To be honest, I do notice it, and you should, too. The images stutter. Not that I don't like your videos.

Would you mind pointing me to a specific sequence? I just want to see whether I will notice it once someone is putting my nose onto it.

  2. Thanks jon. I think I will try to do some tests on my own to see whether I can see the difference in my work.

On a sidenode: god, whenever I watch your videos I feel the urge to buy the Summilux 12mm at an instant. As soon as we get the successor of the G85 that will enable the Teleconverter option also in 4k, this will be it for me.

Jon didn’t mention the GH5 and neither did I in my reply to him. I was talking in general with my experience with Panasonic cameras. And as many others have stated before me they are getting better color when underexposing a little bit. Not better DR, not better noise performance but color. This is my experience as well but I have not done any extensive testing.

I am by no means experienced in the department of grading, but my last 3-4 videos or so i underexposed with -2/3 and I love the results I am getting. However I also have to conclude that my GX80 is sometimes overexposing, so turning it down by -2/3 makes the zebras go disappear in the highlights area.

Made up my mind on lenses

    lovely! Voigtländer are absolute lensporn...

Since I am very bad at guessing focal length and fstop, what do you guys think what was used here:

If someone want to have a look at v-log skin tones I also made these videos. The grade is a little bit different between the and I guess somewhere in the middle would be better, but I'm very pleased with how easy it is to get good skin tones in v-log. At least I'm satisfied with the result and it can only get better. Turn down the sound if you don't want to listen to a strange Nordic language :)

Nice skintones indeed! Compared to your videos taken with the GX80 in the same yoga studio setting, I dont see that much more dynamic range. How is your experience to date with the GH5 compared to GX80 / G85? What do GX80 owners like I miss? :)

Years ago there was a review by a still photographer with the GF1 shooting stills on the 20mm f1.7 Panny...its worth finding online...his shots are stunning and I think that like Peru, you will find Nepal a place of such beauty and production value as a filmmaker...exciting times ahead for you!

    This one: https://craigmod.com/journal/gf1-fieldtest/ ?

If yes: it is indeed a great read and stunning images!

If the 8-18 looks anything like the 12-60 you will not be disappointed...no mistaking that it's made by Leica both image and build quality wise...how light it is for a metal lens (at least on the 12-60) will surprise...not sure whether that's possible in such a wide zoom...but the idea of a zoom of this optical quality at 8mm on the wide end for 1100 is enticing...as you already shoot M4/3 this is an amazing price...a company called Laowa makes a 7.5 f2.0 prime....not a bad looking lens, but still 500...for another 600 this lens gives you a nice range and in Leica glass!

    Edit: specs say 8-18 is 315 grams....the 12-60 is 320 grams

    P

Exactly my line of thinking. However I dont buy lenses new, so I will wait until the price drops a bit more and get it used. On the other hand the laowa lens is also quite interesting, since it is also small and lightweight. Will see.

Another possibility is to wait for the Leica 8-18mm, which Fritz is considering, and which has both weather sealing and a filter thread.

I have to admit that at first I was a bit disappointed that it has no constant f2.8 aperture. But now on a second sight, I think this could be really a lens for me - weather sealing, smaller and lighter than the olympus 7-14, leica touch (hopefully) and a filter thread. Bonus: longer end without sacrificing too much on the shorter end. If the manual focusing is the same as with other newer PL lenses like the 15 f1.7 then what is not to love about this lens?

A lot of people think its a Point-and-Shoot. So, it goes to a lot of places where ILCs aren't allowed. I have even shot it at places where one needs permissions (guerilla shooting), by using the Panasonic Lumix App. I am wondering whether the 20mm f/1.7 would be a nice addition (though I am very happy with the 25mm f/1.7, right now, along with the tiny almost pancake kind of zoom, the 12-32mm).

I doubt anything that even remotely resembles a DSLR would be allowed in most of these places.

Exactly! GX80 is very stealthy :) If only this G800(?) or whatever its name is had IBIS..

I'm still quite happy with my GX80 and I won't be selling it anytime soon. It's taking great photos and videos. I could mention some negatives, but the fact of the matter is that this camera is good enough. I couple it with the ZOOM H1 positioned close to the subject and I've found it an impressive match for many systems... still state of the art in 2017.

