superb external recorder (Sony PCM-M10) which i rarely use, because I am a one man show...

I think that going down the G85 route might be my best bet.

  8. Ok guys, I need you guys to help me with a decision:

I am desperately in need for a Mic-in. I am not willing to switch to sth like the A6500 because I went the Sony route twice only to return back to Panasonic (although the form factor is appealing...). I am also not in the market for the GH5.

    Leaves me at two options:

    1. Go for the G85 as an addition to my GX80 (I wont sell it, because size does matter to me).

    2. Go for the Atomos Ninja Star to combine with my GX80.

Advantages for 1: still being able to record in 4k, no clumsyness, no HDMI cable, weather-sealing.

Advantages for 2: ProRes recording could yield better quality, I dont need to own a second cam and can totally decide whether it is worth it to bring the Ninja Star for a certain job or not, (might be a) cheaper solution,

Although I love 4k, when watching it in comparison with 1080p on a 65" TV, I didnt see a mind-blowing difference (of course this differs for everyone!) - so 4k isnt a must for me, for now. Also, as long as the ETC mode with 4k wont trickle down to something like G85 mk.II, I would prefer to wait. On the other hand, a used G85 can now be had with some luck for 500 euro in Germany. An Atomos can be had for arround 270 + CFast.. mh, tough decision.

My real concern with the Ninja star is that my GX80 will look like a spaghetti monster, when the star is attached next to an external mic with HDMI + Mic cable :(

    Any thoughts?

  9. Could be APS-C mode, but I doubt that. I honestly dont think that it is too wide. I mean the whole video is shot from a first person perspective with the subjects direct in front of it. I could really imagine the video being shot in fullframe mode.

    Since there's a 1.1X crop in UHD on the GX85, you'd need a 9.5mm lens.

Seems one reason more for me to get the PL 8-18mm :grimace:

  11. 1 hour ago, jonpais said:

Is that mounted on an APS-C camera? If so, it's essentially the same FOV and DOF as your 15mm, isn't it?

Exactly my thought, so I asked them again and they shot it on an A7S II - e.g. i would need a 10,5mm to get this look on my Pana.

Guys, I need your advice for yet another "guess the focal length" session:

For sure the first 30sec are GoPro or equiv. But after that...? I really like this immersive feeling and would like to adopt such a thing.

I managed to contact the people who did this video and they were kindly enough to tell me they used a Zeiss Loxia 21mm 2.8 - in case anyone is interested, too :)

I would wager that it's a 50mm. Doesn't look wide enough to be 35mm, doubt they would handhold/rig anything over 50mm. Could be a 40mm pancake also...?

Really? I would doubt that. take this shot for example:

    59635320c6b5a_Bildschirmfoto2017-07-10um12_09_54.thumb.png.212f867ba78e49a8c300c827c357e5d8.png

I tried to to that with my GX80 and the Pana 15mm and put the camera close to my chest and I did not get a similar FOV. My guess is that this is more sth like a 24mm (FF equiv), but I am not sure...

Could you talk me through this behaviour with the AF-ON button Jase and whether you know if it is the same on the 45 1.8?

I have the 45 1.8 and when I'm testing it with my hardware controller in MF mode I can focus manually by wire with the joystick and activate an instant AF by pushing the stick in and I can also activate a joystick steerable mode where I can move the focus point around the screen and then press the stick in to activate an instant AF on that point.

I'm curious to know if this would solve the issue for you if it did the same with the 17 as I don't have one of those to test with?

It is true for all Oly lenses that have the MF declutch mode. The 45 1.8 doesnt have this mode, so the behaviour on this lens might be / is different.

Like i said, when you have such an oly lens with the focus ring pulled back, the AF-ON button is disabled (I set the AE/AF lock button to this mode). Once you push the focus ring back to normal mode, the AF-ON works as expected (even if you set your camera (not by using the lens!) to MF mode.

Anyone here familiar with the Olympus 17mm f/1.8? Kinda curious about it, since it has that 17mm focal length, MF clutch especially and compact size. Didn't really consider it before, but now we have sensor stabilization on the Panasonics, it might be quite dope. Aside from the build quality and the sub-f/1.8 light gathering capability, think it might be a cheapo Nokton 17.5mm for us that like the focal length and MF.

I shot this video using the oly 17:

The lens is really nice, but I like the Pana 15 way more. What is really a pitty about the Oly lenses is that once they are in MF mode, the AF-ON button is disabled. When not setting the lens to MF mode, the focus ring is not linear anymore - very annoying for focus pulls.

The pana 15 fixes that since the focus ring is linear and even better than the one of the oly, again even when it is in its MF mode. And since we have a 1.1x crop in 4k anyway (at least for the GX80), the pana 15 actually becomes a 17 :)