Agreed, no way i will ditch the GX80 any time soon, it delivers incredible quality in such a small package! There is no alternative once one combines ibis, size and picture quality. But maybe a G85 would be a nice addition to my collection :)

Very nice video @jase! I just bought a G85 as they were on sale for almost 40% here in Norway. Keep looking and maybe there will be similar deals in Germany. My first impressions is that ergonomics is much better than the GX85 (obviously). Compared to my GH5 it's very small and light, and even though Panasonic is releasing new models I very much doubt any of them will have 4K 60P if that's something you want. The GH5 is big for a reason. The size and weight difference to the GH4 and G85 is much more noticeable than in pictures.

Indeed, the 4k60p would be just a nice to have. In the past I always only used the 50p modes because I believed that i needed the slowmo. Now that I made the switch to 4k I found myself not having any real need for slowmo. I will keep an open eye for the G85!

Well it worked. Are you thinking of getting a new camera? I'm sure you could get more out of Raw than I do.

Well, I am lurking arround the 4k RAW topic all the time, but honestly, I dont think I would benefit from it that much. I got an insanely small package with the GX80, I like the endresults so why should I do a switch other than GAS? For 2017, I am interested in what Panasonic has in its sleeve for us during autumn/winter. For my next hike, I will need something more weatherproof, so either we have some successors or I might buy the G85 when it gets really cheap for its mic-In, weatherseeling and flipout screen. But time will tell.

Damn, that looks awesome!!! This may be my favorite of your videos Jase. Great shots + great edit + greay color + great music = cool as shit video!!! Are you still using Standard with everything dialed down and FilmConvert to color?

Thanks man, means a lot from a RAW guy ?

Standard with everything -5 except contrast, which i always brought back in post anyway. And yes, still filmconvert with the GH4 profile. With the Summilux those skintones you get OOTB, only needed to correct one single shot regarding skintones.

  14. A rather quick edit of a short sailing trip in The Hague:

Again I am really satisfied with the quality. The Summilux really sings. Stupidly enough I did not bring my field recorder so I had to rely on the built-in mic of the GX80, which I only could use in the beginning. The lack of a mic is is really annoying me, my next camera really needs to have have a mic in. I even considered checking out the A6500 but gave it up quickly after hearing about the dimmed screen issues.

I wasn't the hugest fan of the early Leica stuff. Basically they were Lumix-vibe lenses with sort of a faint Leica hint. But boy, the more recent Leica primes, they look the part, they perform the part. Though... they cost the part. Lol. The 15mm f/1.7 is actually really affordable and super practical, that's something I really like, but the 42.5mm f/1.2 and 12mm f/1.4, argh, bro! I just don't know. Also love the Olympus PRO stuff, but... they are a little bit more on the clinical side, like a Scarlett Johansson cyborg bot, sexy is hell, but if you want some humanization, raw emotion, passion and character... dang, Leica's always been good for that decade after decade!

After walking arround with the Summilux 15, I would buy the Summilux 12 in an instant as soon as we have something like the GX80/G85 mark II that allows the lossless ETC crop also in 4k. This, a mic-in and weathersealing for both lens and body seems like the almost perfect kit for hiking / backpacking / traveling whatsoever. The tools are nowadays incredible cheap for what they offer. Now imagine that Sony or Panasonic would integrate such a thing as the Techart Autofocus Adapter within their bodies... you might call that our heaven!

So you want vladsaysF to just buy a camera, put it on full auto and think he, as he admits in his post, knows basically nothing about video, and expect him to learn how to get pretty good at it, or even Great at it. Well maybe that IS all he wants. And then he should just go out and buy a GX80 and take OK, pretty good video and be happy. You are probably right, but I will be disappointed that he will be Just another P&S style video operator. Not the worse thing in the world, tons of people like that. But I don't think this forum is like that, and he should try for the best output, not just, ehh, a output.

Surely we are on here to get damn good at video, not just, well, average.

I could repeat my self and ask you again where anyone in this thread said he should go full auto. Again, I could repeat myself and ask you why the G85 is a P&S in your opinion and a GH4 is not, but you know what? This here:

If you don't have a clue well what can I say. I will say nothing. I know it will make you very happy. so that's it. I am done on here. This is turning into a DPR thread.

is really some sad stuff here. You come in here, start a rant, throwing arguments, then in fact you start to discredit people that dont do video the way you seem to think is the only way to do it and finally you finish by putting us on the DPR level where in fact you are the one rants about stuff no one said nor argued about. I dont see any sense in arguing with you about this, but I really want to express that this thingy here makes me quite sad and really dismantles this thread which is such an invaluable source of information for those particular cameras.
